There is a common problem with the latest BIOS updates for Z490 boards: The update seems to finish, the PC reboots, but then it's stuck with the EZ Debug LED "CPU" being on.

The danger has first appeared with the April/May 2021 BIOS update (changelog: "Improved Audio compatibility"), and may continue with newer updates as well, potentially causing the same issue: The board can become unusable / "bricked" because of a failed flash process.

Note that there is no risk of this with BIOS updates for MSI mainboards using other chipsets (like Z390, B460, Z590, B560, Z690, B660, X470, B450, X570, B550, and so on).
This can only happen on MSI Z490 boards. People with other boards can update normally.

The first reports about a Z490 BIOS update causing problems was at the beginning of May 2021: z490 Tomahawk CPU Debug LED Stuck on after latest BIOS update
Then in May 2021, this thread: Warning : V17 bios for Z490 Gaming Edge Wifi release Monday may brick your board., and several more after.

I have found no reports of problems with any of the earlier BIOS updates, only with the ones from mid-2021 and newer. Also, this problem doesn't happen all the time, otherwise this forum would be absolutely flooded with complaints. But it is a real danger, as you will see below when i list some of the affected users.

Normally i'm all for updating the BIOS, and i do it pretty much immediately on my boards whenever a new BIOS is released. And this Z490 issue is the first such problem i ever saw. But the main problem is: Unlike some newer-generation boards, most of the Z490 boards have no way of recovering from it. For most people, the only way to solve this would be to RMA the board, or try their luck with an external BIOS programming device. The only Z490 boards where it's no problem are the two sister boards MEG Z490 UNIFY and ACE, and the MEG Z490 GODLIKE, because those three have a USB Flashback function (Flash BIOS Button). There you can flash back to an older version and the board works again, or you can even flash the newest version until it works (once the BIOS is successfully flashed, even the three newest versions will work fine).

The newer Z590, Z690 and Z790 boards now almost all have a Flash BIOS Button (and corresponding USB port) on the rear I/O panel through which users can "force-flash" the BIOS in case of problems. So i guess MSI rather add that function everywhere now, instead of dealing with RMAs of bricked boards when something goes wrong. Once you have this "USB Flashback" feature on a board, a problem like this becomes harmless, because you can just re-flash the latest BIOS and make it work again.

I have researched about all the users i could find that have been affected by this, so everyone can see the full scope of the problem. I don't think i exaggerate when i claim that this is a huge problem for MSI and their reputation, and to my knowledge, they have not reacted until this day. They released the September BIOS update for Windows 11 compatibility, and while such an update went well on my Z590 board at the time, as expected (plus it has the safety net of the Flash USB Button), there are still reports of the similar Z490 update potentially causing this problem there. Each day, there are many people updating their BIOS on MSI mainboards without any issues, and only on Z490 boards we see this kind of problem.

As a longtime MSI user, this kind of problem with the Z490 boards is unacceptable, even if i don't have a Z490 board myself.
Therefore, i decided to try to bring further attention to it, so hopefully MSI can do something about it as soon as possible.

Update October 7, 2021: MSI are now seemingly aware of this issue, as was confirmed on a German forum by an official MSI account. I will update this post/thread if there is any progress.

Update October 29, 2021: A user received a link from MSI with a tool for manual flashing from the command line. However, this is just an interim solution if you absolutely want to update to the newest Z490 BIOS and reduce the risk of failure. We are still waiting for them to upload new BIOS updates where this potential problem is 100% fixed.

Update March 6, 2022: Still no solution from MSI.

Update August 17, 2023: Still nothing from MSI, although there are considerably less cases now than there have been two years ago, we barely get any new victims. So maybe the newest BIOS versions are way less problematic again. As for updating an MSI Z490 board, i now recommend using the Forum Flash Tool as linked here. There has been no corrupt Z490 BIOS reported with it yet.

