Trying out my MSI 5870 Lightning

Customized 5870 design with 15-phase power supply system (13 phases for core and two for the mems).  This card is composed also of Solid State Capacitors, Hi-C caps, Solid State Chokes and special PCB design called LPL (Lightning Power Layer).  For the cooling part, you still have the Twin Frozr II cooler which is made up of two 8cm PWM Fans and 4x 8mm Superpipes.

Included accessories are HDMI cable, afterburner and driver cd, manuals, crossfire cable, dvi to vga adapter

So for my test system which I common use for benchies
Processor: i7 920 C0 (I wish I still have my old D0 with me)
Motherboard: MSI X58 PRO
Mems: Plain and simple Kingston 2x2GB DDR3 1333mhz
PSU: AcBel 900watts
OS and Driver: Windows 7 32bit and ATI Catalyst 10.2 with HotFix and MSI Afterburner 1.50 .
Note: No OS tweaks and mem tweaks at all

First test with All stock settings. Bottleneck!!!!

2nd Test ? 920 oc?ed at 4.2ghz to isolate the Bottleneck. Score went up right away

Last Test ? Oc?ed proc and oc?ed VC. As you can see I was able to hit 1015mhz only for the core with 1.35v. I guess the full potential of this card would be unleashed once you used a LN2 or Dry Ice cooling.

What about the new  BIOS , then ?  And  a better  manufacturing  quality ? I did the "washer " mod today , it  has improved the temps...

so far im just using the stock bios. I didnt update it yet. Maybe you can post the washer mod today so that other users can try it out also.

Hi- it s  quite easy- you got  5 screws  with the springs that attach the  heatsink.  Simply  remove them  and  apply the plastic  washers  and  screw them back. The  washer  increases the purchase  of the  screws  and  increases  the    pressure of the heatsink.

Some cards do not have  that great amount of the ceramic  stuff  on the chip  and this might help.  :grin:
