There is a common problem with the latest BIOS updates for Z490 boards: The update seems to finish, the PC reboots, but then it's stuck with the EZ Debug LED "CPU" being on.

The danger has first appeared with the April/May 2021 BIOS update (changelog: "Improved Audio compatibility"), and may continue with newer updates as well, potentially causing the same issue: The board can become unusable / "bricked" because of a failed flash process.

Note that there is no risk of this with BIOS updates for MSI mainboards using other chipsets (like Z390, B460, Z590, B560, Z690, B660, X470, B450, X570, B550, and so on).
This can only happen on MSI Z490 boards. People with other boards can update normally.

The first reports about a Z490 BIOS update causing problems was at the beginning of May 2021: z490 Tomahawk CPU Debug LED Stuck on after latest BIOS update
Then in May 2021, this thread: Warning : V17 bios for Z490 Gaming Edge Wifi release Monday may brick your board., and several more after.

I have found no reports of problems with any of the earlier BIOS updates, only with the ones from mid-2021 and newer. Also, this problem doesn't happen all the time, otherwise this forum would be absolutely flooded with complaints. But it is a real danger, as you will see below when i list some of the affected users.

Normally i'm all for updating the BIOS, and i do it pretty much immediately on my boards whenever a new BIOS is released. And this Z490 issue is the first such problem i ever saw. But the main problem is: Unlike some newer-generation boards, most of the Z490 boards have no way of recovering from it. For most people, the only way to solve this would be to RMA the board, or try their luck with an external BIOS programming device. The only Z490 boards where it's no problem are the two sister boards MEG Z490 UNIFY and ACE, and the MEG Z490 GODLIKE, because those three have a USB Flashback function (Flash BIOS Button). There you can flash back to an older version and the board works again, or you can even flash the newest version until it works (once the BIOS is successfully flashed, even the three newest versions will work fine).

The newer Z590, Z690 and Z790 boards now almost all have a Flash BIOS Button (and corresponding USB port) on the rear I/O panel through which users can "force-flash" the BIOS in case of problems. So i guess MSI rather add that function everywhere now, instead of dealing with RMAs of bricked boards when something goes wrong. Once you have this "USB Flashback" feature on a board, a problem like this becomes harmless, because you can just re-flash the latest BIOS and make it work again.

I have researched about all the users i could find that have been affected by this, so everyone can see the full scope of the problem. I don't think i exaggerate when i claim that this is a huge problem for MSI and their reputation, and to my knowledge, they have not reacted until this day. They released the September BIOS update for Windows 11 compatibility, and while such an update went well on my Z590 board at the time, as expected (plus it has the safety net of the Flash USB Button), there are still reports of the similar Z490 update potentially causing this problem there. Each day, there are many people updating their BIOS on MSI mainboards without any issues, and only on Z490 boards we see this kind of problem.

As a longtime MSI user, this kind of problem with the Z490 boards is unacceptable, even if i don't have a Z490 board myself.
Therefore, i decided to try to bring further attention to it, so hopefully MSI can do something about it as soon as possible.

Update October 7, 2021: MSI are now seemingly aware of this issue, as was confirmed on a German forum by an official MSI account. I will update this post/thread if there is any progress.

Update October 29, 2021: A user received a link from MSI with a tool for manual flashing from the command line. However, this is just an interim solution if you absolutely want to update to the newest Z490 BIOS and reduce the risk of failure. We are still waiting for them to upload new BIOS updates where this potential problem is 100% fixed.

Update March 6, 2022: Still no solution from MSI.

Update August 17, 2023: Still nothing from MSI, although there are considerably less cases now than there have been two years ago, we barely get any new victims. So maybe the newest BIOS versions are way less problematic again. As for updating an MSI Z490 board, i now recommend using the Forum Flash Tool as linked here. There has been no corrupt Z490 BIOS reported with it yet.

If the problem already happened, the best do-it-yourself solution by far is this kind of method with an external flash programmer (bit more info here), it has a 100% success rate from what i have read so far. Meaning, more or less everyone that seriously tried that method could eventually flash their BIOS with it and get the board back to a working state. So for everyone wanting to avoid a possibly lengthy RMA process, this is a viable option. The programming device is quite cheap, but it involves a bit of research and spirit of adventure. Luckily, there are good guides about it on Youtube for example.

One final word: It is important not to be put off from doing BIOS updates altogether by this. BIOS updates fix bugs, add new features, and they even improve performance. It is extremely rare that a whole line of mainboard models has such a potential problem. So, nobody should conclude never to do any BIOS updates again, that would be the wrong thing to learn from this. Instead, once this problem is fixed for the Z490 boards, the BIOS updates can once again be an important way to make the system work better, faster, and with less bugs. On other boards with a Flash BIOS Button as a safety net, there is literally no reason to shy away from any BIOS updates. Even here with the Z490 boards, whenever users with the the boards Z490 ACE, UNIFY or GODLIKE were affected, they could easily recover from it using the Flash BIOS Button. This problem could only become so big because all the other Z490 board models from MSI didn't have the Flash BIOS Button yet.

