I can’t believe I stumbled upon this thread! I am having the exact same problem as you sir. I mean exact. I have looked online multiple times and finally this came up. I have done most of the troubleshooting steps already mentioned above. I’ll def try the ones I haven’t but I would love to help get to bottom of this! I also just received my board back from RMA, it fried after upgrading from 7700x to 7800x3d. I was hopeful the issues were related, and mentioned this thoroughly upon sending my board to MSI. They replaced the entire cpu socket, but unfortunately I’m still having the same issue. c5, Ab, etc. The only difference in your errors compared to mine I noticed: I am not able to boot with 2 ram sticks. Prior to RMA the only way it would boot was with (1) ram stick in slot #4 (weird af). Now it will boot with slot #2 only. I’ve tried (3) diff sets of ddr5 and same issue with all. I bought a set of 32x2 5600 so at least I can get 32gb running 1 measly stick. So thankful this is a current post and the folks here seem super helpful and knowledgeable. I’ll post more specifics on my issue and maybe by having another unit to test theories with we can figure this thing out!

What is your ram model? I believe the Ripjaws line is XMP only. Not necessary cause problem though.
First, make sure your ram is Hynix based kits. In cpu-z, it should tell you the manufacture.

I have the above DDR5 ram available. I currently have just 1 white stick in my main build (the carbon with the issues). I have the neo sticks in my 2nd computer (b650/7700x) right now. I can easily switch them up this afternoon if the neo would be more appropriate. I'm having the same issues with both sets, regardless of XMP/EXPO being enabled. Only running the ripjaws due to size/stick being limited to booting with 1.

Edit - Will check cpu-z this afternoon and update for Hynix unless you can tell from the info above!

Yes, they are all Hynix dies (only Hynix dies can do that CAS latency). Both are good kits, and should run on the AM5 just fine.
Since you have 2 rigs, did you try this board with your 7700x (or whatever cpu from the working rig)? I just want to rule out CPU issue.

Unfortunately I was having the same issue before the upgrade :/ Actually would only boot with (1) of the neo ram sticks in slot #4. On the 7700x I was stuck on the same Ab/c5 crap and I read on a similar issue (def not near as similar as this) to try one stick in slot #4. I laughed at first, but was shocked when it actually booted. Same issue when I swapped to the new 7800x3d. After a couple days it quit booting with any ram in any slots (tried the 2 kits shown above as well as a friends ddr5). Striped it down and sent to MSI for RMA. When I removed the cpu I noticed a spot that looked like the pins were bend or maybe even burnt. I received the board back a couple weeks ago and when I got around to re-assembling it would only boot with (1) stick, now in slot #2 rather than #4. Using both slots #2 and #4 leads back to the c5/Ab code. No telling how many times I have re-booted, unpluged, cleared cmos, flashed bios, reinstalled windows, etc. There are a few misc. things you guys mentioned above that I want to double check this afternoon in my BIOS and will report back!

One of my buddies recently got into PC gaming and bought all the same components as me (diff case/fans only). I assembled his for him and he has never had a hiccup. When the 7800x3d launched we both got it and he installed his himself (his first component swap on his own) and has never had an issue. Just frustrating to keep having futile troubleshooting attempts!

I am just guessing here, if you have not already done so.
1. Check socket, look for bent pins.
2. Loose the cooler, too much mounting pressure would also cause this.
3. Pull out the board, test the board on the non-conductive table. (warning, antistatic bags are conductive, don't use)

I just got the board back from RMA earlier this month and it looks as they replaced the entire cpu socket area of the motherboard. I'll try to loosen up the cooler a bit more and see what happens!

Very strange. It does seem like you have it worse though. My PC boots fine if I press the rest button while it is stuck on the AB code. It sounds like yours doesn't want to boot all?

Also this afternoon, it booted for the first time ever, the first time lol. I didn't change a thing as I forgot to revert to default settings last night. :/

I tried another troubleshooting session last night, to no avail. I'm about to just splurge on a new board. I really was hoping MSI would repair it back to factory condition upon RMA, I would have paid them additional $ to make repairs if necessary.

