K9N DIAMOND NO POST, POSSIBLE RMA???
« on: 12-April-08, 09:31:46 »

Hi All
Im setting up a K9N Diamond and need some more info on the CPU compatability/FSB numbers etc

details are
  Sempron SDA3200CWBOX 3200+
OCZ gold 1gb (will install other 1gb later)
MSI 6600 (non GT, looking at a bigger card later)
  K9N DIAMOND
Thermaltake 410w (not real big but brand name and should be able to fire it up, MAYBE )

I installed all the parts as I have done before, When I started it up the 4 led's stayed red
Which according to the manual etc says that the CPU is not working or possibly not compatible
This link (which shows the compatible K9N DIAMOND CPU's) shows FSB 200???   http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=prodcpusupport&prod_no=1028&maincat_no=1&cat2_no=171&cat3_no=#menu
Mine is not on the list  ??? :wall:, I have not run into CPU issues before and have setup about 6 MSI computers with no troubles
Can someone please explain the FSB and some details on which CPU's can/cant be used, And why?
Im hoping it is only incompatible in a way :bonk:, looking at a bigger CPU ETC ETC but thought I could fire it up atleast for now
The CPU was brand new and sealed
Any info or help appreciated

You have to update the BIOS, after that it shouldn't be a problem.
4 red looks like a broken CPU....could be BIOS too.
Try a different CPU to be sure/or update the BIOS.

Also, Athlon64 CPUs don't have an 'FSB' as such, so don't worry about that ;-))

is it possible that this CPU is not compatible? It is not on the supported MSI list for this board, see link above

Also can someone explain a bit more about the FSB, I have found different figures/specs on the net for this CPU ???

why does the list say it will not support Phenom, Are we able to use the Phenoms on this board now with later Bios?

  Thanks

The CPU interconnects to the components on the mainboard via the HyperTransport interconnect. The FSB (Front Side Bus) is Intel's interconnect, it serves the same purpose as the HyperTransport, only they both operate in different ways. The HyperTransport of course being the superior interconnect.

Phenom's are not supported on your mainboard and they won't be with a newer BIOS release either.

So my CPU is the Manila? I was unable to find the actual specs on my 3200 Sempron CPU, I should say I found lots of specs searching for the same part number so I still was uncertain which one I had, I have not searched for the actual CPU number only box serial number, I will have to pop it out again

So that makes it different if it is compatible :bonk:
I will have to go through the steps
Any reccomendations, How exactly would I go about it? BIOS/CMOS?

Thanks

Look again at the link in your 1st post for CPU support, all except the Phenoms will work.

Judging from some of your comments I assume you're in Australia, is that correct?
Any AM2 dual core will work on your MB. Is there any reason in particular you want one the slower CPUs? I know in the U.S. that even the X2 5600+ (2.8 GHz) can be had as low as $125, in fact X2 5600+ was $122 at newegg the last time I looked.

Thanks for the specs/info
I have a 4000+ brisbane on the way for about $50 aus delivered, I cant really find out much until I receive it which may be 2 weeks max, I hope ???
Then I will know if it is the board or CPU, May even be something else

Off topic but, I also have on the way a new NX8600GT-TD512EZ OC SLI silent heatpipe setup, about $66 AUS delivered
Anyone using one of these on a K9N Diamond?
The 8600 will go nicely with the K9N Diamond, looking at a big copper heatpipe cooler too, With all the copper, it will be worth a bit at the recyclers ;-))

Hi Bas
I just wanted to ask am I able to "update the BIOS" as you said in first reply, without it actually posting or not being able to firstly change any bios settings
I have double checked everything and tried a few steps from Bosamar's site, with no luck
It now for some reason fired up when I turned on the power supply without the power/reset switches connected, What the heck
Anyone have any Idea what would cause it to start up directly from the power supply? It still has the 4 red led's though
  Thanks All

You have to be able to boot in the BIOS, if you can't get there, there is no way you can flash at all.
But your 4 red is showing bad CPU or such.
Do you have JPWR1 connected? The 4 pin 12V power header for the CPU?

