Z590 pro goes straight to bios on power up.

Hi,
I just cloned my C: drive to a newer bigger 980 M.2 and the system fails to boot - goes straight into UEFI on power up - I have checked that the system is on the disc with a Windows 10 repair tool - all seems fine - the m.2 is listed in the bios, correctly - in slot 1. I have installed the latest bios for the motherboard, now I'm stuck...

The BIOS is probably in the so-called UEFI mode now, which requires the boot drive to have a so-called GPT. But with your old configuration, the BIOS was probably in CSM/Legacy mode, which, when installing Windows like that, prepares the boot drive to have an MBR instead of a GPT. So you'd have to do a "MBR to GPT conversion" for the boot drive, it's a short procedure, then the new BIOS in UEFI mode can boot from it. The full explanation is here. Check the EZ Debug LEDs, they will be on BOOT. Once you did the conversion, it should go past BOOT and boot your Windows again.

Hi, thanks for your reply, but my system was set up as UEFI before I put the new M.2 in... The only difference is the new BIOS; I'm wondering if there could be a BIOS setting that needs to changed for M.2?

Were you using an M.2 drive (in the Z590) before this bigger one? The reason I ask is you mention slot 1, that slot is for use with 11th generation CPU only. If you have 10th generation CPU then M.2 needs to be in a different slot (from the chipset). If you have 11th generation CPU and still having trouble, I suppose there could be situation like the bent pins in CPU socket that cause unexplained failures, but first it probably makes sense to ask if you've flashed most recent BIOS - I see release notes for v18 includes "Improve PCIE storage compatibility."

Hi thanks and yes I just cloned a 970 half Tb onto a 980 1Tb - it is an 11th Gen CPU, i7-11700K, not been out of the socket. Current Bios is E7D09iMS.170 - I check for a later one.

If the BIOS update to 1.8 (with that release note I mentioned) doesn't help, please look for forum guideline about how you should include more details about your hardware. For example someone might wonder if you have something like graphics card using PCIe lanes. The 970 was PCIe 3.0 but if your 980 is Pro (rather than just 980) then it would be PCIe 4.0. Then my next suggestion would be more of a troubleshooting/workaround technique, and that would be try moving to a different M.2 socket (which would use the chipset's PCIe lanes and would only work at PCIe 3.0 speed). Or perhaps even trying to move any PCIe card from one slot to the other (first one uses lanes from CPU which can be PCIe 4.0 while other one uses PCIe 3.0 lanes from chipset).

I have taken out the graphics card, there is a sound card installed in one of the lower slots, other than that its got 32Gb of memory. I'm next going to unplug the other hard drives, as it still wont boot...

The 'BBS Priority' options for Disc and USB do not appear in the equivalent page in my bios.

Can you make some screenshots so i can see what we're dealing with? Press F12 to make a BMP screenshot to a FAT32 drive, then convert to PNG or JPG for size and upload here.

Hi, with the USB installed, to grab the screen shot, I now get a USB option at the bottom of the boot screen - I took one screen shot and it went to the USB, but now I don't seem to be able to take any more.

So it appears that the Windows Boot Manager is not to be found for the BIOS. Which cloning tool did you use?

Anyway, try the following. Boot from a Win10 installation USB stick that's been created via the Media Creation Tool. At the installation screen, choose "Repair the computer", then choose "Troubleshoot" > "Advanced Options" > "Command Prompt". Run diskpart and then type list disk. Check if it lists the SSD and if there is an asterisk below "GPT".
Then we'll see how to continue. Probably needs some command line kung-fu to get it properly registered with the BIOS.

I used Samsung Data Migration, as I have before. Anyway, No, the 980 does not have an asterix in the GPT column. I put the 970 back in and it shows the exact same results.
