There is a common problem with the latest BIOS updates for Z490 boards: The update seems to finish, the PC reboots, but then it's stuck with the EZ Debug LED "CPU" being on.

The danger has first appeared with the April/May 2021 BIOS update (changelog: "Improved Audio compatibility"), and may continue with newer updates as well, potentially causing the same issue: The board can become unusable / "bricked" because of a failed flash process.

Note that there is no risk of this with BIOS updates for MSI mainboards using other chipsets (like Z390, B460, Z590, B560, Z690, B660, X470, B450, X570, B550, and so on).
This can only happen on MSI Z490 boards. People with other boards can update normally.

The first reports about a Z490 BIOS update causing problems was at the beginning of May 2021: z490 Tomahawk CPU Debug LED Stuck on after latest BIOS update
Then in May 2021, this thread: Warning : V17 bios for Z490 Gaming Edge Wifi release Monday may brick your board., and several more after.

I have found no reports of problems with any of the earlier BIOS updates, only with the ones from mid-2021 and newer. Also, this problem doesn't happen all the time, otherwise this forum would be absolutely flooded with complaints. But it is a real danger, as you will see below when i list some of the affected users.

Normally i'm all for updating the BIOS, and i do it pretty much immediately on my boards whenever a new BIOS is released. And this Z490 issue is the first such problem i ever saw. But the main problem is: Unlike some newer-generation boards, most of the Z490 boards have no way of recovering from it. For most people, the only way to solve this would be to RMA the board, or try their luck with an external BIOS programming device. The only Z490 boards where it's no problem are the two sister boards MEG Z490 UNIFY and ACE, and the MEG Z490 GODLIKE, because those three have a USB Flashback function (Flash BIOS Button). There you can flash back to an older version and the board works again, or you can even flash the newest version until it works (once the BIOS is successfully flashed, even the three newest versions will work fine).

The newer Z590, Z690 and Z790 boards now almost all have a Flash BIOS Button (and corresponding USB port) on the rear I/O panel through which users can "force-flash" the BIOS in case of problems. So i guess MSI rather add that function everywhere now, instead of dealing with RMAs of bricked boards when something goes wrong. Once you have this "USB Flashback" feature on a board, a problem like this becomes harmless, because you can just re-flash the latest BIOS and make it work again.

I have researched about all the users i could find that have been affected by this, so everyone can see the full scope of the problem. I don't think i exaggerate when i claim that this is a huge problem for MSI and their reputation, and to my knowledge, they have not reacted until this day. They released the September BIOS update for Windows 11 compatibility, and while such an update went well on my Z590 board at the time, as expected (plus it has the safety net of the Flash USB Button), there are still reports of the similar Z490 update potentially causing this problem there. Each day, there are many people updating their BIOS on MSI mainboards without any issues, and only on Z490 boards we see this kind of problem.

As a longtime MSI user, this kind of problem with the Z490 boards is unacceptable, even if i don't have a Z490 board myself.
Therefore, i decided to try to bring further attention to it, so hopefully MSI can do something about it as soon as possible.

Update October 7, 2021: MSI are now seemingly aware of this issue, as was confirmed on a German forum by an official MSI account. I will update this post/thread if there is any progress.

Update October 29, 2021: A user received a link from MSI with a tool for manual flashing from the command line. However, this is just an interim solution if you absolutely want to update to the newest Z490 BIOS and reduce the risk of failure. We are still waiting for them to upload new BIOS updates where this potential problem is 100% fixed.

Update March 6, 2022: Still no solution from MSI.

Update August 17, 2023: Still nothing from MSI, although there are considerably less cases now than there have been two years ago, we barely get any new victims. So maybe the newest BIOS versions are way less problematic again. As for updating an MSI Z490 board, i now recommend using the Forum Flash Tool as linked here. There has been no corrupt Z490 BIOS reported with it yet.

If the problem already happened, the best do-it-yourself solution by far is this kind of method with an external flash programmer (bit more info here), it has a 100% success rate from what i have read so far. Meaning, more or less everyone that seriously tried that method could eventually flash their BIOS with it and get the board back to a working state. So for everyone wanting to avoid a possibly lengthy RMA process, this is a viable option. The programming device is quite cheap, but it involves a bit of research and spirit of adventure. Luckily, there are good guides about it on Youtube for example.

One final word: It is important not to be put off from doing BIOS updates altogether by this. BIOS updates fix bugs, add new features, and they even improve performance. It is extremely rare that a whole line of mainboard models has such a potential problem. So, nobody should conclude never to do any BIOS updates again, that would be the wrong thing to learn from this. Instead, once this problem is fixed for the Z490 boards, the BIOS updates can once again be an important way to make the system work better, faster, and with less bugs. On other boards with a Flash BIOS Button as a safety net, there is literally no reason to shy away from any BIOS updates. Even here with the Z490 boards, whenever users with the the boards Z490 ACE, UNIFY or GODLIKE were affected, they could easily recover from it using the Flash BIOS Button. This problem could only become so big because all the other Z490 board models from MSI didn't have the Flash BIOS Button yet.