Whenever i have seen your reply and included it in the statistics, i will give a "thumbs up" for it to thank you for your participation.

Also, feel free to refer to this thread in your communication with the vendor or with MSI. Hopefully MSI will finally start to recognize this problem and do something about it.

Someone asked me if they can thank me for my work by sending me something via Paypal: Yes, that's possible, just write me a message and i'll tell you my Paypal 😉

Hi, please add one more to the list.

Date of failed flashing: 5th of November, 2021
Affected board model: Z490 Gaming Edge Wifi
CPU: i9 10850K
Flashing method used: MSI Center
Attempted update to BIOS version: 7C79v1A
Result: No post, stuck with CPU debug led on
XMP profiles enabled, and used Turbo offset instead of all core frequency mode in default.

Clearing the CMOS, removing the BIOS battery didn't change anything as you know.

Hi, I recently bought a MSI B460 TOMAHAWK motherboard and if I update the bios to the latest version 7C81v13, the problem with the MSI Z490 GAMING EDGE WIFI update won't happen again?

Note that there is no risk of this happening with BIOS updates for MSI mainboards using other chipsets (Z390, B460, Z590, B560, X470, X570, B450, B550, etc.).
This can only happen on MSI Z490 boards. People with other boards can update normally.

Citay, I have a question for you. What would you do, if you were me.
My hardware is: Intel i7 10700 + be quiet! Dark Rock Slim

MSI Z490 Gaming Edge Wifi

G.SKILL TridentZ 16GB (2x8GB) 3600MHz CL16

MSI RTX 3070 Gaming X Trio 8GB

Now I have the possibility to buy the new z590 gaming edge wifi motherboard cheaply. Including MSI cashback, in-store promotion and the sale of my current used z490 gaming edge wifi, this exchange will cost me around 100 Polish zlotys, so $ 35 US. Would you wait for the bios to improve on the z490 or would you buy the z590 for peace of mind?

Hello, I have different kind of problems, after updating BIOS to version 7C73v1a on my mobo (MSI Z490 GAMING CARBON WIFI) I started getting WHEA errors in Windows Event Logger:

A corrected hardware error has occurred.

Reported by Component: CPU Core
Error source: Unknown Error Source
Error type: Internal parity error
Controller ID CPU APIC : 7

Can I safely downgrade the BIOS to version 7C73v19? I never had those kind of errors before.
My specs:
MSI Z490 GAMING CARBON WIFI
Intel 10850K
RAM 32GB x2 16 G.Skill 4000.CL17
RTX 3090 Gaming OC
Sound Blaster AE-7
SSD Nvme 2TB x2
Windows 10 21H1 latest updates

so $ 35 US. Would you wait for the bios to improve on the z490 or would you buy the z590 for peace of mind?

For that small amount of money, and if it's no big hassle for you, i'd get the Z590.

- All Z590 boards (except the one Mini-ITX model) have a Flash BIOS Button feature, so you can update without any worries
- The CPU power delivery (VRM) was updated from discrete MOSFETs (a lot of Z490) to integrated Powerstages (all Z590)
- The display outputs were updated from DP 1.2 / HDMI 1.4b to DP 1.4a / HDMI 2.0b
- More fast native USB ports
- PCIe 4.0 for one M.2 SSD and graphics card (but only with 11th gen CPU, with your 10th gen the first M.2 slot will be disabled)
- WLAN updated from WIFI6 to WIFI6E
- Sound chip updated to newer model
- Intel LAN chip instead of Realtek

Again, only do it if it's no big problem for you time- and effort-wise. You know how much is involved in changing the motherboard, so if you don't enjoy doing such a thing, you may as well wait for MSI to sort things out for the Z490 BIOS updates.

Hello, I have different kind of problems, after updating BIOS to version 7C73v1a on my mobo (MSI Z490 GAMING CARBON WIFI) I started getting WHEA errors in Windows Event Logger:

This is indeed a different problem, so please make a new thread about it. But right now, any BIOS flashing on Z490 of the last three updates, no matter if update or "downdate", is potentially dangerous. Yes, it doesn't happen all the time, otherwise we would have a lot more cases. But i cannot call the flashing process "safe" on Z490 right now, sadly.

