Hi.
I create this post with two objectives:
1) I want to try to make my old gaming laptop for gaming again. Since almost a year ago the stuttering and other issues became the common thing with AAA games. Issue I didn't have before.
2) Centralize some information about the GT72 series so many ppl will find a solution easier.
I know repasting and maybe changing the thermal pads will help, but I also want to update hardware.
Here MSI told me the list of choice is really short (probably mostly made of the parts incorpored on the laptops shipped). that's why I would like to know what did you upgrade to your GT72 series laptops and how it worked.
a) Most common/cheap upgrade: SSD, HD and M.2. (NVME)
MSI told me the only compatible disks are:
1.SATA GEN3 AHCI,M.2-2280 B+M KEY,128GB,_,KINGSTON/RBU-SNS8152S3
2.SYS SSD,PCIe GEN3x4 NVMe,M.2-2280 M-KEY,128GB,_,SAMSUNG/MZVPV128HDGM

Did you try any other SSD or M.2 besides those listed? (I have the 970 Evo Plus in mind).

MSI told me the only compatible RAM are:
1.DDR4 SDRAM,16GB,1200(2400)MHz,KINGSTON/MSI24D4S7D8MB-16,MICRON
2.SODIMM,DDR4 SDRAM,8GB,1200(2400)MHz,KINGSTON/MSI24D4S7S8MB-8,MICRON
Crucial and some other RAM manufacturers list some RAM as 100% compatible with speeds of 3000mhz and lower CAS, so I'm pretty sure there are more options. What RAM did you use to upgrade?
( I have in mind the CORSAIR Vengeance Performance 16GB (2 x 8GB) 260-Pin DDR4 SO-DIMM DDR4 3000 (PC4 24000) Memory (Notebook Memory) Model CMSX16GX4M2A3000C16)
c) Not so common but still cheap upgrades: module wifi AC
I wonder if the gains are big.

d) Bios: Have you upgraded to a "non official" BIOS? How did it help to solve the issues or get better performances? (I've read in the forum some histories, mostly possitive).
e) XMP /Overclock / Underclock:
How did XMP work for you? Did you do it from the BIOS?
How did Overclock work for you?
How did underclock work for you? What software did you use?
f) the "hardest" to upgrade because of prices and limits: GPU
It seems no GT72 series laptop can go beyond a1080 GPU MXM. no RTX 20 Series is compatible.