The auto-startup is a BIOS setting that changes a chip behavior on the motherboard, nothing special about that.

Is it possible that a conflict non compatible part may cause the CPU/Board to not post, maybe ram etc, Im double checking now, I think not but just thought I would check
It may be an Issue to RMA too as I bought the DIAMOND from the USA and Im in OZ, Hopefully when I try another CPU it will be OK, Then have to RMA CPU, Is it common to get a DOA CPU???
Any other suggestions to help get to post read CPU
I found another post which says he had the same issue and had to RMA then it was fine, Anyone else had similar K9N DIAMOND no post/cpu issue/RMA perhaps
I hope I dont have to go that far
If worst come to worst (ALL options tried and tested) I will buy another board here In OZ then RMA or even have the other/first one repaired if need be, or if possible
Im pretty set on using the K9N DIAMOND to run a new HTPC setup, with less fans unlike the K8N SLI im using now with the 6600GT SLI which also doesnt help, Although I want to hook it up to my pioneer big sound and nec projector setup I still dont want to hear it EG when watching a movie and it goes quiet, Looking at the NZXT DUET, anyone using one???

So either way I will get it going, RMA, repair or new board after trying all possibilities :wall:

Motherboards and CPU's seldom DOA, but it happens, rare but still.
Having bad memory is far more common.
Harddisks and Optical drives DOA the most :lol_anim:

But is something wouldn't DOA or break after a while there would be no need for warranty would it? :lol_anim:

Think I found the problem, the white plastic piece that seats the CPU has FOXCONN written on it, AHHHH WHAT THE :wall: :bonk: ??? :shocked_anim:  ;D ;-)) :lol_anim:
Do they source parts from the competition or are they in cahoots with FOXCONN???
My mate had a FOXCONN system built for him and it lasted 3 weeks but all brands have problems, But that name sounds like FOXXYCONNARTISTS :photo:

I ill just have to wait and see if it goes with a new CPU but from what I have read it does not sound good, RMA stories etc

Well, I bet there is a common plant that makes sockets for both MSI and Foxconn. Might have been a mix-up. As far as I know, MSI makes the architecture for the board. Then, to make it, they get the best and cheapest components from whereever.

Could also be you got a fake flake of a board.

It is a bit hard to see how the name on the plastics would create the no-go. Are all power cables for the motherboard in place?

I'm sure it's like Fredrik states, that they have a common plant that makes the CPU sockets for both MSI and Foxconn. I got a cover for the socket(mine was black, with Foxconn on it.

Foxconn are the biggest computer component manufacturering company. They make mainboards, VGA cards, etc etc. They are usually handed designs (from NVIDIA for e.g), then Foxconn will manufacture the goods and NVIDIA will sell them.

Yeah CPU socket on mine is white with FOXCONN
Been looking at the Australian RMA setup, It looks like there is no RMA for end users in Australia only distributors or resellers
In the USA from what I have heard/read, Most people with any trouble at all just send the item back direct to MSI and get a new one, is it that easy in the USA to RMA, even read somewhere that they replaced/repaired a Graphics card that was not even within the warranty period
How detailed is the RMA process in the USA?
I think It is going to be a major drama to RMA here in OZ

If I buy my part from Newegg, I have 30 days to return a motherboard for full refund (I pay shipping) or replacement at my discretion. After that thirty day period I must send it to MSI USA who will either repair it or send me a new one at their discretion, parts and labor free, during the warranty period.
I have returned a mother board under warranty to them because the NIC quit working. I recieved the same board back about two weeks later and it has been working fine since.

I received a (fast) reply from MSI Australia (Albert), He told me to update the bios to 1.7, Is there a way to update without being able to post?
I'm still not not 100% sure the CPU is compatible? It does say in below link "since 1.7", pretty much sums it up
So I need a compatible CPU to update the BIOS? I wont really need to update the BIOS once I get the bigger CPU, Well hopefully it will post with another (compatible) CPU, Even the 4000 brisbane says it is compatible since 1.7?