I don't really feel like it, but I also don't want to be stuck on this z490 without updating forever. And we don't know if MSI is doing anything about it, the problem has been around since April. I have a theory that maybe the problem is not with the last three BIOSes, but with the one from February 2021. He introduced support for the 11th generation and sometimes the next bios upload ends with a CPU error, maybe this bios from February breaks something in some situations and it is manifested by incorrect upload newer versions. This would explain why MSI does not find a bug in these versions because maybe it is not there and the defective one was the one from February.

It is a pity that in these reports of unsuccessful updates there is no version of what people were updating from, that would make it clear if my theory makes sense.

Sadly I didn't see this thread in time before I did the BIOS update in MSI Dragon Center on my 10 year old sons pc. I have updated the BIOS like this several times before every time successfully, but this time after the BIOS update completed at 100% and the the pc was about to reboot and monitor turned black screen and MB had CPU LED on. All RGB light effects were still on inside the cabinet.

Date of failed flashing: 6 november 2021
Affected board model: MPG Z490 gaming edge wifi
CPU:i5 10600K
Flashing method used: MSI Dragon Center
Attempted update to BIOS version: 7C79v1A from the previous one in MSI dragon, which I believe was 1.90 ,but when looking on MSI official BIOS download page it goes from 18 to 1A, so maybe they removed it.
Result: No post, stuck with CPU debug led on. Clearing the CMOS, removing the BIOS battery didn't change anything.

I have not yet reported this to MSI or retailer, since I need to disassemble the computer and send to retailer and then they will send to MSI and back again. This process will takes to long, so will give it a try myself.
Thanks to this forum I have located the bios chip and found useful instructions for manually updating the bios and are now planning to get a CH341a USB programmer to manually go back to version 7C79v16.

Yup, that's it. You are officially the 100th affected user that i recorded for this thread. I previously said that i wonder what will happen first, 100 cases here or a fix from MSI, and we have our answer...

Thanks to this forum I have located the bios chip and found useful instructions for manually updating the bios and are now planning to get a CH341a USB programmer to manually go back to version 7C79v16.

When you have the USB programmer and it works properly, you can actually flash 7C79v1A on there. Since the problem doesn't happen all the time with all people updating their Z490, it means that the BIOS - once successfully flashed - works fine. There is something going wrong in the last phase of the flashing process sometimes, or so it seems. If you circumvent that with a USB programmer, you can flash the latest version and it should work.

Just got my computer from NZXT BLD. Turned it on to do all the things.

Really sad about this. Computer isn't even 24 hours old. :(

Gosh I really feel bad for the people facing this issue. More so with a brand new computer. Id go mad at myself if this happen. Considering I was out of a computer for two months. I hope MSI Resolves this issue soon for everyone.... On side note. I'm sure many people now either A) Won't update there bios ever again. B). Will check here to be sure next bios for any motherboard from MSI is good to go. I'm leaning more on B when it comes to me and updates of bios. Though presently see no point of updating bios any time soon.

You don't have to do neither A) nor B) when your board has a Flash BIOS Button, because then you can always simply force-flash to an older BIOS version, even if the board doesn't boot anymore.
With the USB Flashback feature becoming standard on newer MSI board models, there is much less reason to worry about a BIOS update. This Z490 situation is only so severe because the vast majority of the boards don't have a way to recover from a failed update yet.

Ah ok. Thank you for the information. I thought the flash bios button was only to flash new bios. Good to know my z590 gaming plus has it.

You can flash an older version with it, or also the same one again until it works, which is what i would try in a case like this (because the BIOS should be fine, but something can go wrong during the normal update process). Of course, you always try it with M-FLASH (from within the BIOS) first for a regular update, because that is more convenient and faster. But if there's a problem with the normal update method, you can fall back on the Flash BIOS Button.

Had previously upgraded BIOS versions every few months before using the same method with no issues, but this latest BIOS version was the one that got me.

Date of failed flashing: Nov 9
Affected board model: MPG Z490 GAMING EDGE WIFI
CPU: I5-10600k
Flashing method used: MSI Dragon Center
Attempted update to BIOS version: 7C79v1A
Result: Stuck at EZ Debug LED "CPU" after update.

I used the little clip thing directly onto the bios chip. CMOS battery and power cables removed from m/b. ASProgrammer version 1.41. I followed this guide for the actual process.
Thank you so much!
Ordered, followed the guide you linked.
Motherboard works like a charm!
Also had Tomahawk z490 cpu debug light after what appeared to be successful bios upgrade (only until it restarted).

It does work.

If yours still under warranty which I assume it is. I’d do a RMA to have it replaced.

Updating a BIOS...

Will the person's heart rhythm be disturbed while doing this? Yes... Because there is a big question mark: "the system will boot or not?" Is this a simple operation or a nightmare? What a ridiculous thing...

Moreover MSI doesn't even care... They do nothing to fix the problem.

Buying MSI again? never...
