Any reason why my ti4200 is showing up as incompatible hardware in xp? Card was running fine until i did a reformat, now i cant upgrade to xp home. Tried standard vga drivers, 21.83, 23.11(said no nvidia chip detected!) 27.20 that came on the install disc, and 29.42 which I am using now on 98se. ?(

imaboutaquit,

The Ti4200 should work flawlessly. I would get the latest drivers from nVidia for Win XP or get the new 30.30 Drivers. There are links all over the forum to them.

The older drivers you listed are from prior to the GF4 so they did not detect Ti4200.

Good Luck,

Richard

the compatablity test will show that a geforce is incompatable..
b/c the 98 drivers will not work in xp

but xp has shitty drivers in it. so it will use tho's till you download newer one's but will work.

i would recomend a clean install. not a upgrade.

even if you only have XP home upgrade. you can do a clean install. it will just ask to varafy that you have a older windows CD l8r in the install...

but it will be a nice fesh install with none of the 98 problems draged with it.

What board are you using??

Now i have the same problem with my gigabyte based system.
non of my geforce agp cards ( gf2 400mx, gf2 ti 250, gf3 ti 200, gf4 ti 4200 ) are found compatible by windows xp.
Which is most stupid cos they all work perfect on win98se.
On my msi based system xp found them compatible.

strange isn't it ?

Just tried the 30.30 drivers. Installed and work on 98 fine. Tried upgrading to xp-screen still goes blank. shouldnt I just be able to install 98,install my drivers for my other hardware, install msi drivers and upgrade to xp?

When I boot my system, I am asked which Os I want to start-Windows or Windows XP setup. Boots into windows fine. If I choose XP setup, comes back with...Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt.<windows root> system 32hal.dll. Please reinstal a copy of the above file. ... Now ive searched for this file on my c:, on the win 98 cd and the xp cd. Cant find it anywhere. Do you know what this is? Obviously its a driver but for what? DX? Video driver? ;(

Well, i did try to set up a dual boot and couldnt get xp to run so I figured I did something wrong. So I used fdisk and deleted all partitions and started over with just one partition and win98se. All incorrect info should have been erased,no? My boot file looks nothing like that but that is EXACTLY the problem Im having. this is my boot .ini [Boot Loader]

thanks for the help, i may be getting somewhere. any more help is appreciated ;(

Hi,

You don't need to have the Win98 installed to do the XP upgrade. As long as you've got the Win98 CD-ROM, then the verification will go ahead as planned. Don't leave any trace of the Win98 on your hard drive before the XP install.

OK, I've heard of doing that(doing full install w/upgrade) but how do you get xp to run from a freshly formatted disc? I tried to do it just like the 98 install, get to the A prompt, run E:setup but I get a message that setup is not supported or something along that line-cant remember exactly. Maybe something about xp not using dos? If you could tell me how that would be great. And yes, I do have full version 98se.XP home is upgrade disc. Thanks ;(

On fresh formatted disk first make 2 or more partition.Than install win98se on D:.After that install XP,but when you are promt to upgrade say(click) no.Than you should get an option to install XP on C:/.This worked for me.And I dont have any problems.

hi

and change first boot to cd and boot for the xp install

with the disk in the drive not a floppy at all

swapped cards with radeon 7200 and can use xp no problem. Can anyone from msi give me an answer? If the card is compatible why cant I use it? Is there a way to work around this? I'm using xp home upgrade with clean install(thanks for the info), version 2002. I'm starting to get upset because i've spent alot of time and 160$ for a card I cant use. There must be an answer. It worked fine when xp was already installed with a previous version nvidia card(gf3ti200) but not on a new install.

 Well, im able to swap the 4200 in after installing xp with the radeon in the system. Not right but it works. My mother board is an Abit KT7E.