Last night troubleshoot (unsuccessful)
Reset cmos manually with screwdriver.
Waited ~20 min.
Flashed BIOS with 7D70v172(Beta version)
Wouldnt boot with 2 sticks of ram
Finally got it to boot with 1 stick of ram, but couldnt even get into bios to tinker.
Downloaded samsung magician and made sure firmware was up to date on SSD (it already was).
Tried to get to BIOS by mashing delete on restart - no luck
Tried to get to BIOS by holding shift key while restarting - no luck
Tried to get to BIOS by selecting advanced startup options through windows - no luck
It's like it doesnt even want to restart properly. So frustrating.
Finally got it to boot back to windows with (1) stick of ram - no EXPO/XMP enabled.
Played on it for about an hour then called it a night.

Now the only question is do I get the Carbon again, or go all out with an Ace or Godlike? I'm a bit frustrated with MSI atm, but don't really want to go with another brand.

Thank you guys for the tips and support, but I'm afraid this is a lost cause. :(

Up to you, but if it was me I'd send it back again. The board is still under warranty, they must fix it.

MSI should have tested your board before they sent you back, right?
Also, the CPU is directly connected to the ram slots through motherboard traces. There is no active components in between. There is nothing that could really go wrong.
I tend to believe it is not the board issue.

Couple more ideas.
1. Test your ram on another AM5 system, make sure they actually work with Ryzen 7000. Not all rams work with Ryzen 7000 even they are on the QVL list.
2. Test your cpu on another AM5 system.
3. Swap PSU.

PS: I have 2 MSI x670e Carbon boards. They were all open box items when I purchased them. They all turned out fine.

Thank you for the suggestions! I never thought about it being the PSU, good idea!

1. I'm confident the (2) sets of ram I have are working fine. I have used both kits in my b650 build with no issues. I even tried them both on a friends b650 and it booted fine with both sticks.

2. I haven't tried to test the 7800x3d on my b650 board yet, so this is definitely worth trying to help identify the issue. When I sent my carbon back for RMA, I just boxed the x3d rather than swap in/out with the 7700x. Was also concerned I would ruin another board with the uncertainty at the time over the x3d issues. I'm assuming I should clear cmos and flash bios on each board when I swap? Will be 7700x for 7800x3d. Just want to verify this is best practice when swapping cpus!

3. I plan to try this idea first! I have a corsair 850w I can swap with my corsair 1000w pretty easily. If this is what has been going on the whole time I'm going to feel like a fool! But I will be happy as well because it's the easiest fix!

Thank you for the encouragement, I've been price-shopping motherboards today and they def haven't gotten cheaper since launch!

Swapped the PSUs and same issue going with 2 ram sticks. Debug code goes very quickly from 15 then immediately to C5. :(

removed ram stick from slot #4 and booted 1st try 🫤

BIOS 1.74 ..... EXPO hangs at a restart unless total power down restart and PCIE 3 not working

BIOS 1.20 Everything works fine. Just don't get the latest AGESA updates.

BIOS 1.74 If I restart from Windows mine gets stuck on Ab and will not move with EXPO ON ,the only way around it is to shut the system down (total power down power supply off) then restart or leave EXPO off and it will boot with BIOS 1.50, 1.60 or 1.74, Now if I install the original BIOS 1.20 I never have any issue.

Let me guess. Your ram is Samsung based.

Yes it is Samsung based but APPROVED by MSI for my board, I guess that should not matter.

Yes, it is only validated with AGESA 1.0.0.2 1.0.0.3 . Since then, it's never worked properly on any recent AGESA.
I own the g.skill 5600 version, also Samsung dies. I gave up, bought some Hynix based kits later on.

Thanks for the info. This is sad to spend all this money and now I cannot return anything and need to spend more. Starting to sound like a product was released before it was ready and I think it's AMD's fault not MSI.

Ture, I tried the kit with one ASUS board, same issue.
I RMAed the kit, and got the replacement 5 month ago. The 2nd kit had the same issue.

To mitigate the boot issue. You can disable Memory Context Restore in the bios. The default value is AUTO. Manually set it Disabled.
Although it does not fix the issue completely, it reduces the chance that it get stuck at reboot.

Should I be running the latest BIOS rather than 1.20 since I hear there is chance of overvolting the CPU with BIOS 1.20. I'm not overclocking the CPU though. I just ordered
F5-6000J3238F16GX2-TZ5NR (hynix M) memory it will be here tomorrow.
