Via vs. Promise???

:confused2: Question- I am setting up the K8T Neo-FIS2R Mobo and would like to know what the difference is between the the SATA Via and Promise options??? Is one better than the other or do I just flip a coin??? Thanks.
 
via = slighty ever so faster .. i believe but NO working hdd light
promise = slighty slower ... so they say .. YES the hdd light works

depends if the blinking light is a dominant factor

i run the via myself as thats how the chipset is designed in my logic
 
I've seen reviews indicating that each controller is faster than the other and each one uses more system resources than the other. I personally use the Promise controller and have had absolutely no problems whatsoever. If you search the forum however, you will find tons of people who could never get the Promise to work at all. Even though I use the Promise, I may recommend the Via just in case you may have problems loading Windows with the Promise. That's just one less thing to worry about with your new system.
 
Thanks guys, Okay I'm up and running on 2 36G WD raptors on raid 0 using the Via chipset. It seems fine - I don't really know how to test their speed.
But I have two new problems...
First my Asus 9800XT is acting up, I'm getting paralell lines across my screen or on my desktop icons??? I've tried reinstalling the drivers but it's still not happy. Also the Homeworld 2 3D game is freezing up intermittenly. I'm starting to wonder why I paid almost $500 for this graphic card. :angryfire:
Second I getting a bios not found notice on boot up for the promise chipset, I have loaded the software from CD and floppy. Any suggestions?????? o_0
 
Hi

Bios not installed. goto Integrated peripherals, then onboard PCI controller, then P20378 controller, and disable. save settings and reboot. sometimes it takes a power off or a couple of rests to make it disappear.

Was getting vertical red lines on nvidea based card, sorted by using the Powerforce driver 53.13 and later (now 53.14)

I'm not ashamed to say it. I am a little confused by this whole SATA thing. I have an asus board previously and was all ready to dive into the SATA scarios running two raptors in RAID 0 array with their silicon chip. Then I decided to go 64 bit and have two choices here. The Promise Fastrak376/378 seems to be similar to Silicon Image Sil 3112A RAID Controller only some folk seem to have some problems with it here and as far as i can tell there are no updated drivers for the Promise 376/378 nor can I find any real support from Promise's website. It runs onlt 2 SATA drives and appeared to be what I wanted.

Then I move onto the VIA SATA drives of which VIA's website recognizes as VT8267. It is a southbridge and allows 0+1 and the mirroring drive is a ATA drive (2?). Likewise I saw no updated drivers for the VIA from their site but my MOBO DID come with Promise and VIA drivers. That may be all I need.
My inclination seems to be to use the VIA, but I am unsure of the ATA drives I would use IF I use them. For a RAID array the drives should be the same. So you would need two 36 Gig raptors, but what about the ATAs?? Do they need to be the same size. Striping my 36 Gig Raptors gives me a hard Drive of 2X36 = 72 Gigs. Does the ATA drive have to be a 72 gig drive??
Ultimately I am confused, because the manual Speaks of the Promise providing 0+1 and yet VIA's web site speaks of 0+1.

I am a little confused. I have read completely through the manuals and am confused about how to set up my system. I have 4 ports for a SATA device and a 3rd IDE port which will support 2 extra IDE drives (perhaps just 1). Really, it took me 6 months to understand 0 now I have to deal with 0+1. Is there a way it can be explained in laymen terms?

p.s. how much slower is mirroring and do the current drivers still have problems with large file transfers?
 
as a follow up, I have two questions. If I put two raptors in RAID 0 array and have a few IDE drives for storage(?) then I was thinking that I would put my pagefile on the array and load programs onto the IDE drives while the OS resides on the array. That way if I have to reinstall I only have to reinstall the OS an not all of my programs (maybe).

Just have one SATA drive and put the OS pagefile on that drive ONLY for system performance and leave it at that. That would make a rather expensive way to improve system performance. I DO NOT have SATA at the moment, but my pagefile reside on a non-OS drive. Though I would likely have a performance gain if that pagefile drive were on a seperate IDE port altogether.
 
Hey knownalien I see you have a setup imilar to mine, did you have a problem with you AIW card shutting down your sys, and do you remember if your ram was v1.1 or v1.2. I have tried and enermax 465ax, but my sys won't stay up, so I'm waiting for a PC Power & Cooling 510, if it doesn't work I'll be RMA'ing this board back to Newegg.

i'll tell you exactly what i did BUT it requires a 3rd stick that will post in the default settings (I used this one: http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=20-156-006&depa=0)

once there, you set the timings and voltage to 2.7 volts for your DDR and your timings to 2-3-2-6.

Then you shut down and replace the Twinx PC3200 in slots 1 and 3 and then boot up.

I had absolutely no problems with my ATI card, but I have had that for a year.
 
Thanks knownalien, I gave it a try but I think I just got a bum board. I can post up to the bios choice screen, del, F11, f10 and so on but my keyboard is locked out and I've tried 4 different ones with no luck. I guess RMA it is!!!!
 
In the device manager you need to select Disk Drives and then your properties for your raid drives. Under the SCSI Properties Tab you will find a couple choices if your parts support the features. If they are ghosted then typically your parts do not support the features. In this case Tagged Cueing is one of the options you can change.

thing is I don't have a RAID aray yet, so I can't check. It would be nice to be able to find out if the Promise 376/378 or VIA VT8237 supported this. That way I could know now whether to get the 74 gig raptor or the 36 gig raptor. I was just going by this article:

help me out here: both Promise and Via support 0+1 and thus both can use the IDE 3 or just one of them can use IDE 3?

Because in the manual it speaks of the Promise as the hybrid solution but the VT8237 supports V-RAID 0+1 too.

I am confused. For the moment a 74 Gig Raptor is on its way and I am wondering which controller to use.

also, what partition size should I use?


don't laugh, but for the moment it will only be used to plage mypagefile on, but it's gonna be a big one . . . . maybe 1.5 gigs.
 
as a extra tip ... for anyone about to install on the via controller .. when u set the array up .. choose a 32K stripe instead of the default 64K ... gives a nice performance boost without increasing the risk of corruption significantly