If the problem already happened, the best do-it-yourself solution by far is this kind of method with an external flash programmer (bit more info here), it has a 100% success rate from what i have read so far. Meaning, more or less everyone that seriously tried that method could eventually flash their BIOS with it and get the board back to a working state. So for everyone wanting to avoid a possibly lengthy RMA process, this is a viable option. The programming device is quite cheap, but it involves a bit of research and spirit of adventure. Luckily, there are good guides about it on Youtube for example.

One final word: It is important not to be put off from doing BIOS updates altogether by this. BIOS updates fix bugs, add new features, and they even improve performance. It is extremely rare that a whole line of mainboard models has such a potential problem. So, nobody should conclude never to do any BIOS updates again, that would be the wrong thing to learn from this. Instead, once this problem is fixed for the Z490 boards, the BIOS updates can once again be an important way to make the system work better, faster, and with less bugs. On other boards with a Flash BIOS Button as a safety net, there is literally no reason to shy away from any BIOS updates. Even here with the Z490 boards, whenever users with the the boards Z490 ACE, UNIFY or GODLIKE were affected, they could easily recover from it using the Flash BIOS Button. This problem could only become so big because all the other Z490 board models from MSI didn't have the Flash BIOS Button yet.

Whenever i have seen your reply and included it in the statistics, i will give a "thumbs up" for it to thank you for your participation.

Also, feel free to refer to this thread in your communication with the vendor or with MSI. Hopefully MSI will finally start to recognize this problem and do something about it.

Someone asked me if they can thank me for my work by sending me something via Paypal: Yes, that's possible, just write me a message and i'll tell you my Paypal 😉

Hey I probably managed to find a solution and indirectly the cause of the problem. My motherboard is: MSI Z490-A PRO. Probable fix below, however first I will share my story:

It all started more than a year ago I must point out that I did not update the BIOS ( ewenual automatic windows updates may have d this). I didn't use my computer for some time(about 2 weeks). When I wanted to turn it on there was a problem like on the forum:, fans were running, CPU led was on constantly, black screen. I sent the motherboard back for warranty - to no avail(according to MSI the board works normally). The board in the service was not updated. By chance I found out that my friend has the same MOBO and had the same problem, he solved it in such a way that after multiple reboots he managed to update the BIOS. So I did the same, for more than an hour I constantly rebooted the computer by the way taking out the ram, removing the battery, etc., finally the computer surprised, I installed the bios update (build date 06/29/2021) and from then on there was no problem until yesterday.
I went on a long vacation and upon my return I had the same problem again, but this time reboots didn't help/ This time the LEDs from CPU and RAM ( 1 and 2 ) lit up alternately. I restarted the bios for hours, in different configurations ( restart CMOS, change RAM, etc. ) it had no effect. I doubted , that it can be fixed however I accidentally managed to solve the problem .... Now instructions on how I think you can fix this problem:

1. remove the battery from the MOBO and do not insert it at all.
2. insert one RAM into the 3rd slot ( this is important!).
3. reboot the computer, it should turn itself on. then turn it off and put the battery back in the MOBO
4. once it starts up then install the MOBO update from the flash drive( in my case: build date 06/09/2022)
5) Insert the ram into the correct slots ( in my case 2 and 4) and see if it works
6. if the computer still does not boot on 2 RAMS, then put one of them in the 3rd slot again and reinstall the BIOS (without removing the battery from the MOBO).

In my case after step 5 I observed that the computer doesn't boot and only the CPU led is lit( like most on the forum after the failed update), but reinstalling the bios again (step 6) made the computer work normally and it already boots with 2 RAMs.
Generally these steps should help, in my opinion there is some problem with the RAM controller. After that when I accidentally booted the computer (doing steps 1 and 2) I continued to have trouble getting it to boot normally with the ram in its correct position ( in my case slot 2 and 4) . ).Below are some of my notes that I wrote down trying to solve the problem :
Ram in slot 3, Mobo without battery - works
Ram in 3 slot, battery in MOBO - works
Ram in 2 slot - started up but after some time ( more than a minute)
Ram in the 4th slot does not work
Ram again in 2 slot and does not work (WTF?)
RAM in the 3rd slot does not work.
As you can see, the computer worked very randomly. Only after reinstalling BIOS twice the computer works as it should, it turns on normally every time.
If my solution does not help then try putting RAM in another slot. ( According to me it will boot with only one RAM bone).

