MSI Media Live - No HDMI audio
« on: 19-December-07, 18:17:25 »

Hi all,
i have a problem with Media Live Barebone and the Realtek HD audio output on HDMI.
I have only video to HDMI output.

I have check the bios setting for 8ch support and it's enable and i have selected 8 ch in Realtek Mixer but there is no sound output to HDMI.

I have try to connect olny HDMI to lcd tv (philips 37pfl9632/d10) and i don't hear anything, i can see only image.
I have try to connect coaxial cable from lcd tv, using digital audio output connector of my lcd tv, to amplificator but i have no sound too.

I think that the problem is the the sound card do not set audio output to hdmi but only to spif (optical or coaxial) jack. Is there a way to force the audio output to HDMI ? In Realtek configuration i don't see where i can specify which output to use (SPIF, HDMI, etc) It is an automatic selection on driver startup ?

Any idea ?
Thanks very much,
Sandro De Matteis

Sorry I have no experience of using HDMI, but this might sound a little silly, but is there any option in the Nvidia display driver control panel to set this?

Your best bet would be to contact MSI Support directly, using the form at http://support.msi.com.tw

Please be sure to post back here, with any solution that helps you!

Gioppino

Did you get this hdmi audio sorted as I have the same problem.
If I play an avi file I get audio from the spdif but nothing from hdmi.
If I play a dvd I get no audio from the hdmi and a very muffled sound from the spdif.

I contacted msi and was sent instruction on setting the output but this didnt work at all, (its was already set correctly anyway.)

Any Help would be much appreciated.

To get the HDMI Audio working I did this

(1) Upgraded the bios to the latest version (1.61 - not checked with earlier versions but they may work)

(2) Set Enabled 8ch Audio to DISABLED in the BIOS.

I did exactly this but without success. I therefore asked for help at http://ocss.msi.com.tw/, but they said I should NOT disable 8-speaker in the BIOS, and that I should select "Digital" on my TV for the sound signal it expects. My Panasonic TX-37LZD800 has 4 HDMI inputs, only 1 of which actually let's you select this option (the options are "Auto / Digital / Analogue", or which the default was "Auto"). Anyway, nothing works on ANY of the HDMI inputs.

I should add that this is in Vista. I've got the R167 Realtek software, and I've finally got a "Realtek HDMI Output" with a TV icon representing it in the Sound control panel, and it *thinks* it's working (you can see activity on the bar graph), but no sound is getting to the TV.

Getting very frustrated now!

Try the same with XP or MCE2005, Vista and sound are 2 things that don't work well.

So are you saying it's a problem only in Vista, and do you consider it to be a driver problem?

Incidentally, I tried the latest release of the Realtek driver I could find (I think R195). Still couldn't get the sound to work! :(

I'm just trying to work out if this will be possible to do. It's a shame if I can't use HDMI, as the picture is SOOO much better when I connect with HMDI. No good though if I can't get sound.

Note this when you are trying XP:
From the MSI Website:
Note: Please use BIOS v1.5 only, and DO NOT use v1.61 if you have Windows MCE 2005.

So, if you flashed the 1.61 bios and are going to try XP, you may experience some other problems.

Hi,

Personally, I don't plan on using XP (I'd rather settle for using my current Vista setup using the composite connections, as this is quite stable in every other way. Also, I plan to install "FIJI" before not too long, so that I can get cracking with developing some handy little add-ins for Vista MCE. ;)

I got back a reply from MSI as follows:
Quote
We could successfully get HDMI sound when "Realtek HDMI Output" is set as default, with BIOS v1.61 load default. Is possible, please try to reinstall Windows Vista by HDMI, then install all the drivers again.
Thank you.

This accompanied some screengrabs "showing" it working on Vista, but to be honest, I'd got to the same stage (ie the "Realtek HDMI Output" item showing as "Working", and with the bar graph fluctuating with sound changes), but I still do NOT get any sound coming to the TV.

Personally, I don't see how installing Vista from scratch, using an HDMI connection, would fix the problem...

I can confirm that HDMI audio does actually work on the Media Live under Vista. You might want to check either your HDMI cable or your TV, if you are sure that the audio settings in Vista are correctly set.

I have got the same problem and the German MSI support was not able to help. Did anybody here make the HDMI sound working? I do not even have optical digital sound, only the chinch audio plugs are working.

After faffing for a week I followed this guide

http://www.gilsmethod.com/how-to-enable-hdmi-audio-using-your-hp-pavilion-media-center-pc

Take particular attention to the supported format tab.  Untick all the supported formats, and only have 48 KHz ticked.  Anything else didn't work

Bios setting is enabled for 8 channel audio

Hope this helps
