x670e motherboard causing massive stuttering

Hi! I have a problem with my motherboard. So, i have my GPU in the MOBO top PCIe slot, and randomly on restart or boot up, my GPU will run at PCIe x16 1.1 or 2.0 instead of x16 4.0, and this causes stuttering to the point of the system being unusable, and the only way to fix this is restarting the computer until my MOBO decides to let the GPU run on x16 4.0. I have tried forcing the PCI-E1 slot to only use gen4 (in BIOS settings) but the problem still occurs. On the other hand, if i force it to run only on gen3, then all is fine and it never changes to any other gen on restart. What can be the cause of this problem and how can i fix it? I've been struggling with this for a month now and i've run out of ideas. I even replaced my GPU once thinking that was the issue, before realizing it was from the PCIe.

Specs:
MOBO: MSI x670e gaming plus wifi
GPU: Gigabyte 4080 super gaming oc
CPU: Ryzen 7 7800x3D
SSD: Lexar M.2 PCI 4.0
RAM: 2x16GB Patriot Viper 6000 series

Using latest BIOS version (7E16v19), i've tried other versions as well but no change..

Can anyone help?

If it's not even an NVMe issue, it seems like you've tried almost everything (I've seen bad NVMe drives cause problems that seem unrelated). The only thing left is to send the motherboard for RMA. I hope the problem gets fixed.
Yeah i just tested my gpu, PSU and RAM on another system running an AM4 MOBO and everything works fine. So the issue is definitely my MOBO or my CPU, the only 2 things i can't test on another system. I will buy another motherboard and see if that is the issue. Unfortunately i can't RMA this current one cause the store i bought it from has very big problems with the warranty service, so i would rather just buy a new one tbh, instead of wasting my time with them. The only thing i'm hoping now is that it's not the CPU's fault, cause that cost almost 3x the price of the MOBO.

Do you have another CPU to try? or another graphics card to put in the motherboard? This could help you narrow that down as well.
You should still RMA the board to MSI directly, even if you buy a different board. No sense in letting an item still under warranty go bad.

I also have A24 on my x870 tomahawk and it works ok... Only problem i have is that EXPO doesnt work right now :S
Yeah, A24 on the tomahawk is the January BIOS. A24 on the Carbon was just released into beta a couple of days ago. It is SIGNIFICANTLY more stable on boot than the 23 and I'm now able to run PBO and manual timings on my RAM successfully. Don't think I'll be going back to XMP/EXPO, they don't just "work out of the box" well anymore with the IMCs being so varied from CPU to CPU.
Hopefully they'll release a new BIOS for you that at least gets you the speed your RAM is specced for, even if you have to use manual timings. Have you checked their download page for beta BIOSes for your board?

I do not have another CPU. I have tried different GPU's on this MOBO tho, i have tried a 3070 and a 1060, and there were no problems with either of them, and i've tried 2 different 4080 supers and with both of them the issue was present. I have absolutely no clue why the problem appears only using a 4080 super or a 40xx gen card i suppose.

There was an issue with 3080's needing a BIOS update to match a UEFI update that would only appear when someone upgraded the motherboard. Maybe it's something along those lines?

Yeah, they rarely do. However, the two I'm thinking of were the UEFI BIOS and the DisplayID updates released directly from nVidia. But those were different problems.
Have you tried re-flashing the motherboard BIOS and doing a complete clear/load defaults? Sometimes old junk gets stuck in there... since it actually works normally at PCIe3 when you set that in the BIOS I doubt it's the hardware itself.

I have tried that multiple times, yep. Different BIOS versions as well. And also, since my original post, i have further tested the system with PCIe gen3 forced in BIOs and the problem occurs even then, it's just less often for some reason. (maybe like 33% less compared to when set to gen4 or auto)

How did you go? Did a new board fix it? I have a x870 Tomahawk and when it returns from sleep sometimes, or sometimes when I restart the machine comes on with a gen 2 x 16 PCIe speed. Have to restart sometimes even twice to get it to eventually be gen 5 x 16. This is also my second x870 board the first one wouldn't even post it was DoA. MSI says they can't replicate issue and are wiping hands of it.

i got exactly the same problem. bought my pc in 7.2024 and from delivery this happend. it drove me nuts. ive send my pc 2xtimes for rma last was a month ago. and now i just runned over that post here. horray good to know that it is not my fault. ive tried diffrent bios versions 15x times and more clean installs and any kind of shice possible. but nothing helped. a month ago i rma it again but they found nothing. what i also have along is 153 nvlddmkm along. my screen goes black and anything crashes. but after reading your post i canceld the order and step back from my order ( in germany you can do that for a year if 2 rmas dont work).

Hello,

I think I have the same issue.
CPU: 9800x3d, MB: x670e Gaming plus wifi, GPU: 5080 zotac solid OC.
After long researches on this forum, this bug seemed to be caused by the pcie version being stuck at lower version than 5.0. For me the stutter/freeze/lag happen only when it's stuck at version 1.1 and 2.0 but sometimes the pcie version can be stuck at 3.0 or 4.0. It's totaly random when you start your PC, restarting can resolve the issue.

Tell me if i'm wrong but nobody found a solution to this issue, even tweaking the bios doesn't help. Setting the pcie to only 4.0 don't work, auto don't work etc. etc.

So for me it's a MSI motherboard only issue, this issue happen to x670E and x870e MSI MB, as other users said, changing the brand of your motherboard resolve completely the issue.

Does somebody know if MSI is currently working on this issue? I don't want to wait for month fighting with my PC everytime I start it.

The last version of bios 7E16v1A with the "AGESA PI-1.2.0.3a Patch A released" didn't solve the issue. There is a beta version of the bios with AGESA PI-1.2.0.3c released. maybe it will solve the issue.

Latest patch c BIOS doesn’t fix for me. MSI giving me the run around telling me it could be bad CPU or GPU, telling me to go to computer shop and check them etc.

I hope the next bios update with the new version of AGESA will fix the issue. We all know here that the issue is not on the cpu/GPU side.

I will contact MSI to have a MB replacement, I can't bear much more with this issue.

Do you guys know which MB is affected by this issue? It seemed to be x670e and x870e.

Please let me know if replacing motherboard fixes issue. I am having with X870 Tomahawk Wifi

I am having a MSI x670e Gaming Mainboard with 9800X3D CPU and 9070XT GPU currently. My GPU runs only at PCIe 4.0, irrespective of whether I am choosing "auto" or "Gen 5" in the BIOS. But at least it works with both settings. I also had an RTX 5080, and the system start stuttering extremly and my PC restarted within 1-2 minutes after I downloaded the NVIDIA drivers. At that time I had chosen "auto" as PCIe setting in the BIOS. I also tested everything beside changing the CPU or mainboard. I am thinking about buying a mainboard from another brand and test if my system runs on PCIe 5.0 but I have to check first what the hell I am doing with my MSI mainboard.

I'm exactly at the same place as you... That's so infuriating. Someone on Reddit told me he has reached MSI support but they blame the GPU... But everyone here know that's not the case. Could you please inform us if the MB change solve the issue?

I will contact MSI too.

Did you try taking videos of the problem? They definitely need to replace your motherboard.

For my case, I bought the pieces one by one on different sites so I'm [***CENSORED***] ahah