Whenever i have seen your reply and included it in the statistics, i will give a "thumbs up" for it to thank you for your participation.

Also, feel free to refer to this thread in your communication with the vendor or with MSI. Hopefully MSI will finally start to recognize this problem and do something about it.

Someone asked me if they can thank me for my work by sending me something via Paypal: Yes, that's possible, just write me a message and i'll tell you my Paypal 😉

@citay @Badr.Alyafea156902da
BUT.. I'm totally confused what chip I should flash.
My motherboard: MSI MPG Z490 GAMING CARBON WIFI Mainboard Sockel 1200 (7C73-001R)
Based on @citay description of position it's winbond 25X20CLNIG 2018 (W25X20CLNIG)

View attachment 154703

BUT.. On the place where @Badr.Alyafea156902da explained I have another chip that is shorter and different:
MXIC 25L25673G (MX25L25673G)

View attachment 154704

PLEASE HELP..!!!
I have prepared all the tools for tomorrow to flash the board.
I just need to know exactly what chip I should flash...
I've done a little research and it seems this particular chip is not supported by flashrom (and probably ch341a? not sure):
I had flashed some windbond chips in the past using flashrom+arduino, but those chips had pin layout like: vcc, gnd, clock, cs, input, output, wp, hold (I'm sure ch341a supports this). The one used in our motherboards has: vcc, gnd, clock, cs, io0, io1, io2, io3. There's a big difference, so I'm not sure if it can be flashed using the same methods. The layout can be found at the 6th page of datasheet: https://www.macronix.com/Lists/Datasheet/Attachments/7989/MX25L25673G, 3V, 256Mb, v1.7.pdf
Statistics in the first post says some people actually managed to flash this memory. It would be really helpful if they can post their approach and a little tutorial what to do and if they had the same chip (MX25L25673G).

EDIT:
NVM, It seems somebody has already made a tutorial:

I have been using my board for approximately 3 months, I am so devastated by what happened.

On the official MSI product support page it says that the BIOS version I tried to update to was released on the 18th of October. I cannot believe that MSI still hasn't addressed the problem after such an enormous amount of affected users, nor had the decency to remove the corrupted BIOS drivers from their official services.

I tried opening a ticket for an RMA with MSI customer support, and the response I got was absolutely infuriating.

This is what they replied:

"Dear Sir/Madam,
thank you for contacting the MSI Support.

We're sorry to hear you're experiencing issues with your product.
Please be informed that the BIOS version available for download is the latest and working.
If the unit is faulty, please contact your seller and make a repair request with them.
Please be informed that all warranty responsibilities are given only to the distributor, which means for end-users that warranty repair requests must be made to the shop where the unit was bought.

Best regards,
MSI Customer Service Team "

I then replied to them describing everything that has been reported in this thread, and their next response was:

"Dear Sir/Madam,
thank you for your feedback, it has been passed to the relevant personel, however we have not received any information from the relevant department stating that there's an issue with the BIOS version. If you've experienced an issue with your product, please contact your seller and make an RMA request with them.

We're sorry for any inconvenience caused."

My last hope is to contact the original seller (Amazon), in hopes of getting a replacement board or a repair for my current one.

In the future I will never ever buy an MSI product again, I cannot express how disgusted I am by their scummy behavior and practices.
This is not how you treat your customers, especially when there is a thread on their official forums where there are MORE THAN 100 reported cases of users with the same problem (with god knows how many more who haven't stumbled across this thread and thus haven't shared their experience), which has been going on for months now.

Yes, MSI are failing to tackle this issue, and they are still not connecting the dots, instead thinking that dozens and dozens of their Z490 boards are suddenly faulty...

The reply about doing the RMA through the shop is correct though, depending on the country. Only in some countries you do it via MSI directly, in others, the shop will handle the RMA for you.
Usually it should be no big deal to get the board replaced. But apparently the reason for the RMA gets lost somewhere on the way to MSI. Seemingly they see increased RMAs for Z490, but they don't put it down to their recent BIOS updates causing the problem, otherwise the lack of action can't be explained.

I am now aware of the fact that in most countries the RMA is being handled by the vendor. The main thing in their reply I wanted to emphasize was the clueless claim regarding the status of their BIOS drivers, which they said were "perfectly working and stable". I am shocked that a company of their caliber wouldn't even acknowledge such a critical mistake and do absolutely nothing about it, even after months have passed.

