on the x58 platinum motherboard what is the best way to attach a sound card ??

I see several available to buy and i notice that some say they connect to pci slot and some say pci-e slot.

Its been many many years since ive even bothered with soundcards as i usually just use the sound thats built into the motherboards, but because iam thinking about buying one now iam not at all sure which type to buy, should it be one for pci slot or one for pci-e slot ??

Ohh, and, i know my graphics card is plugged into a pci-e slot (geforce gtx285), so now iam wondering where the heck a pci-e soundcard would go.

Iam not looking to spend a lot of cash,  i know that even a cheap sound card is usually way better than onboard sound, so a cheap one will do me just fine if anyone wants to recommend some.

cheeers.

There's only 1 way to install and has not changed since ages. Buy the card, slot it into the correct slot, boot up the system, install the drivers, restart the system and you are done  ;-)).

I think your question is more towards whether the card you bought is a PCI-E or PCI based sound card, right?

If I'm right about it, actually it is very simple, just check the specs of the card and you'll be able to know whether the card is using PCI or PCI-E interface.

Disable the onboard sound if you're using a PCI or PCI-E sound card. No point in having it enabled ...

Then do as NovJoe said.

(at least that's right I'd do)

yes mate, sorry, that is what i meant, what is the best way as in like what slot pci-e or pci on the x58 platinum motherboard is it best to fit a sound card, you know like what is the most advantageous way, or another way to ask this question is what slot has the most advantage when connecting a soundcard when it comes to performance etc, thats what i mean, lol, sorry i couldnt explain what i meant better first time round.

Actually, both works the same. PCI or PCI-E can both deliver the same thing. All is down to personal preferences.

ok mate, ive ordered one, creative sounds pci express :)

can you/someone tell me, on my system coolmaster case, i have front internal plug in thingys for my sound, you know ? so that i can plug my earphones and stuff into the front of the computer rather than round the back, but now if i install this new seperate sound card, will those things still work ?? or do i have to unplug a wire from my motherboard and plug into the new soundcard for this to work ?? i hope someone can help me.

this is the new soundcard >>>  http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?CRE-XFIEE

and i obviously have an msi x58 platinum motherboard.

the case is listed in my signature there, its a coolmaster, same as this one >> http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?CM-HAF932#

thanks.

You can check with novatech on this. My Creative soundcard comes with a decoder so I connect via the decoder.

ermm, not sure what you mean mate, can you tell me more please ?

A assume you want to connect your front panel ports (mic & headphone). The card you linked has the "Intel standard" front panel connector (2 x 5 pin).

yes mate, cheers :), thats what i want to do, so where will i find this connector, will it be plugged into my motherboard just now ? if so, what is it i look for ? i cant actually see all the wires that connect away up to those front connectors as theres stuff in the way, do i just get hold of all the wires that are coming from the front panel connectors and trace them down to the motherboard, unplug it and plug into same socket but this time on the new soundcard ??

Have you actually connected the Intel HD cable to the motherboard before? (Check if anything is plugged into connection: JAUD1)

If you haven't, it's probably hidden away somewhere. Take off the side panel (the other one, not the one that allows you to see the motherboard) and have a look for a cable with the 2 connector blocks (one is black where the other is a mustard colour). This is the cable that needs to be connected to the header on the sound card (located near the rear of the card, away from the backplane). If it is connected, then simply unplug the cable from JAUD1 and reconnect it to the header on the sound card.

Don't forget to disable the HD Audio Controller in the BIOS (Integrated Peripherals>HD Audio Controller>DISABLE).

you see it there, the hd one ? is that "JAUD1" ?? is that the correct connector ?? and if so, do i just unplug that and plug it into soundcard, yea ? or is it also another connector too, you mention a black one too.
