Hello!

Just got my xpower last week and have been very happy with the board. But after I got my intel ssd x25m g2 80G yesterday and run disk speed test (CrystalDiskMark, HDTune) on it, the scores are much lower than expected, even when I tried all 6 ICH10R SATA ports. Surprisingly the speed went back normal if I plug it to Marvell SATA3 instead of ICH10R SATA ports.

-Windows 7
-Big Bang Xpower (bios v1.2)
-i7 930 (C1E disabled, no overclock)
-6G ram
-GTX460
-Intel X25M G2 80G SSD

CrystalDiskMark score (Seq Read)
My score: 190MB/s (ICH10R+IDE mode)
My score: 210MB/s (ICH10R+AHCI mode)
My score: 254MB/s (Marvell SATA3+AHCI mode)

As you can see the scores with intel ports are about 20% lower than the normal range (240-250MB/s). Tried drivers on MSI webpage and the official intel page as well. No luck.... Any hints on this?

Thanks mate!

Hi,
Thanks for the tip on getting higher transfer rates with the ports and parameters you listed. I may try them and see if I get a 20% increase too.

The following are the screenshots that I captured when connected at ICH10R and Marvell.

ICH10R:

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Marvell:

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

As you can see marvell outperforms ich10r at sequential read, 512k read, 4k read. But at ich10r it did better at 4k write and 4k QD32 read.
If for normal use as an OS disk, which port should i connect to?

Some more updates... Found out that the Green Power of the IOH would worsen the SSD transfer speed at ICH10R.

ICH10R (All green power on)

ICH10R (Green power IOH off)

See the improvement in average transfer rate (162MB/s vs 205MB/s) . The chart was very spiky but now its much more stable although the throughput still much well below the one tested in other boards.

Tried to see if there's effect in Marvell SATAIII... unfortunately no...

Marvell (All green power on)

Marvell (Green power IOH off)

But when compared with ich10r, surprisingly the ich10r outperforms the marvell in average transfer rate, access time and burst rate.

Maybe I'll still stick to ICH10R for my SSD by now. Hope the MSI staff could fix if there's bugs in the Green Power function, esp IOH, and the subpar ssd transfer speed.  :worship: Thanks for reading!
