Hi there... here's my anomaly:
I have an internal floppy/7in1 multicard reader. The connectors for the floppy in clude a floppy cable and a direct connection to one of the USB connectors on the MSI motherboard. The other USB connector I attached to the front mounted USB connectors on my case. This has been fine, except for one random occurrence...
In Windows, occasionally the USB card reader drives are not detected. Ordinarily they would appear as two seperate "removable" drives in Explorer, but sometimes not at all. This would also have the side effect of disabling all the icons in the Explorer Folder pane (randomly enough...) also the USB controller section of Control Panel's Device manager showed "Unknown Device" attacehd - the multicard reader drive I assumed. I know the USB stuff works (at least those mounted to the board) as I have an iPod that works fine
So here were my thoughts and actions:
1) Reduced my FSB overclocks, Fast/Turbo and RAM agressive timings in case instability was the problem - basically reset everything to defaults.
Result -- It worked! for a while.... then it came back after a reboot or two.
2) Attempted all combinations of USB settings in the BIOS
Result -- It worked! for a while.... then it came back after a reboot or two.
3) Removed the "IdleEnable" setting from the Registry to increase USB polling
Result -- No effect.
4) Removed both USB connectors, rebooted
Result -- Of course the drives weren't connected so Explorer looked a bit naked still, but it proved that it wasn't faulty USB as the "Unknown Device" disappeared from Device manager
5) Plugged in only the Multi-card USB connector to the motherboard
Result -- It worked... like first time, and after several reboots and swapping the ports
6) Plugged the front mount USB ports from my case back into the spare port in the opposite configuration to what it was originally
Result -- failure, instantly! so there's my proof it's related to having both ports in use, but hang on, isn't the board good for 8?
Notes: I've used BIOS 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3b2 and had the same effect on all three. I have also checked that all ports are enabled in BIOS, etc. The rest of my specs are in my sig. I'm currently on BIOS 1.2, but may go back to 1.3b2 or 1.30 when it's released.
Can someone enlighten me to why this might be happening? My case is the the ThermalTake LanFire LM2000A.
Cheers, and sorry for the long post, it's a bizarre error. I am thinking it might also be related to the error I was having (https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?threadid=42751&sid=) with the windows hard drive addressing (as in it would "lose" two drive letters hence not be able to address the correct drive when sending data to the bus) but i haven't really focused on testing this.
