i also used a 32 gig thumb drive formatted to fat32 just to be safe.

current bios
SMBIOSBIOSVersion

There is a new BIOS for the Z490 Tomahawk 7C80v1B. Someone risked an update?
Yeah I'm running it. It seems stable but there were problems.

Firstly, I was running Windows 11. After updating the bios I could no longer login to Windows. My login pin needed to be changed because a major part of my hardware had changed (Apparently). When I clicked the link to go online and resolve the issue it timed out (my Eset firewall was blocking the new connection) I could not disable the firewall in Windows safemode. So I reinstalled Windows (Went back to 10, perhaps a gift in disguise). The second weekend in a row where I've spent most of it reinstalling Windows. At least it seems stable. Temps are the same. My problem with the DisplayPort connection has not been fixed. Every PC reset still requires that I juggle the slot of my video card the cable is plugged in to - just to get the screen to come on. Five DP cables later and several different bios and I still endure it.

Owning a pc used to be fun.

I am also going to install Z490 Tomahawk later this year, but as some users have pointed out, there's no pattern. Many Z490 boards are not afflicted, others quite the opposite. If someone says the latest BIOS update has worked for him/her, it is no news. Until there is an official statement from MSI, I am going to play it safe and not touch anything after April 2 2021. However, if this situation persists for years, as it looks very likely at the moment, I will give it a try sooner or later and be ready to use that CH341A device. Sort of fine for buying a board at a discount price.

I've been watching this thread since october and I also have a z490 tomahawk with a 10700k and I got tired of waiting for so long to get re-bar and other features that i said "f" it and went for it. Happy to say it worked perfectly. Haven't done a bois update in way over a year if my memory serves me right. But i went from v1.30 to the latest v1.b0 and it worked perfectly. My 5.1ghz on all 8 cores at 1.35v still holds and works great. Same for my ram overclock which I have the dram voltages raised to 1.390v being i bought 2 different versions of the corsair ddr4 mem and had to raise voltages back in 2020 for it to be stable. But this was the smoothest I have ever done a bois update on this board. First two were very sketchy while this one went perfectly fine for me. Hope this helps.

Yes I just did that (and also with 1B before that), M-Flash. But I agree with what Doc_Bucket said, " If someone says the latest BIOS update has worked for him/her, it is no news. "
FWIW, last year my flashing of this board failed as described in this thread, and I eventually recovered it myself with the CH341A programmer.
I am hoping that the change to default secure boot leads to less trouble in future with things like having to reset the Windows Hello stuff (PIN) and "hardware change" activation issues.

I just tried this morning through the Dragon Center (no idea of all of this problem), and now I'm here trying to get a solution for my bricked MB, while trying to contact with MSI, Amazon and the Brittish reseller because MSI Spain doesn't offer any kind of support. Really, really disapointed with this brand.
I suppose I'll give a try to the external flasher method, because it seems that I won't find a quick respone from vendors.

Date of failed flashing: July 4, 2022
Affected board model: MPG Z490 GAMING EDGE WIFI
CPU: Intel Core i7-11700K
Flashing method used: Dragon Center
Attempted update to BIOS version: 7C79v1C
Result: Stuck at EZ Debug LED "CPU" after update.