Albert from MSI Australia has, after a few emails backwards and forwards, told me basically to send it in and they will update the BIOS to 1.7 and test etc I guess, Here is his actual words from the email

"If you want to return the board back to us, please return the board only and keep all the accessories with you. Also, please write that ra number on the box."

Going by what he has said above, Does it look like he means send it in and we will fix it or send it in and we will fix it and charge you??? any opinions, I asked about any charges and he said it depends on the receipt of purchase???
I need an RA number first? I have questioned him about this, waiting for reply

With this (K9N DIAMOND) problem of the original BIOS not working with most CPU's, What CPU's are you's using to fire them up?
And update BIOS, I bought the 3200 Sempron because it was small and thought there would be less chance of it being incompatible and mainly because it uses less voltage etc which would possibly make it easier to do the initial boot
Oh well it has been a learning curve but I must say Albert from MSI Australia has been very helpful so far and Im hoping it will be covered??? Anyone had similar RMA dealings in Australia? And what was the outcome?

Thanks All

If the board is still in warranty, it will be repaired free of charge (except for the cost of shipping it to MSI). Use the antistatic bag it came in and if you want to keep the origional box don't send it back with the mobo. When they say keep all accessories that is what they mean.
The real question is wouldn't it be quicker to borrow a compatible cpu long enough for the bios flash or do you want to take up to two weeks to RMA it?

It may be pretty hard for me to get hold of a (compatible) CPU, Then I still have to stuff around, It may take another week or 2 befor I get my 4000 Brisbane anyway, So if I leave it in their capable hands, it should be returned and hopefully ready to go when I get my 4000 arrives
I will wait
I wish I would have known about this before, Well something to look at next time

You could take the board to a local computer shop, and see if they will let you drop in a compatible CPU and flash the BIOS for you.

Bugger that, They wanted $60 (Australian) just to put a PSU in me mates computer the other day  :angryfire:

There is about 3-4 PC shops here but I would rather MSI handle it, more trustworthy than the hillbillies here that call themselves computer technicians, salesmen etc etc, And no im definitely not myself, I couldnt charge that to plug in 5-6 wires and screw-unscrew 6 screws, I'd go broke

All the staff in the shop would probably run over in amazement, They have probably never seen one (K9N DIAMOND)
So I wouldnt trust it being in their hands, I would need to find out exactly what CPU (FOR SURE) I can use then Hope they have one laying around, I would need to find a list of compatible CPU's (with original BIOS) or vice-versa, See what they have then check compatibility
I will wait a few weeks if I have to, I just hope they can sort it out no troubles without sending me a bill???

I rang 2 local shops the other day for some thermal paste, $20.00AU for 3.5g of arctic silver
I have a tube, plus the 2 prep/cleaning solutions for $22.00AU (DELIVERED) all the way from america
The worst thing is the middle men here, The wholesalers are making or trying to make more then the resellers, Which drives the price way too high, In my other hobby the markup is basically 100%, Shops here or anywhere nearly need to get their supplies cheaper/internationally just to compete, thats nearly in all industries, But big business is already doing this and killing the NON franchises, and independant businesses

Nearly everything I buy comes from the USA, Only because it is about half the price of PC stuff here in OZ, And im talking after delivery, Our dollar is nearly matching too :agrees:

Im glad im not in the UK, man everything is about 3 times the price of stuff in the US, I feel sorry for you guys
I would have to get a bank loan to build a computer there, Not to mention in other european countries, You guys must order online to save some $$$, or wait???
TIME IS MONEY, I have plenty of time

Anyway I'm blabbering on (something to read), Im going to go ahead with the RMA in the Morning so I will let you's know how it all goes, The system is not urgent, I have been amazingly patient collecting bits, waiting to build this one

Im glad im not in the UK, man everything is about 3 times the price of stuff in the US, I feel sorry for you guys
I would have to get a bank loan to build a computer there, Not to mention in other european countries, You guys must order online to save some $$$, or wait???

