I'm Guessing its a variation of the 12th gen you have of that? if so its a 2.5inch SSD Mounting Bracket.

in that is 4 screws and the Bracket to mount the drive to it. 2 screws go into the SSD through the inner 2 holes on the top and the other 2 are to secure the drive in place into the Laptop.

I have just got a new laptop with one of these included. Are you supposed to open up the case to fit it?

It is a 2.5" SATA HDD bracket.
If you already have a HDD installed in the laptop, I think it has been installed as well. Just keep it in case upgrading the HDD in the future.
