X470 Gaming Plus, USB ports not working after Windows 10 update

Microsoft has been asking us to update because the old version will not be supported soon.

I did the update and now I lost 2 USB ports. I have no clue on how to get them started again.

1. I've tried uninstalling then reboot to have windows reinstall again.
2. Search to update to new drivers with no success.
3. Downloaded chipset drivers and installed with no success.

Adding picture of which USB Ports are dead...

Anyone got any ideas? :)

My understanding is that he updated from Windows 7 to Windows 10.

In this case, all the drivers, programs and settings from Win7 will be taken over into Win10. Therefore, Xarox, you have to look under "Programs & features" if there is any old driver listed for ASMedia or USB controllers, and uninstall it. Then, if necessary, install the new ASMedia driver again.

No, not from Windows 7 to Windows 10... I have Windows 10 and microsoft has gone out saying they are updating to a whole new version and has been making it available for people to download and install. Not the entire world at once, but, selected groups. When they are done, new groups, etc, etc... They will not be supporting the old version any longer...

Do you mean the 20H2 update? What was your installed version before?
If you skipped too many updates, you might need to reinstall Windows.
Do you see unidentified devices in device manager?

Yes, I currently have 20H2 installed... I don't remember the old version...

Ah, so you came from an old Win10 version, probably 1909. The support for that one would've ran out in two months.

Yes, i was just about to post about the device manager. If any device is shown with a question mark for example.

No questionmarks...

Posting a picture of it... Sorry it's partly in Swedish but I guess you can figure it out... :)

If you ask me, I have 3 Root Hubs with 2 ports in each, correct? And it cannot even locate the 3rd one which has the 2 ports that are dead? Or am I wrong?

OK, looks like the two ports are either disabled in BIOS or dead.
Else they should appear in device manager.

My head is spinning and thoughts are running wild...

Am I accusing Microsoft for something they are not guilty of? I updated the bios to get my sound working for the HDMI port to the TV. I updated windows Yesterday and it may be that I have not used the 2 hardware connected in those ports since I did my bios update...

Could the bios version automatically have those USB ports set to off? That would be a first...

This is from my device manager. Partly in German, but since Swedish is a North Germanic language, you'll figure it out too 😉

Note that i have both an ASMedia ASM1042 chip and an ASM3142 chip on my board, in addition to the ports coming from the Intel chipset and the NVIDIA graphics card.

In Programs & Features, i have the ASMedia USB Host Controller driver.

In the device manager, there's an option to show hidden devices. Check there for something from ASMedia.

It might also be a good idea to update your BIOS to the latest non-beta version.

Allright, so now we're getting somewhere... :)

The Hub that is greyed out is the 3rd one that is missing... How do I get it active again?

First off, i would update my BIOS to the latest non-beta, which is currently 7B79vAH. Which version did you update to previously?

Then i would enter the BIOS and look under USB devices if anything is switched off or something.

You have the X470 GAMING PLUS and not the X470 GAMING PLUS MAX. With the non-MAX models, they had serious size constraints in the BIOS:

So they had to remove some stuff to make room for CPU support. With the MAX models, they doubled the size of the BIOS chip to 32 MB:

There you still have all the features and nice BIOS looks. But not on your board. So they might had to change some settings too, if you came from an older BIOS. If your BIOS is older than 7B79vAH, update to that, then do a Clear CMOS.

The 7B79vAH is the one I got unfortunately... Maybe I have to step back in bios versions? :(

However, this does explain things about the graphic in the bios... They completely changed it from fancy graphical to boring grey/black... Most likely to save memory...

Yep, they removed all the fancy graphics to save valuable space. Ok, so you have the latest non-beta. Then i would do a Clear CMOS to reset all settings. Then enter the BIOS, set Win10 WHQL mode and boot mode to UEFI, and Secure Boot enabled and to Standard. Hopefully you have those options. You may also have to set your fan curves again etc.

Yep, have to set the memory profiles, fans and waterpump curves... I didn't touch boot options last time...

It will have to be for tomorrow though... Getting up in 4,5 hours for work...

Thanks alot for the help so far! :)