Well you're partially right, you can get stuff cheap here if you shop around online. For example, I was in a fix the other week and had to buy a Socket AM2 Akasa cooler from a Maplin store in Birmingham, which cost me £12.99. The same cooler was available online from ebuyer.com for just over £4, but I needed it there and then, and couldn't wait the few days for delivery

Anyway, keep us posted how you get on

Yeah I come across that regularly but usually when I weigh up the odds especially on larger items it is way better to wait

In Australia I just got an MSI 8500 TD512E for $39.00 + $16.00, $55.00AU delivered, the card is getting on a bit now but for the price new in the box and 1 year warranty from seller
This one will do me mates new SLI build

In the US I just got an MSI 8600GT TD512EZ for 73.50AU delivered, It will do nicely for my K9N DIAMOND soon if it goes

So I saved a little bit of money on them, Compared to AUS prices, And ofcourse warranty is an issue/non existent when buying internationally due to return costs etc etc but if you can save enough money over time it doesnt really matter in the end, Plus you have to be careful and pay safely

The PSU, SATA Maxtor 250GB drive for my first K8N SLI PLATINUM build are still going strong and they both came from the USA about 2 years ago :hat tip:

Yep you can get stuff cheap anywhere if you look around, But the US is a goldmine if you play it right, I have about 250+ USPS shipping docs in a pile from the last couple of years, I get DVD's (well before they are in OZ) delivered to my door all the way from the US (florida) for around $4 (delivery) and im inland about 6 hours drive too, And they arrive in around 4-5 days on average, Also in that time I have never had a dispute or problem that went bad for me, Usually ends up the dishonest sellers refunding overpriced shipping, or the whole lot on some occasions for their dishonesty ;D

ANYWAY, I will let you's know how it goes, Crossing my fingers

This is the reply I was waiting for, Short and simple but all the info I needed confirmed

"Depend on the S/N, we will provide warranty service to Nov/09
Or 3 years warranty from the date which show on your invoice.
To apply a ra number, please fill out the attached form and send the form back to us, our staff will contact you ASAP.
We will not charge for customer for normal warranty service."

I just need to get an RA number and get it on the way, I hope I dont get stuffed around with the RA number, I want to send it off today, They should receive it within a few days and hopefully have it back to me in a week or 2 at the most Im hoping, We will see

I got the RA number :lol_anim:

The ra number is BLAH -BLAH, please write this number on the box and send to Unit 6, 4-6 Junction St, Auburn, NSW 2144.
We will return the replacement ASAP.

Im not too sure about the last bit though
I hope I dont get a K9N Platinum as a replacement :nono:
If the Diamond is EOL it does not look good, I only really wanted the MOBO for the Creative sound, Nearly the same as my K8N SLI PLATINUM, But better slightly

Any opinions as to whether or not I will get another DIAMOND MOBO??? :confused2:

I always attach a little note to the mobo itself detailing the exact issue that I am having. That will help the bench tech in case he didn't get the message. I'm sure MSI is aware of the differences between a Platinum and a Diamond version and you will either get yours back updated or a new Diamond to replace it.

I read in another thread about someone getting back a different MOBO to the one they sent, Well that is a relief if you say I will get my Diamond returned/fixed or a new one (the same)

I filled in the actual MSI Australia RMA forms and the second form has an section to describe the problem etc, I made it pretty clear that I wanted the BIOS updated and tested/confirmed working
RMA AUSTRALIA forms found on the bottom (LINKS) of the page, link below (I used the word forms and emailed it first to doublecheck)
http://www.msicomputer.com.au/html/RMA/RMANo.htm

I have never had to return an MSI item so I will be pleased if I get it sorted ASAP

So far I have been impressed with the service and help from MSI AUSTRALIA

I just hope I dont get any bad news :nooo:

Normally the give the same board in return (repaired) or a better board.
So far I have not seen they return less boards with EOL.