I understand that we already have Z690 motherboards and 12th generation processors and things are moving on pretty fast, but I am sure that a vast majority of users that have upgraded in the past two years, or, reasonably, don't feel the need to upgrade to newer generations yet, will be using the 10th generation processors for the foreseeable future, which is why this is making matters even worse for the average consumer.

The thing is that it only happens sometimes during the update. Otherwise we would probably have many more cases. I have not found the variable that causes it yet. Maybe they're doing something different than the users here on the forum in their testing at MSI, and they always successfully update their Z490 boards there. When they can't reproduce a problem, they can't fix it, that sort of thing.

There also seems to be a lack of communication between all the shops and local MSI service centers and the MSI HQ in Taiwan. The reason for RMAs might not always come through to them. I don't know exactly what's happening, and i don't want to find excuses for them, i'm just trying to understand how this can happen. Hopefully one day MSI can learn from all this and do better.

The BIOS flash went trough to 100%, then it restarted the PC automatically.
RGB lights are working on motherboard and on RAM sticks, fans are spinning as well. No image through dedicated/integrated GPU either with DP or HDMI.
Tried to clear CMOS by removing the battery, and jumping the JBAT1 header. Retried the clearing process for at least 5 times.

Thank you, i included you in the statistics. Sadly, Clear CMOS / removing battery won't help with this. You have to either RMA the board, or if you want to fix it yourself, you have to get a BIOS programming device and flash the BIOS chip directly (clamp onto it and write the BIOS onto it using a special software).

Thank you for your reply! I hope some awereness will be raised so less people would be affected by this.
I initiated the RMA through MSI channels and will contact my vendor as well, but I fear that the vendor wouldn't help as they specifically state in the warranty notice, that BIOS update related failures are not covered by them. Let's see.
In the meantime I would like to try the programming way as well. What is the special software you were referring? I am aware of the CH341a programmer is the toll that I need.

Yeah, for that programmer there's some software you can use, i wasn't referring to anything specific, i just wanted to insinuate that it involves a bit of research.

Wether MSI or your vendor helps you depends on your country. In both cases, it will go through MSI in the end. If you mention this thread and the ongoing issue, with almost 150 confirmed cases during Z490 BIOS updates here on the forum alone, i'm sure you will have no problem to get an RMA, should you want to have it solved that way.

Date of failed flashing: Dec 30, 2021
Affected board model: z490 Gaming Carbon WiFi
CPU: i7-10700k
Flashing method used: Dragon Center
Attempted update to BIOS version: 7C73v1A
Result: Stuck at EZ Debug LED "CPU" after update.

I've had to roll back to my old i7-4770k, to freaking DDR3, to SATA storage speeds, and my ancient Sabertooth z87, which still works. And this board that cost me twice as much as the old one, not only does it not have a flashback button, it also dies after just a bit over a year, because, guess when my warranty expired? Dec 16, 2021. Yep. They won't RMA it because I'm out of warranty. Beautiful end to an already hellish 2021.

Thanks for your feedback, i included you in the stats. You can try if MSI will help you out of goodwill, if you mention this thread and show again how widespread this problem is. Some companies will even help you shorty after the warranty ended, when they realize that they're ultimately to blame for the fault. Alternatively, you have to purchase a BIOS programming device (they're cheap) and force-flash the BIOS chip with that. There are good guides about this , you just have to read this thread to find them, and people have done this successfully before after they got this problem. So it's certainly doable. The board itself will work fine again, once you get the BIOS chip flashed.

Hi, my z490 tomahawk was bricked after bios update cpu led on, i flash older bios from msi site with ch341a asprogrammer 2.0.3a, the bios flash was success but now the board wont turn on, even not show more the cpu led.

With the flash programmer, you don't have to use an older BIOS, because the bricking danger is only present during the normal flashing method that the board does itself. So with the programmer, you can flash the newest BIOS. In your case, there must've gone something else wrong, i would advise you to ask the people who have previously succeeded in using that flash programmer, or look carefully at the different guides for it again. I think you have to flash it again, but this time the proper way, i don't know what you did wrong or what went wrong the first time.

What a mad idea to start a new year with flashing bios... Fortunately I was able to recover using FLASH button in back and pendrive - I went back to 7C71vA9

Yes, you're fortunate that you have a good board model with that button. However, you can flash the newest BIOS using the button.
With the Flash BIOS Button, it should be no problem to flash it, and the newer BIOS itself will run fine.

Thanks for info I will try it next week. I wanted to update BIOS becuase I noticed ~30 second delay after restart/power off (it is after signal to graphics card is cut). I was not sure if it started with previous bios upate or by some device.
