upgrading/fixing the keyboard on a GT70 0NC - is there a firmware update for a Sunrex V139922AK1 keyboard?

Hi all! I'm a seasoned tech with a GT70 0NC, faulty original Sunrex V123322AK1, and a possible replacement in the form of a new Sunrex V139922AK1 handy.

Both keyboards have LED backlighting and the connectors and general appearance are identical.

I've installed the V139922AK1 but the generated codes are different, meaning that for example pressing the A key generates something other than an A character. I can plug in a USB external keyboard to get to the operating system and do things from there. I'm fairly certain this is because the electrical line encodings on the diode matrix are different between the two. However, the V139 fits the chassis just fine, and it looks to be of a better build quality. I bought it for a good price, so I'm not that much out if it doesn't work at the end of the day.

I'm wondering if there is firmware for the GT70 0NC that matches it up with the V13922AK1 keyboard?

Any help would be gratefully appreciated!

Best regards from Denver,
Bill

Finding this firmware might be difficult due to the laptop is old. If this laptop originally came with the Sunrex V123322AK1, you can try purchasing the same keyboard to see if it works properly.

Hi, thanks for responding! I'm very familiar with the possible need to buy an exact replacement. That isn't what I'm asking about - I've been teching for decades on notebooks and other stuff.

Do you know whether MSI issued different firmware for different keyboards, being installed in the same model of notebook, as I'm trying to do here?

It sure looks like the V123 was made with a different style of keypress detection electronics and hardware, and is not as robust as what is in the V139 version. I don't know that but it appears so based on what I can see under magnification. So I just have two questions: 1) did MSI issue different firmware on their notebooks, in order to provide an upgrade path for their keybeds in general, and 2) if so, if anyone can specify which firmware for the GT70 0NC would work with a Sunrex V139922AK1

Also, if anyone has suggestions for other forums with MSI notebook experience to ask this question, that would be greatly appreciated as well.

Thanks, and yep, I'm asking if either BIOS or EC updates provided support for keyboard replacement in this design, and if so if there's a known EC and/or BIOS version that supports this updated keyboard on a GT70 0NC.

This laptop comes with various keyboards, and the keyboards are typically compatible with specific EC firmware. Therefore, it is not recommended to replace it with a different keyboard. I do not believe that the new EC firmware will support different keyboards. To save your time and effort, you can directly purchase the same keyboard to avoid any issues.

-> This laptop comes with various keyboards, and the keyboards are typically compatible with specific EC firmware.

So now I know that it is the case that specific EC firmware supports specific keyboards. I suspected this already, but great to have confirmation on this point.

I'm unsure why it isn't clear that I very much know what I am doing. I really don't need any further recommendations to save myself time and effort and directly purchase the same keyboard to avoid any issues, etc.

If there's a known EC version identifier that supports a Sunrex V139922AK1 on a GT70 0NC, that would be very helpful information. I'll continue to try to find this information, however I'm becoming concerned about support of MSI products if this type of information isn't readily available, even from a third party. We've even got the Internet Archive if MSI doesn't want to support a simple web page with a matrix on an ongoing basis.

If anyone has a recommendation for a repository of the various EC versions that were made available for these notebooks, as well as other forums that would welcome such queries, that would be fantastic. Thanks for all the replies!

I am afraid that you have to contact MSI support to get the information.
I think they might need to have the information of keyboard you provided to look up the corresponding EC version.
