I just tried to register with MSI France for a replacement of my P67A-GD65 bought in France from a French online retailer. The response from MSI France is that I have a board with a German serial number & I have to deal with MSI Germany. I don't speak German & even if I did I doubt if MSI Germany will help with a board purchaed in France. The retailer tells me to deal with MSI.

Anyone have any experience of escalating a customer service issue within MSI ? I should not be having an issue like this with a defective product !

The response from MSI France is that I have a board with a German serial number
The retailer tells me to deal with MSI.

If that board really has a serial number that points to the German sales channel, then it seems that the French Online retailer purchased the board from either a German Distributor or a German retailer. In that case, MSI France's refusal to deal with this mainboard is justified as they would be providing support for a mainboard that was never in their sales channel (they have never seen any money for it).  For Europe in general you would have to deal with your retailer in any regular RMA case and not with MSI France directly.  After all, this particular case is not that different.  If your retailer refuses to accept a justified RMA claim, he probably does not speak German either, if you know what I mean ...

It seems to me that it is your retailer you need to blame for the German serial number, unless your retailer can prove to you that he got the board from a French distributor.  That is what he would have to do when this matter should go to court.

Thanks, Jack, that all makes sense ... I just checked the retailers site and they are still selling the GD65 ... I guess they bought a bundle of them from Germany & got caught out ... (I presume that there are no fixed ones available yet?) I am right in thinking that retailers are not supposed to be selling these boards anymore ?

Looks like I got stiffed ... Retailer unresponsive to emails ...

Basically, the answer is yes.  Look here:

Products in the market

As of the 31st of January MSI informed all our distributors, retails and reseller to stop directly the sales of Intel 6 series based products of MSI and to hold any products pending shipments to customers.

Also important:

  1. Product swap

If you are confident and willing to wait we can swap your current Intel 6 series based product in a brand new MSI product which is based on the new B3 stepping of the Intel 6 series which solves the current SATA2 port issues. If you have an MSI 6 series mainboard you can ? for the short term - connect your storage devices to the safe white SATA3 ports on your mainboard, for more detailed instructions please click here.

This MSI product you get swapped will have similar or better specs. These new MSI products will become available in April and this way you will miss your product only for a very short period of time. You can identify the new products by a clear sticker on the color box. We will release details about this procedure before the end of February.

  2. Product return

If you are not confident about your current MSI based 6 series product MSI offers you the possibility to return the product to your point of purchase which will credit you. Please make sure to back-up your personal data.

In the light of the "product return" paragraph, you should be able to simply return the product to the retailer and get your money back.  As this procedure does not really require your serial number to be "valid" in the French MSI Support database, returning the product should be no problem for you as everything beyond that would be the problem of the retailer and must not concern your anymore.

If the retailer refuses to take the board back and return the money to you, then you could basically sue him for that.

----------------

As for MSI Germany (I am from Germany):  MSI Germany has currently not released any specific details about the way the product exchanges are going to be handled.  However, I am almost sure, that the exchange is going to be handled on the distributor or retailer level.  In that case, you would still be stuck with a "proof of purchase" pointing to a French retailer which is going to be complicated as well.

In any case, if you should decide to contact MSI Germany regarding this issue, you can contact me, if you want.  I can translate whatever you wish to say into German.

Jack

Jack, that's a kind offer & I'll take you up on it, thank you. I'm going to call the retailer tomorrow & see what, if anything they will do for me, if they won't help me (I suspect not, suing anyone in France is a long, complicated & expensive business & I guess that they know I'm not going to do it for 140 Euro ) Then perhaps when MSI Germany come up with a procedure for returning the boards you can help me with the process.

Should I inform MSI that this retailer is still selling broken hardware ? Seems unfair !

Many  thanks

Jeff

If I can, I will.

I am not sure if that is going to change anything, however, I believe it won't hurt to inform MSI France about it. You may not be the only one with that kind of problem.

Also isn't there some kind of Consumer Affairs/Unfair Commercial Practices in France that could assist you with some head knocking with that retailer?

Good idea - there may be - I need to check - I'm not actually French but English & consequently unfamiliar with the consumer laws here ...

Hi Jack, Do you know if MSI Germany are shipping replacement boards yet ? I have a ticket number from a replacement request I filed a month ago & have heard nothing from them.

best regards

Jeff
