MS 7181 Ver 2.0 fan speed
« on: 30-April-07, 11:27:12 »

My system is:-

MS 7181 Ver 2.0 board
2400 MHZ AMD Pentium 4
960 MB memory 512 x 2
Maxtor 203GIG 2B200P0 hard drive

The pc is rarely used for much more than surfing, email and odd letters.

I want it to run as quiet as possible.

So I have set the BIOS to Smart CPU fan 50c and Tolerance to 5

I take this means that the CPU fan will speed up when the CPU temp. reaches 45c?

This is what software called Belarc Advisor calls my processor:-

"2400 megahertz AMD Pentium 4"

Is a copy paste from the Belarc spec.sheet

AMD pentium 4?? lol.

seems Belarc don't know what they are talking about

if it is amd @2.4Ghz , you've got a little bit more juice than you need for your emails anyway

that's the way i understand the smart fan options. I used to have it set at 50c tolerance 1. You'll probably find that you rarely get anywhere near 50c if you're just surfing / emailing, and it should stay fairly quiet

Yes but as I said sometimes, all though rare, it runs other more CPU intensive software like Photoshop Elements 3.

So most of the time it will sit quietly in the corner.

I recently replaced a broken nvidia motherboard with one of these K8MM3-V (MS 7181) and both the cpu and system fans hardly throttle at all. On cold boot they come on at ~4200 rpm and ~2500 rpm, then after a few mins CnQ kicks in and the speed reduces to ~3800 rpm and ~2200 rpm. The fans are still rather loud at these speeds, though they were never this loud on the previous motherboard.

Is there anything I can do to slow them anymore? Ideally without buying new fans.

The temperature is about 25 C idle and never seems to get above 35 C, so why doesn't it slow the fans down to say 1500 rpm?

I have the latest bios (3.10)

Thanks

Well it is pretty obvious your MB won't support a P4 CPU. I suspect if you have the latest Bios then this is down to the OS as to how the fan is controlled. Did you do a clean install of the OS when you installed this board and CPU? If not you could have a serious driver conflict.

You can also use proggies like Speedfan to control the fans speed and monitor them. Keep in mind that most Computer fans have a minimum speed they can go as well before they simply shut off.

The temps you have are pretty good overall so if it is just noise you are concerned with then it is likely different fans or even going to water cooling is the way to go to reduce noise.

@ athegn: Sorry for hijacking your thread, I thought our problems were fairly similar.

@ Tiresmoke: Thanks for the reply, you could be right about doing a clean install, though I doubt it'll make any difference. I'll probably end up buying a new fan because Speedfan did nothing to help.

"AMD Pentium 4", hmm... that's a new one. I'll have to remember to give this Belarc Advisor a wide berth.

Downloaded the latest Belarc Advisor software, Version 7.2.

Now correctly recognises the processor as:-

2.40 gigahertz AMD Athlon 64
