My setup:
X79A-GD65 8D (Bios v1.8)
i7-3930k
Gskillz 4x 4GB (F3-12800CL8Q-16GBZH)
The story:
Oh man, it's a long story. I'll try to keep this short. Back in 2011/2012, I had issues with this board because I initially had a i7-3820. Eventually was able to get the BIOS to a version needed for the chip. Also had some PSU issues. Fast forward to about 2015 or early 2016 - I was doing a 'maintenance day', and updated just about everything that I could on my system (drivers, etc). Also went to flash bios, and boom - bricked. Lucky that the board has a dual-bios. However, 2nd bios never was updated. Had to RMA board to MSI. Tried to see if they could fix BIOS #1, but that was basically a "nope". So they flashed BIOS #2 to v1.8. When I got the board back I also upgraded my CPU to the I7-3930k. Everything posted - except for the memory. At the time (and I didn't have a lot of time to mess around with it) I could only get the system to post with 1 dimm. About a week ago, I started using the system more frequently and 4GB just doesn't cut it. So again, went into maintenance mode and started getting a number of things checked off from my to-do list. The above post seems to have done some help, but I'm still coming up a bit short.
The issue:
At time of writing, I have 3 of the 4 dimms installed - giving me 12GB: currently seated in slots 1, 5, and 7. If I add the fourth dimm to slot 3 and power on, I get a debug code of b7 or it could be a 67. I've seen on this forum among other places that this appears to be related to a mem training issue. Should be noted that when I had the 3820 installed, I was able to get 16GB. I may have changed some BIOS back then (again, 2012-ish) to get that to work, but I honestly can't remember. Ultimately would love to be running at 16GB. I've swapped the dimms around to make sure I didn't have a bad stick; and as far as I can tell - I don't. Oddly, the way I got 12GB to work was as follows:
Installed to:
Slots 1 and 3 - result b7
Slots 1 and 5 - posted
Slots 1 and 7 - posted
Slots 1, 5, and 7 - posted
Slots 1, 3, 5, 7 - b7
... started getting creative
1, 2, 3, 4 - b0 / 60
1, 5, 6, 7 - b0 / 60
...
eventually was just ok with running on 12GB until I find a solid fix.
Using this post, I did change the values as described in the OC Settings. I actually dropped my numbers down to 8, 8, 8, 24 - which seems to be running just fine. I've also gone back and forth between enabling XMP - but doesn't appear to have an effect.
Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated. As you can imagine, I'm a bit hesitant to flash bios again... otherwise I'd be completely out of a board
[Edit: I also noticed that the voltage was just under 1.5 for both channels a and b. I believe I've manually set these for all DDR channels to 1.55... now I can't remember if my 12GB was able to post before making that change or not]
