MSI P965 Neo onboard Realtek HD audio has no sound
« on: 14-November-06, 20:45:04 »

I just bought a new MSO P965 neo-f motherboard with the built-in 7-1 Realtek HD audio and I have no sound.

Windows detects it and I have installed the latest realtek driver (v1.49). Everything looks fine, but there is no sound, as if its all muted.

I have tried different speakers, but no result.

Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

At witch output connector you are plugging the speakers? You don't have any sounds even when windows loads,or when using certain applications?

I have absolutely no sound. I have tried all connectors. I have even tried putting the motherboard in a different chassis that has front-plug-in. No results :(

First of all I hope that onboard audio is enabled in BIOS-Integrated Peripherals. Then you are only using the onboard audio(not any additional soundcard). If so,connect the output cable in the green connector, because that is the main audio output(stereo mode),no mater how your sound card is set to (4.1,5.1,...). If you still don't get the sound, the problem should be within the drivers. I don't know what version of Windows you are using, but upgrade it to SP2. Also, install the latest directX.
After that uninstall the current driver-reboot-install the drivers that were supplied with your MB.

Do you have the realtek console thingy installed ?

It allows for 'hot-routing' of audio IO...
Perhaps without this application there is no routing at all.

No, I don't have any jumpers on it. Is it suppose to be standard or supplied with the motherboard? And where do I put jumpers?

Uninstall everything, including any Audio filters and codecs that you can find in your sound device detection. Once done, restart the system and install the latest drivers available and see if you still encounter the same problem.

Under Volume Control-Master volume control-Advanced control, check if "Digital output only' is selected. If so,disable this option.

In the Realtek control panel go to "Audio I/O".  Are any of the boxes a brighter white than the others?  You should have 2 speakers next to the green one, try clicking there.

If you can click on any of them to get a pop up box that lets you choose what "output" it is then select it for "Line Out" and plug your speakers in there.

Also, make sure under the "Tool" icon that "Enable auto popup dialog" is check marked so it gives you the option to select what you have plugged in.

It has nothing to do with the board.  I have a K9A Platinum and the Realtek High Definition Audio Chipset.

You will notice here the various outputs.

The one that says "Digital" is the SPDIF.

It shouldn't matter if it is enabled or not, but you can try turning it off.

So it isn't showing anything plugged in at all?  That does seem to be a problem, do you have another set of speakers you can try and what kind of speakers are you using?

Thank you.

I do not have the digital option. I do have th back panel and front panel option and nothing is white, like it is with you speakers on the back panel.

I have tried:

Philips http://www.amazon.co.uk/Philips-MMS231-High-Performance-Speakers/dp/B00066WHPO
Labtec http://www.amazon.co.uk/Labtec-Pulse-420-Speakers-2-1/dp/B00006AFW0

Alls 3 speakers work fine on another machine.

What's funny is the drivers I took the screenshot from above are those drivers from the Realtek site.  I had no drivers on my system and a fresh install.  After installing those drivers they came up with the MSI logo which makes me believe MSI has made customizations to the chips at least.

On the K9A Platinum these drivers work correctly, but there is a possiblity MSI has done further customization to the drivers to work on your specific board.

No just a fresh install of the drivers. Windows XP is fresh, as it has been installed 5 days ago.

My system is running on Windows XP SP2

MSI P965 Neo-F
Intel core 2 E6600 cpu
1GB PC-5300 DDR2
2X300GB IDE 16mb 133
1XDVD RW
1XDVD player
Nvidia 7300GB 256MB
Wifi card PCI
2x IDE using PCI
1394 PCI card

I also have a Creative Audigy SE PCI soundcard, but I am all out of PCI slots. I don't understand why motherboards only support 2 or 3 PCI slots.

Everything is new except the Harddisks, DVD RW, DVD player and the Creative Audigy SE soundcard

If it was SP2 it should be affecting my system also since I have the same audio.  It's a pretty standard chip used by MSI.

I'm betting your having an IRQ conflict or a conflict somewhere in regards to resources.  Was the sound working previously?

Can you pull say the 1394 card and the 2xIDE card and see what happens?

Previously I asked you if you have another soundcard connected to some of the PCI slots! You said that you are using only the onboard audio. But if I understand correctly, you have an additional PCI soundcard. You have to decide witch one you are going to use,and then disable the other one .If you have both installed on your PC you'll have a hardware conflict(or at least set the one that you are using as Windows default).
As for the Windows XP SP2,there is no conflict between the audio device and the OS.I have already tried the same drivers on Windows XP SP2,and worked perfectly. But,since I'm using my Creative Audigy ZS, I have disabled the onboard audio in BIOS.

The other soundcard is in a box, not connected to the motherboard, due to a lack of PCI slots. I really do no understand the choice of MSI to only use 3. I personally would have needed atleased 5 slots, but could not find any (MSI) bord with 5.

It comes down to a change in technology that is happening, Me27.  6 or 7 years ago you would have found most motherboards with 3 PCI and 2 or 3 ISA slots.  Then we went to 5 or 6 PCI when ISA pretty well faded.  Over Time AGP came out and took the place of one of these PCI slots since you no longer needed one for graphics.

Now we have PCI Express for the graphics, but the technology for PCI-E has also started to be implemented for many components that were previously PCI only.  So now we are changing technology again and you have 3 PCI and 2 or 3 available PCI-E slots.

As time goes on you will probably start to see more and more boards that contain more PCI-E slots and less PCI until standard PCI fades and the next technology comes along.

It's part of changes to technology.

After 7 years of MSI motherboard. This is going to be my last!

They don't help over the phone
They don't respond to emails

Now I just put in my soundcard and everytime I want to use my 1394 port I just switch the PCI cards!

I don't think any other boards will gives you 5 PCI slots, you'll have to go back to the last 2 generations of the boards to get that setup.

My whole system is a fresh OS.

I am looking for a motherboard that works, so I don't need to use one of the current PCI slots for a soundcard. And what I am looking for is a company that returns emails, support forms and phone calls.

Please don't get me wrong. I am happy with how this community helps each other and happy that people in this forum take time to help others. I am thankful for that.

Do you happened to have a Realtek Sound Manager in Control Panel?

If you do, go into the application under SPDIF/Output tab and check if the sound output has been set to Digital and Analog output? If it is, try setting to Analog output only and see how it goes.

I think you just RMA the board... if I were you, I'd have enough of it and return the board. Good luck!

It has been 2 years. MSI says there is nothing wrong with the MB.

I am now using software 5.10.0.5605 - ACL883 codec
