Z77A-GD80 Test With An Ivy CPU & RAM Running 2666 Possible?

The need for speed! Is it worth it? :think: Let's do a little testing to find out.

Corsair recently released their CMS16GX3M4A2666C11 4X4GB 16GB 2666 Dominator Platinum RAM kit, so thought it would be fun to see how it worked in the Z77 GD80. To reach 2400 on 1.642v's with all 16GB didn't take much effort as shown here;

2666 with 16GB was another story. Tried an endless number of timing scenarios without any success. Removing two sticks to an 8GB configuration was very easy to get working as this screenshot reveals;

Tried all kinds of ways to see if the system would falter running at this RAM speed. No problem at all! Timings and DRAM V. were set to the exact specifications on the RAM labels. The 2666 speed did require that I raise the DRAM V. on step. It reads steady at 1.651v's at the V-Checkpoint by DMM.

Summary: Note that the difference between 16GB at 2400 and 8GB at 2666 in 7-Zip is rather small. The RAM runs as advertised, the MSI mainboard can obviously handle these speeds, but the CPU IMC, IMHO, can't handle this speed when using 16GB and all the DIMM's filled. As with any test, results may vary greatly on another similar system. :-))


 
Forgot to include the Unigine Heaven results. :bonk: At 2400 with 16GB, the FPS was 159.5, Scores: 4018. 2666 with the 8GB resulted in a small increase, FPS 161.0 and Scores: 4057.

Just tried the newly released Platinum 2X4GB 2800 kit on this system. How does this grab y'all!

Even CPU-Z's SPD Tab X.M.P. reading can't even keep up with it! :lol_anim:

Couldn't tell you! None of the benchmark utilities I have will work at this level! :lol_anim: It was necessary to lower the CPU speed from 45X to 44X as the IMC just can't really handle this RAM speed at 45X. I seriously doubt it is much more significant than 2133 RAM speed though. With the other 2666 kit, I can keep the CPU speed at 45X. 7-Zip benchmark only shows less than 100 MIPS difference between 2133 and 2400, and about the same for 2400 to 2666. Not that significant.

The people that insist on fast RAM IMO are in many ways fooling themselves. CPU speed is the key to any meaningful performance gains. Even that is limited, as the CPU's seem to peak out around 44X - 47X. After that, all I often see is a lot of extra heat being generated along with high voltages being required for a very minimal performance boost.

With all the current Core i7 processors on the market, above DDR3-1866 the performances boost is close to zero.
Extra heat, stability issues and shorter lifetime is all you get.

Yup  :yes: but I saw in 3DMark 2011 at Physic score for CPU stressing, the higher RAM frequency especially 2400 - 2600MHz makes this score goes higher than 2133MHz. But in real life application like gaming is not much different  :-P) perhaps DDR4 would bring something new  ;D

Tests have shown that 2133-2400 seems to be the sweet spot for ivy. Over that seems to offer diminishing results. Most imc's have a hard time keeping up after 2400 as well
 
Mine runs fine at 2133, 2400, 2600 w/ the follow timings;
2133: 9-10-10-23
2400: 10-11-11-30 1t
2600: 11-12-12-30 1t
Dramv for all was 1.55
I suspect with some overvoltage I could get it high but why? I run it at 2400 for everyday.
The ram is Corsair Dominator Platinum 2133 cl:9

Wow nice result Xmad  :biggthumbsup: is 1.55Volt your stock RAM voltage? or is it 1.50 Volt at stock? At the same volt that RAM can run well from stock to 2600MHz that is just great  :worship: I guess this Platinum Dominator is exellent RAM  :yes:
