How to install Windows without a CD drive
« on: 04-October-08, 21:16:36 »

Windows XP / 2000

Use the WinSetupfromUSB tool found here:
http://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=125750.0

Note: You'll need a USB flash drive, preferably a 1gb (or higher) which will leave you room to copy drivers and additional programs too, and you'll still need an original Windows XP CD to copy the files from. And of course you need a valid product key for it to be legal! :hat tip:

Windows Vista / 7

You need basically:
  • a USB flash drive at least 4GB in size
  • a Windows Vista DVD

To sum up:
  • Format your USB drive, with the NTFS filesystem
  • Open Command Prompt as an administrator, and run the Bootsect.exe program off the Windows Vista DVD to make the USB drive bootable
  • Copy the contents of the Windows Vista DVD to the USB drive
  • Restart your PC, press F11 (or whichever key it is) to access the Boot menu, and select your USB drive to boot from

Well you have to if you use a Wind, as they have no cdrom or floppy.

Well another option is that to take out the 2.5 inch HD and reformat the HD using an ide/sata converter to USB. After that..put the HD in any laptops/notebooks with an optical drive and install any OS you want. Using Stu's suggestion is good for netbooks with onboard SSD storage drives.

Greetings!

I have downloaded an XP edition, x86 (32bit) and have tried it on a friend of mine's MSI Wind U100. A problem occurs after the restart, when I have to start the second installation - a missing "hal.dll" file is said to be the problem. I will be eternally thankful to any one of you if you can help me solve this.

P.S> I have a bootable USB drive, 1GB , via WinSetupFromUSB application.

Regards,
Alex

Ok, I chose the 1st option again, but the installation starts again from the very beginning. After the first reboot of the system, when copying of the files is complete, I have to restart. And then the problem arises - what follows next ?

P.s> Sorry for the impertinence but this is my first time installing Windows to a non-CD-ROM computer.

After 1st restart, boot from HDD, then there 2 options will appear.
One will give HAL dll error, the other one will not.
When installation is done, you can manual remove the unnecessary boot choose entry

Once again I'll have to apologize, but when I change the first booting device to Hard Disk, a problem occurs - "Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem." I have fears that the hard disk may have been damaged to some extend ...

It is disabled, by default I suppose, because I didn't make any amendments in the BIOS section.

Should I enable it>?

Wipe entire HDD with HDD's manufacturer Tool,
then try again

Simple way to install XP without CD (AHCI must be disabled!).

1 create a bootable USB-stick with DOS on it.

2 copy the i386 directory onto your USB-stick.

3 start DOS on the USB stick and format the harddisk of the drive with format c: /s (makes it a FAT32 partition and bootable)
If not, then run fdisk first and delete all partitions on the harddisk and create a new one, then reboot and retry the previous line)

4 copy the i386 partition to the harddisk: <md c:\i386> <copy \i386 c:\i386> (between <> are the commands needed)

5 reboot the machine and let it boot the harddisk (remove USB stick!).

6 <cd i386> <winnt.exe> (I thought it was that one, there are a few exes in it)

7 after installation and drivers, goto command-prompt in XP, <convert c: /fs:ntfs> to make the drive NTFS.

Voila, you are set and installed XP without a CDrom. ;-))

Formatting the disks is done in Windows setup, create your bootable USB flash drive using that tool, then boot from it, and follow the instructions that Windows Setup gives.

i have been installing from USB only for the past 4 years, and the best tool to 'prep' the drive is the Windows USB Boot utility software. Very easy to work with and it does the job EVERY time
