Big improvement over the first game which I thought was mediocre. San Francisco is a great setting for an open world game, much more colourful and vibrant than Chicago. Not every open world game has to be colourful and vibrant but in this case it works really well. Chicago in the original didn?t do a good job of convincing me that it?s a real place, this game does. The first game took itself way too seriously so I appreciated the lighter tone this game took in contrast with a lot of meta humor and upbeat, interesting characters. The game feels like it has a personality to it. Both the main missions and side missions are much more creative and fun to play. Stealthing feels like a much more viable option now with the tools you?re given and the level design being more open in general with more ways to get to your objective and it feels more encouraged because of Marcus?s character. He doesn?t feel like a serial killer with no remorse like Aiden did for me. The parkour In this game is one of the biggest improvements, it feels so seamless and it?s really cool and fun seeing all the different moves Marcus can pull off. The parkour also increases the verticality of the gameplay which is one of the ways the level design opens up in the missions more because you can parkour and climb your way into certain places. I like how they changed up the hacking where it plays into the actual environments instead of it just being a static puzzle like it was in the first game. The story was ok, I was following it with some interest but it never hooked me and made want to play for longer sessions to see what would happen next, it felt disjointed overall. I think this is a really good game but I didn?t have as much fun as I?ve had with so many other open world games like the GTA series, Just Cause 2, Sleeping Dogs etc. Maybe it?s because the game keeps the overall general underwhelming mechanics of the first game and improves on them rather than completely redefining them or maybe because the game doesn?t have many ?wow? moments or amazing missions that stand out from the rest aside from the one shown at e3, the missions are just consistently good and they all have a very similar structure to them which can feel a little repetitive at times. Maybe playing as a hacker isn?t as engaging as playing as an undercover cop or a criminal or maybe the lack of a really gripping story. It?s probably all of those reasons combined why I think this is a good game, but not a great one.
