X58M Ethernet Not Working

Hello-

My brother just bought an X58M board. We installed his old Windows XP (32-bit) to tide him over until he can upgrade. However, the hardwired internet connection is not working. It seems like the drivers won't install. When we use the disk that came with, it gives the error "The realtek ethernet controller was not found. if Deep Sleep mode is enabled, please plug the cable". I Googled around a bit and it seems this problem is usually solved by unplugging the ram for a minute or changing the CMOS jumper. There are no Network Adapters in the Device Manager.

Please advise.

Is onboard LAN option enabled in the BIOS?

We have tried toggling the onboard LAN controller to no effect. I'm sorry if I can't provide complete spec details. I live about 200 miles from my brother (who has the machine) and I've been helping him get it running on the phone (because TigerDirect was late in delivery and missed my last trip home). Here is all the information I can get right now (he's in bed, this is just the info I have).

Core i7 - 920  XP Home (32-bit)
MSI MS-7593 Mainboard
Video card is some Radeon, unsure of the model.
Ram is 3x2Gb sticks, unsure of the brand

Try setting the power scheme to "Always On" to see if that does anything.  If not, then the onboard LAN might be defective... which your bro might have to RMA.

Also, I should mention that the left LED on the RJ-45 jack is flashing, indicating a link.

We have tried the power scheme to "always on". we have also tried setting the "wake up by" to OS mode with no luck :(

Any other ideas?

Try to install the latest intel.inf driver first before installation of the Ethernet controller.

Thanks for the suggestion! I pointed him towards the intel utility for doing that. Is there anything else you can think of?

Currently, I can think of this mainly causing the issue since the message "Device cannot be found" is usually pointing to OS unable to recognise the hardware category of the device controller. This is either cause by a corrupted OS, based mainboard driver not installed (intel.inf in this case), hardware chip faulty or LAN not enabled in BIOS.

Well, we reinstalled WinXP. We installed the intel.inf. Barring the hardware being bad, what settings in BIOS should we look at? We have tried toggling the Integrated Peripherals->Onboard LAN Controller and Integrated Peripherals ->LAN Option ROM.

In your Integrated Peripherals> Onboard LAN Controller > Set to 'Enabled'.

In your Integrated Peripherals> LAN Option ROM > Set to 'Disabled'.

Finally got it working. We managed to get a wireless adapter for our use, and let windows fix itself with Windows Update. It installed some version of the needed driver, and then allowed us to update to the one that wouldn't install previously.
