In the BIOS there is no option for disabling the CF reader. Changing the boot order does nothing. There are no jumpers in the manual or on the board that are related to the CF (the sole jumper on the board is for clearing the CMOS). How are people installing XP on the hard drive as C: instead of E:?

Thanks

Which one do you have? Sorry, I'd never even heard of these until now!
http://global.msi.eu/index.php?func=prodpage2&maincat_no=134&cat2_no=614

Wasn't XP already installed on the unit? If so, why do you need to reinstall XP?

Having never seen one of these units, the only thing I can possibly suggest is if you can open up the unit, and see if the CF reader connects to the mainboard via a USB header, and disconnect it while you install XP, then Windows will install to C:. Just make sure you reconnect it again afterwards!

Otherwise, if the CF reader is somehow hard-wired to the mainboard, you may just have to live with Windows being on the E: drive... but thats only cosmetic, it won't make any difference to how it works, unless you get some really poorly programmed application that assumes Windows is installed on C: drive, but that is pretty rare.

You may get a better answer though if you contact MSI Support using the online form at http://ocss.msi.com.tw but please be sure to post back if you get a solution!

Wind PC 120 (XP) http://global.msi.eu/index.php?func=proddesc&prod_no=1603&maincat_no=134

This is a barebones, no memory or hard drive. I've submitted a support request to MSI, I'll post if they can help.

Submitted a support request to MSI, received a phone call from them in less then 10 minutes!

Having built computers for many years it never occurred to me to create a partition then restart the computer before continuing the Windows install. After restarting the computer it defaults the hard drive as C:, allowing you to format and install like normal.

Thanks

Is there no option to disable the USB in the BIOS? That would stop it  ;D

The Wind barebones don't have PS/2 ports for mouse/keyboard, so you can only use USB devices, which would be unusable if you disabled USB controller.

I had same problem when installing XP. I used tec805's idea and restarted windows install after setting partition and voila drive C appeared. Thanks  :worship:

MSI tech are indeed correct this quirk can be worked around by restarting after partitioning/formatting the drive.
