I want to get the fastest data transfer speeds possible from my USB C connection cameras. Most of the USB connections leave a lot to be desired, (some don't always respond when there's a USB card put in) so I thought about Thunderbolt.
Are there specific types of thunderbolt PCI-e cards compatible with my Z790 Carbon board?

It's a hit or miss, though on Intel you're more likely to get one working.
Find one on a reputable retailer's site and read some reviews about it.

Update - I went to order from Athema - they appear to be the only UK outlet to do these cards, and today their website is down. I can't find anywhere else that still sells these cards. Some sites say that they're an end of line product. MSI don't seem to have a direct link to them. Looks like I've missed out.

As MSI thunderbolt cards appear to be an end of line product, and clearly not widely available, I’ll stick to the usb ports on the back. My external hard drive works intermittently on the z790 board, but other than eBay, they’re about the best I’m going to get.