Write if this solution helped.

@msi maybe some gift for many hours of trial and error?

Thank you for the detailed procedure.
I am a few days away from finishing my build on a Z490 platform, I have an 8 GB USB 2.0 ready… and I've been reading about the drama since May. :D

If there are more confirmations this works, I'll probably try my luck.

That's some wild way to solve your problem. Nice. But i'm not yet convinced that it was the same problem that we discuss here. Because this problem here in the thread only happens directly after attempting to flash the BIOS, and i've not yet seen Microsoft push an MSI BIOS update via Windows Update. I have seen that done for notebooks before, but not for an MSI desktop board.
Of course, if someone had such a failed update on his MSI Z490, it's easy enough to try if this can solve it.

I think it came with v12, I updated to v16 for the 11th gen support when I upgraded from an i3-10100 to an i7-11700k after the 11th gen CPUs came out (so well over a year ago) but I might not be remembering the version it came with correctly.

PCIe 4.0 Loss with newest update 7C77v1C ?
I can't run my GPU and Nvme at PCIe 4.0 Speed anymore since I updated to the newest Bios...
Does anybone noticed the same problem?

Board: MSI Z490i Unidy
CPU: 11700F

Z490 Tomahawk user here. Still using 7C80v17 2021-02-04 Is it safe to switch to 7C80v1C - 2022-06-21?

Team T-Force (2x8GB) 3200 Mhz DDR4 Ram I want to try win11 and need to update bios.
Is there anyone who can use the latest bios?

Like everyone else, my PC stuck at CPU LED everytime i boot it up. I can solve it by resitting everything, CPU, RAM and graphic card. I think resitting only the CPU will work too but in my case, my Noctua NH-D15 forced me to remove everything before I am able to access the CPU. Hope this helps.

Mobo: Z490m gaming edge wifi

The important question though: Did it first happen right after a BIOS update? Because don't think that every occurance of "CPU LED" on Z490 has to do with the problem from here in the thread.
There are a number of different reasons for getting a CPU LED, most of them have nothing to do with this problem.

Yes, it happened right after BIOS update

Did you check for bent pins in the socket? Because i'm sure people tried to reseat all their components before and it didn't fix this problem for them, because their BIOS was actually corrupted.
As i said before, i'm a bit sceptical about just reseating stuff (RAM, CPU, cards) and somehow making it all work again, when the problem is a corrupted BIOS. Logically it doesn't make that much sense.
But of course i urge everyone to try such things and report if it can fix it for them. It would be nice to have some solution other than programming the BIOS chip again.

My Tomahawk, as I've just learned, came with v18 from the factory (I was quite lucky I have to admit), i.e. the first deadly update, but not the one for Win11.
HOWEVER: I only needed to enable TPM as well as another setting in the menu above it to be ready for Win 11. I haven't installed them yet so I cannot confirm the result but Updater says the PC is ready.

Thanks for the heads up. I checked it and turned on TPM now Updater says the PC is ready.

Date of failed flashing: 23/09/22
Affected board model: z490 gaming carbon wifi
CPU: i7-10700K
Flashing method used: dragon center
Attempted update to BIOS version: 7C73v17 or 7C73v18 (i don't remember) to 7C73v1C
Result: Stuck at EZ Debug LED "CPU" after update.
i opened a ticket with MSI and, after suggesting me to clear cmos, an action i have already try, they say the only solution is to ask for assistence/RMA, but they didn't do it directly in my country. so i just asked the reseller for rma and i'm now waiting to know if it will do it. i bought the mb about a year and half ago, so i'm not sure it will accept. i report my case for entry in the statistic, maybe it will help.
