This may sound like a stupid question, but what do you open this '.rar' file with? I double-click the file and I get 'open with notepad, word, adobe...' etc.

@svet

great news!!! i got the USB disk to boot now. thanks man.

the root of the problem was that the setting of the USB disk should be set at forced FDD and not on AUTO. after i did that the USB booted!! haha damn im so happy. no i got the video card to work here in win xp.

thanks svet for all the guidelines.

followup question though, in updating the EC firmware, will the MSIHQ USB tool would work just like in the BIOS update?

Hi,
Please help, i have been trying to use this USB flashing tool...but instead of getting a message box detailing my mobo, i get a notepad file. i can close this and the program moves forward but again no message box asking me to select where the bios is located, just a notepad file. When i close the file it comes up again. I want it to work(as many will testify) but its doing my head in.

It is the file system used on the USB Flash Drive.  FAT32 is the default file system for most USB Flash drives. Right click on the USB Flash Drive in Windows Explorer and look at its "Properties".  You will then be able to see if the drive is FAT-formated or NTFS-formated.

Click on that File System drop down. Make it FAT32 & format. Quick Format will work fine. As for Volume Label, name it what you want or leave it alone. :-))

Nothing other than the downloaded correct bios file for your specific board. The only other possibility may be to have to use the 'Fix My USB Key', but that is easy enough to do. Read the tutorial carefully & all should go well. :-))

Ensure that they are no error{s} on the screen while test is running. [marked/listed with red]

yes, best leave it to test overnight if you are not sure if the system is stable.
Then press "ESC" key to reboot system, and boot from USB key again and proceed with BIOS update.

Some clarify:
'Fix My USB Key' Tool's option is equal alternative to format and fix the USB key with HP Tool.
[HP Tool correct the USB key geometry before format the stick, that's the important which can't be done with regular format]
E.g. format with HP Tool or using 'Fix My USB Key' Tool's option both have the same effect.

Yeah, also Tool check and detect the USB's FS, and if the FS is not supported Tool will refuse to continue

I just used 1.19a to update msi 870a g54 from version 6 to 7 without problems.
thx
fyi, the msi m-flash tool did not work, msi should not include this in their bios settings ...

two hints:
maybe change the start menu shortcut so it automatically wants to run as admin
expand the second option with "beta / already extracted bios file"

Hi I have no operating system installed on my msi 980-g65 MB, is there no way to use this tool, I need to upgrade my bios to 1.4 because my motherboard wont recognize my 6 core prosessor. I have tried M-flash a couple of times and it will not update correctly. Is there any way to update the bios with no OS? I have been working on this for weeks and decided that I need help and can't do this alone.  Also Hi everyone :)

If you have access to another computer with an MSI mainboard, then you can use the tool there to prepare your USB stick.

Otherwise, see here for alternative methods: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=119375.0

If you have any further questions, or need more assistance, please read the >>Posting Guide<< and open a new topic in the correct area, thank you.

Well you got lucky then, because if m-flash worked, it will kill the board in most cases...

I read the comprehensive guide but I am not sure how this tool works when you need to flash a motherboard that isn't on the computer you are currently using.

What I mean to say is that the computer I wish to flash will not boot correctly, hence I cannot flash it from there. The only way I can get this tool is through my laptop. And as I understand it, this tool does not work if you need to flash a motherboard off the computer you are currently using. Can I please get some clarification or suggestions?

Nope you can do that, use Mode 1 to prepare the stick on the notebook, then move and attach the USB key to the mainboard which you want to flash

i know many will act as tho'what i suggest is akin to threatening to light your mobo on fire, like, "OMG! Nooo, are you crazy..that's a sure way to ruin your board dude!" However MSI's Live Update does work, you dont have to put anything on a USB stick or read through HP's version of putting a bunch of files from WIN98 on to your stick and then do the other 12 steps necessary. That will turn most off right off the bat. Of course if you were running WIN98 & using a floppy drive, you wouldnt need to care...but in the day of XP, Vista and now, WIN7 you need to do either a CD or a USB and put all these files on it to prep it to use for the BIOS update.  Now Svet proposes to do this for you in his MSI version of HQ USB tool and sometimes it works and sometimes, it doesnt (i wasnt so lucky).  According to Svets utility, it does all the prepping of the stick "Fix my Stick" and for some that must happen but for some, it doesnt for some bizarre reason (it might be the brand of USB drive, it might be something else-a mystery).  Is using DOS according to most the safest way? Yes, however, Windows updates have made great strides in 2010.  Especially in the last year or so w/WIN7.  Prepping a USB stick is a pain but one day i'll try it just as a homework assign for myself and i'd encourage you to learn too.  Svet's tool works for many but not for everyone...it didnt for me because frankly, i didnt know how to prep a USB stick and was confused (like many) when it didnt "fix my stick" and then i tried 6 times and on two newly built machines, still didnt work.  I looked over the reg HQ Tool and seriously contemplated going through all that as I too had believed that if i dared to update via MSI.com/downloads using "Live" i was sure to wreck my new 890FXA-70 mobo.  If you get impatient finally and say, "Im going for it!"  (i did) go to www.msi.com/downloads and give Live Update your mobo info and it will download a utility to update all MSI products inc any graphic card you may have and drivers that may need updating all across the board.  There are two types of software for LIVE updates, one is downloaded to your computer and then you select (manually) what BIOS you want and follow insturctions from there. The other one is instantaneous and is Live and updates right off the website to your temp download folder or desktop. I used the one i could select manually and felt a bit better about.  Create a folder on desktop to place the zipped files in to and unzip it w/WINzip or WINRAR, select the two files inc BIOS update you need for software to run to update your BIOS (read up on what those are).   The software utility you download to your computer will ask you to direct it to the folder you have the two BIOS files in, navigate to your desktop and follow instructions.  A DOS box will pop up if youve done it right and you will see it replacing the 1.0 BIOS w/1.4 or 1.6 youve selected.  You dont even have to hit anything like F10 to save, it runs a scrip and reboots, go in to your mobo's BIOS anyways to check or simply look at the Boot info when it reboots and you will see if your BIOS updated and just save and exit.  It does it all for you. Im going to get flack for encouraging you to try but im glad i did, i now have v.1.6 on my board and was amazed how smoothly it went.

