Video Card questions

I'm wondering what would make a computer that is working fine one day come up the next with a "signal out of range" problem. I just repartitioned and reformatted and reinstalled win98se all over. I'm using an MSI GeForce 2 pro but I'm using the windows drivers right now. If I change to the msi drivers that came with the card I'll get to up my resolution and color palette but in a few days I know when I turn it on it'll come up with a "signal out of range". Could this be caused by a bad video card or bad drivers or some strange compatability issue I haven't figured out yet?

trinkulus,

What monitor are you using. Also how old is it? Sounds like the refresh rate is too high, but I do not have yous specs on your computer to refer to.

Take Care,

Richard

It's a ctx. About 2 years old, maybe 3. I know when I get the signal out of range I can go back in safe mode and change the refresh rate to default and I'll get it back. But I believe when I use a different monitor I still get the same troubles. I can check this night to see if I get it on my vx1120 monitor. It's been a wonderful monitor and it's strange that I'm getting this trouble. Why would the refresh rate be okay one second and too high the next? I just checked the refresh rate from the monitor and it gives me(at 640X480) H:31.5 KHZ and V:60.3 HZ. Thanks for replying.

I just tried out the vx1120 and even loaded the plug & play drivers for it. Still had the same troubles. Now I even notice the problem on the windows screen it shows while it loads windows(the one with the blue bar that runs back and forth). I feel certain that my other video card was giving me the same problem. Could a lack of power to a video card, overtime, cause it to be like this? I checked the psu on my old computer at it was 200W max( like 78W on the 3.3 and 5 lines).

trinkulus,

I think you nailed it. You should try a new Power Supply next. I think you will find that is your problem.

Good Luck,

Richard

I don't think the psu is the problem. The one I am currently using is an antec 350W(230 on the 3.3 and 5 combined lines). I was simply asking if the card, being in the other computer with it's less than adequate psu could "burnout" the card or something strange.

One final bit of info I found out. I'm using a ctx monitor and I'm using the plug and play drivers. I found the ctx drivers online. I'm unsure which monitor I'm using so it may take some time to figure out which ones I need but could this perhaps be part of the problem?

trinkulus,

You should give the monitor drivers a shot, but the monitor should be Plug and Play compatible. CTX does not have the best reputation on the market for Monitors, but I do not want to rule out the card just yet.

Richard

Well I have tried both sets of drivers and none of them pick up over the plug and play ones and I am unable to figure out which monitor I have so I can't tell it to use certain ones. So it looks like the ctx monitor drivers are out. But I doubt that's the problem as the other computer I use has a better card and has given me no trouble as of yet. So besides a bad video card, anything I should try or look for?

Well I first off want to thank you for spending you time trying to help. And if anyone has any suggestions please feel free to post.