Good luck with your rma.  I sent one back to MSI in California and they received it on April 18th, and I still have not heard anything back from them.  I went to msi's support system and sent off an inquiry, but it too, has just sat there with no action.  Hope it works out better for you.  I have a K8 Diamond Plus that I sent back, had the same problem with the 4 red lights, sent in the cpu, checked good, so it is probably the board.  It gave me various combinations of  red and green lights at first then decided to stay on 4 reds.  Changed out everything on the board, so I am hoping to hear back from them.  Msi in the states gave me the run around on the phone, first calling Florida and then California, and they finally told me to apply for an rma online.  Go figure.  Pc ran fine for a year and a half, except for occcasional hangs and lockups.

I got my RMA'd MOBO back and it looked to be a secondhand refurbished one :angryfire:
very poorly packaged, It says on the warranty conditions/rules etc, That the MOBO must be sent with some foam under it preferably the one's they are sold with, I got mine back just in the box without my foam returned??? Which is handy for doing the CPU's etc, Now I have to use something else, Not happy there, and very poor practices sending MOBO's like that
It is up and running with BIOS version 1.6, Not sure what happened to installing 1.7?
All is running well so far except for the onboard sound, I tried to install using the disc that came with it but as stated here in the forum it wont work, https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=109359.0
I have downloaded the latest drivers and most of them say no audigy soundcard found???
I have installed the disc from my K8N SLI PLATINUM and it has the old programs (limited) and when testing speaker output via SPDIF it only shows 2 speakers working but I have installed the AUDIGY goldmine demo from the K9N DIAMOND soundblaster disc and it plays all the surround as it should
If this keeps up I will have to get an Audigy soundcard
When I installed the older soundblaster live 24bit it shows exactly that in the hardware list not Audigy, I have had some audigy drivers installed but the Audigy programs will not work, It comes up with an error no soundcard or similar

Does anyone have any reccomendations?

One thing that bugs me is the Creative chip on the K9N DIAMOND is the same as the creative chip on my K8N SLI PLATINUM (CA0106) How can it be a 24bit LIVE and an AUDIDY SE chip???, I think it is really a 24bit LIVE, Can anyone guide me on how to get the audigy setup working on this MOBO
The main reason I bougth this board was to have upgraded sound and I'm aware that it was only going to be very little difference as I was aware they were the same (CA0106) chipsets and mainly wanted the new creative programs etc with the new features/settings but at this stage I'm very dissapointed using the old sound setup

Damn I think I got a bit of a dud here, I have always been happy with MSI products but they have stuffed up with this one, I will get it sorted one way or another as mentioned I will get another soundcard but should not have to
Any help appreciated

Yeah Yeah you were right but I thought I would get a piece of foam back atleast and I would not call it an accessory???

I found that alot of the time the K9N DIAMOND MOBO is listed as creative 24 bit sound and does not actually say AUDIGY? The MSI USA site .com and the Taiwan .tw list them differently, One says audigy and the other says just creative 24 bit sound

Has anyone come accross this before? and how was it resolved?

Well after some reading in the Creative forum I have come to the conclusion that if creative dont get off their bottoms they will be outdone soon, They are going downhill really fast after all the vista compatibility problems and lack of updated drivers
So, Whos fault is this one, The K9N DIAMOND is sold with onboard AUDIGY but I'm unable to get it running as AUDIGY, I'm only able to get the Soundblaster 24bit LIVE running in the HARDWARE manager
I bet an email to both MSI and Creative will get a reply stating to go to the opposite, Send one to MSI and I bet they say to talk to Creative, Send one to Creative and they will say take it up with the MOBO manufacturer

There is a major problem here though that needs fixing, But who???

It will certainly make me research into it in depth when I purchase another MOBO and I was looking at the MSI AM2+ MOBO with the X-FI onboard, Not sure now though

Anyone know of some other soundcard brands worth a look at, Only with the SPDIF/toslink options and 7.1 high end type cards, I have never really looked into them, Also what is the support and driver update like?

Thanks All