Sorry, anyone flashing within the Windows environment is playing Russian Roulette.  It's not that the LU process is flawed, it's Windows.  Any interruption, which Windows or other software installed, is notorious for, can then cause you to have a bad flash.  Flashing within Windows, regardless of what utility or board maker, is just not a wise procedure--just too risky.  Look at how many reports we've had of flashes going bad with Live Update or M-Flash...you'll get pages of posts in your search.  The Forum flasher hasn't had any.

To add more to this, flashing is a real-time issue, if something in windows is hogging the message-cue for whatever reason a flash can go bad.
If you are not able to fix this and reboot; the board will be dead.

A good example of this hogging is a bad harddisk, Windows keeps working but stalls for minutes, if such happens during your flash you can be sure it went bad, but reported as successful.
Windows has a very poor track record of stable running real-time programs.

In short DON'T DO IT!

I put the post out for those tearing out their hair and have tried other routes and failed.  ;-(( Yes, Windows does have services interupting and I did mine prior to installing WIN2010 Office so just had the WIN7 Pro 64-bit OS to contend with, not anything else in terms of software, I had updated Microsoft Patches and I had AVG 10 A/V, which i turned off.  So in total, i just had an OS running and i closed every prog i could in sys tray as well, I also disabled internet too in case Microsoft or A/V wanted to message me.  I did it slowly and thoughtfully.  I had a computer pro sitting right next to me as well who said," let's go for it"...i was of the mind like everyone here as i had read how horrible the outcome could be...i said, "i dont know, the forum mbrs are really against this and this is a brand new mobo."  I had tried the USB tool and it didnt work for me for some odd reason and i had put a lot of time and frustration in to it.  I said, WTH, let's do it!  I watched as it went smoothly and flawlessly, maybe i was lucky or maybe things have come a long way like i said and if done as i did here...is safer than many believe.  I wont tell adults NOT to do it because its not my place and i am not alone in my success w/LIVE Update 4 from reading others here who have done it too and have been successful.  Yes, there are boneheads who could screw things up no matter what they do as its done in haste and thoughtlessness.  If you can use the HQ USB tool or Svets ver. of it successfully then it does sound safer (Svets tool is faster too because you dont have to prep the stick-his scrip does it for you), i will acknowledge that as you bypass Windows especially with a Suite of progs on top of OS it is safer...however, if you want to give it a shot and you do the BIOS update thoughtfully and turn things off best you can and disconnect internet, etc.  You have a good chance of success...its not for any of us to tell someone what to do or to think...its their decision.  :hat tip:  To make it even safer, you could save the original BIOS on to a USB stick within the MSI mobo's BIOS youre updating and then set the 1st location to boot from USB/other if things fail.  If the flash fails, use that stick w/original BIOS on it for your computer to be directed to...id also study prior to doing this if you need to prep the stick in order to have the original BIOS on it as if thats the case-you might as well update with the stick using HQ Tool and do it via DOS. (Remember youre trying to save time and there doesnt seem to be a way around that in doing it via USB, CD-R, etc...batches of files need to be loaded first) unless Svet's tool works for you.

It's true that there are probably a great number of people who use LiveUpdate to flash their BIOS in Windows, and have never encountered any problems.

But the reason we created our own flash tool, and advise people to avoid using LiveUpdate and/or flash in Windows, is simply from the vast number of people who did encounter a problem and ended up with a bad flash. After all if LiveUpdate was perfect, no-one would have a bad flash, and there'd be no need for our tool. ;-))

If you're happy to flash in Windows, then that's your decision. And I'm pleased that it worked for you. But just remember the next time you do it, and it all goes wrong, no-one can say they weren't warned!

Yes flashing is tricky and always has been for the uninformed and the adults who dont like to read and be patient.
The main point seems to still be overlooked. The basic fact that flashing in Windows, if it can be avoided, should be. In the volumes of text flowing forth, it seems to keep returning to the 'Fix My USB Key' has been a problem? If a tally is needed, I can vouch it works with a Patriot 'Sporter' & an OCZ (el cheapo) 'Diesel'. Just flashed a BB X last night with the forum 1.19a & the Diesel with '0' problems. The mods & admins, & countless others, trust the forum USB flasher, & so do I. Every chance, I will promote it here in the forum to others. For those that desire to excecise their right to flash any way they want or by which method, so be it! In private, when it all 'goes bad' when deciding not to use the forum flasher after it was suggested, I'll be laughing my a** off thinking to myself, I/we told you so!

Thanks for the tool and all the info ;-)) One hitch though....hope I haven't missed the answer somewhere in the instructions. How do I uncompress the .rar file in Win 7. This looks like it was the only format available for download.
