You’re right it’s not ideal to do it but running the computer on cooler boost with almost no load for an few hours or so a day didn’t seem to be hurting the computer while I waited the few weeks till my fan came in from Ali express

Have you bricked a computer before thinking you were doing something correct?

We had no Google, no CoPilot, no internet. We learned by our own mistakes from scratch.
Young people today have so much possibilities. Why they are not using them before the mistakes?

I was wrong in thinking it wouldn’t be enough voltage to mess with the board

You’re correct. I should’ve done more research. But out of excitement to finally fix it and my enthusiasm I just went for it.

I am teenager and second computer science major and computers are my passion so I guess I got ahead of myself and reached over my head for this repair. I went off of previous experience with the same laptop in hopes it would be enough as I wasn’t able to find much information about this laptop online. I still hope I’ll be able to fix this and I’m not done trying. But I realize my faults and intend to learn more about this topic specifically

Thanks for the insight and I look forward to more advice/assistance from everyone in this forum

My biggest mistake have I told before.
And no I never bricked a Computer. And my first Computer was something similar to RemusM picture.
For me bricked means a failed BIOS update, frying a motherboard is another level.
Under Linux sudo rm - fr * is dangerous but mostly fine but sudo rm - fr /* .... (sudo rm -rf meme) :ROFLMAO:

That's not a picture.
It's a computer made by myself in 1986.
From scratch, not with ready-to-use components like these days (now any moron can build a computer :biggrin:).
It was 100% compatible with ZX Spectrum Sinclair.
A lot of fun and a lot of learning ...

I have a response awaiting moderation approval to our conversation. But I mentioned I am wrong and I believe it’s due to my excitement or hastiness because I’m new to all of this

I’m very interested in learning more about that computer you built but before I ask about that. I wanna take this moment because I’m around a bunch of people who know way more than I do and have way more experience than I do. Do you guys have any advice? Like learning paths to get to where you are now. Or any neat things you’ve learned along the way. I’m trying to make my own path getting my degree. Just starting working in manjarno Linux. And hopefully one day to get a fulfilling tech job. And I’ve never ask for help from people online and it’s pretty enlightening

My way (and I think I can speak for most of the others also) to get this experience is history. No longer possible. Times change, technology changes, the way how we learn has changed.

The Linux way has also changed. We are no longer compile our own Kernels, no longer dive in make files to find this bracket which is on the wrong line.
We still edit configuration files but this is not the same.
To learn more about Linux the Arch Linux Wiki is one of the best resources. At some point to install a Arch Linux even if it is in a virtual machine ...
But I don't like the attitude of the Arch People ( I use Arch btw ). F**k these people and their pride. That I don't use Arch means not that I am unable to install and to use it.
Even the Arch way has started to change, they have now a "Arch Install Script".
I use Manjaro btw. :ROFLMAO:
I am not a member in the Manjaro forum but I follow it. Friendly and helpful people if you follow the forum rules.

Edit:
If you use a Rolling Release (and Manjaro is a Rolling Release) then it is a good idea to look in the forum before you do a bigger update. Makes things much easier when you know about possible problems.

That is some good advice. Manjaro is my first dive into Linux. I’ve tried some Ubuntu work with a raspberry pi which was really neat but I saw Hyprland and i was sold on it and I’m extremely interested in learning more. It’s a bit daunting trying to learn everything new though. I have another device running Ubuntu server to host a Minecraft server but I’m stuck when it comes to connecting to the terminal through ssh over my network. I hear port forwarding a terminal is dangerous. I find all of these new computer software and hardware I’m working with fascinating and I love learning more

Would you recommend to use arch by itself vs. a separate distro (manjaro, endeavorOS, …)

No answer. Find your own distribution.
Starting as a newbie with a rolling release is... An interesting approach. I am not saying don't do it. But the learning curve is steep.

I know that it exists but i am old school. My Desktop looks like Windows 10.

  1. 1. Unplug charger
  2. 2. Open laptop
  3. 3. Disconnect battery cable
  4. 4. Hold power button 30 sec
  5. 5. Reseat RAM sticks
  6. 6. Disconnect NEW fan
  7. 7. Plug charger only
  8. 8. Try turning on
Most likely:
  1. a. RAM moved
  2. b. battery connector loose
  3. c. bad replacement fan
If still dead:
possible motherboard short/fuse issue during repair.
