so I have some 8gb kingston laptop ram ddr4-2400.
MSI GT73VR 7RE TITAN laptop.
If I want to upgrade the ram, do I have to match the timings?
Or can I replace the current ram with something else? IE: Can I buy DDR4-2666 and replace what's currently in there (MSI24D4S7D8MB-8).

no need 2666 memory ,,, your device will still use the lower SPD - 2400mhz
buy identical ! for fully stable duachanel "or 2x 16GB kit" 32GB is best

,.,.and read OC guide "2933mhz is possitible from original ram"
or is send some HINT "have identical machine"

gtx1070 ? no SLI ??

Well the problem I have is finding the exact same memory that is currently in the laptop. MSI24D4S7D8MB-8
The only ones I've been able to find are used or refurbished. and over priced.
That's why I was looking at the higher speed ddr4-2666. More readily available, new and cheaper.

My local computer store has this memory in stock and it's cheap.

KingstonHyperX Impact 8GB DDR4 2666 SO-DIMM (1x 8GB)

Capacity8GB SO-DIMM RAM Stick (1x 8GB RAM Stick)
SpeedDDR4-2666MHz
Memory TypePC4-21300 DDR4 RAM
Pins260-pin SO-DIMM
Intel® XMPSupports Intel® XMP 2.0 Auto Overclocking up to 3200Mhz
TimingsJEDEC / PNP 1: DDR4-2666 CL 15-17-17 @ 1.2Vdc
$49.99 each.
I just wanna make sure they will work, That was the original question. Faster ram will downgrade, i know that.

If XMP doesnt work on notebooks, why do they make notebook memory with XMP???
-------------------------
Ok so as long as it doesn't have XMP on it, I should be able to use the SODIMM memory.
How about this?
Patriot Memory Signature Line DDR4 8GB (1x8GB) SODIMM Frequency: 2400MHz (PC4-19200) 1.2 Volt
This ram has the same timings as the Kingston ram currently in my laptop. (17-17-17-39)
