White /amber light

I have a GF75. I've read that the light by the power button is amber to indicate using the GPU, and that white means it not. Until now, my light was always amber except while powering up /down. It has now gone to white when in non - game use, though when I started a game it went back to amber (which makes sense) - is my computer trying to tell me that there is something wrong with my card or something else?

Thank you.

The power button shows which graphics is currently in use.
The power button lights amber when the discrete GPU is in use. Otherwise, it lightswhite when the integrated GPU is in use.

Yes, but it's behavior is changing. Before, the amber light was always on; it was only white during power up/down. Today it was solidly white while I was using my comp online; it would have stayed amber on all previous days. It did turn amber when I fired up a game, but again - it always stayed amber before. That's why I'm wondering if something is going wrong - the light is white at times it was previously amber.

I want that to happen to me ... it is good for battery life if it is changing that means the nvidia optimus is working nicely.

this happens time to time with Graphics Driver Updates. my GE66 Raider does that alot and usually later a update to Dragon Center or MSI Center fixes it.

it being locked in DGPU mode is actually a problem as its eating power all the time as its not reducing its power state by passing off to the IGPU

yeah its annoying. last time it did it to me it would only last 1h 12mins on a full battery charge to 96,219MAh of charge on my battery and had to leave it plugged in 24/7. seems to usually be either a update to one of 3 things that trigger it. 1: MSI Software updates and Bam now DGPU only, 2: intel Driver Update Bam now DGPU only or 3: Nvidia Driver Updates Bam now DGPU only

lets say it was Nvidia that did it see if there is a update for either MSI Software or Intel Driver
lets say it was Intel that did it see if there is a update for either MSI Software or Nvidia Driver

not 100% Guaranteed but usually one of them may work time to time

yup rn nvidia updated and now i have to wait for nearly a month to make it work..
do you have one of the MSI software's installed? if you do go into add/remove Programs on your PC type in MSI.SDK and uninstall it and start the MSI software by right clicking it as Administrator to see if it will force it to re-get the SDK Parts and see if that forces Optimus to Kick Back in?

My GP76 10UG does that too. The light will be orange even though nothing is running on the RTX3070. If I then go into Dragon Center and look around, not changing anything, and then exit, the light will turn white again. Why that happens is anybody's guess.

So - at the moment I should not think there's anything wrong? Nothing has updated - the change appeared on its own. Am I right in this - the light should be white when I'm not gaming because I don't need the DGPU and change to amber when I game because I do need it?

yes that is correct and is 100% normal

when your not doing something that is needing the accelerated performance of the Dedicated GPU it should switch to the CPU's GPU as it uses way less power to enhance battery life as if not its just making heat for no reason. when you fire up a game it should detect the heavy GPU load and pass it off to the Dedicated GPU to handle that task.

Well, my light is back to normal behavior - meaning how it was since I got it 4 months ago; it's always amber except when powering up and down (then it turns white). This is even if all I'm doing is browsing or doing school stuff - nothing graphically intensive. Now I feel like it should not be that way. Since it's always amber does that mean I'm way overusing my card - cutting down on it's life?

your not over using it if its amber as its not going to put much load on it as its just easy tasks unless your eg gaming or using it to video edit as they are heavy workloads. what your actaully doing when its orange is its just using more power and will limit battery life if disconnected from the Charger.

i had the same problem with the orange light coming on for no reason once and i must have read 1 million posts with no luck until i came across this one post that fixed it somewhat but sometimes it might go orange again and have to reboot was installing the nvidia sound drivers along with the nvidia graphics drivers even if there is no monitor with speakers to use the sound driver with and i have found that its not specific to msi laptops that have the orange light but other brands of laptops too
