K9N2 SLI Platinum issues :(
« on: 05-March-09, 00:51:03 »

Well, i am a newbie on these forums but i am in need of a little assistance... I have a SILVERSTONE ZEUS ST65ZF 650W power supply so i dont think that this is the problem... but it seems as if whenever i play World of Warcraft... my pc will hard lock the only way to get out of this is to manually reboot the system.  i have tried many drivers and they all do the same thing eventually, and i have looked at all the error logs and none of them have any information about the hard lock... please i need help with this.

"RAM:6 gigs ( 2 1 gig sticks and 2 2gig sticks) 800mhz 5.5.5.18 "

Use only matched memory sticks.
Also do memory check with >>Memtest86<<

I Tested my ram last night it ran all the way through with 0 errors and the sticks are matched with same speed / timings its just the size that is different

Forget about matched speed, you must use matched memory pairs,
same brand with same specification{same size, same models}

The ram is the same brand ( Mushkin ) the only difference is size, however this I do not feel is my problem as every other application, game, music, video, works like a dream... it's just whenever i play world of warcraft with or without ventrillo open at the same time it hard locks my pc and i have to power it down and power it back up, I cannot CTRl+ALt+Delete out of it or alt tab, I cannot move the mouse or anything.  By the way there is no real pattern or time frame when it crashes, sometimes its 10 minuets other times its 4 hours, it makes no since to me and it really kinda bothers me.  I am beggining to belive that it may just be World of Warcraft or something isnt compatible with my equipment or something, which it should be i mean i blow the system requirnments out of the water...

what os and version
which nvidia drivers for display and chipset
do you have a sound card(audigy) or are you using onboard?

WoW has been picky , several of us have had the same style of problem , search this forum for my name you will see some threads that might help out with this

few things to try
make sure sli memory is disabled , also cool and quiet and spread spectrum turned off in bios
try with the 2x2gb ram only
try with slower ram speed , looser timmings ... the memory might have ran fine on memtest , but for some reason in game it seems picky about the speed and timing , not sure about the 6gb at 1066 being  a problem , i have the full 8gb dual channel 4x2gb and it runs fine now , but had to use the 181 and up drivers to get it stable , also sp1 for vista 64 helped

try without the 4 pin molex on the mobo plugged in , from what i can tell that is only for the onboard vga or pci-e cards that dont have their own power connectors , but have never found the truth on that

in WoW , keep the shadows set to lowest setting , this also seem to help ,

also make sure you unistall nvidia drivers , reboot into safe mode and use driversweeper to clean out any left over files , boot in to vista normally , install chipset drivers first , then make sure you uncheck display drivers when installing the chipset drivers so it doesnt install incorrect drivers , then reboot and install diplay drivers , download both from nvidia directly before you uninstall anything

SLI memory?
in the memory timing options in the bios there is an option to disable SLI memory or to flip it to AUTO  i flipped it to Disable

Update... Ok well i was playing today and it froze... this really needs to stop... it makes no since, it should not be freezing... ram is good hdd's are good, cpu is good, psu is good, video card is good. WHAT IS THE PROBLEM HERE!!!

i have nothing to back up what Svet is saying , yet I have to agree for now .... this problem you have can be very annoying ,

also , my original thread that has the same kinda problem , maybe not the exact same but sounds close , check it out for ideas AFTER removing the mismatched ram ,
http://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=121917.0

its the small details that seem to kill , trust me i know your frustration with this , something with WoW and vista and nvidia doesnt want to play nice

but by not removing the sticks of ram , you can't rule out that they are the problem , but once you are down to just a matched pair of ram and then test for a few days , if the problem is still there , then try the other ram , still a problem , then lower the speed on the ram , also could memtest each stick of ram by itselfs but ,
trust me , these guys here know a lot about these boards , and if they keep saying that the ram is the issue , then listen , i have found that these guys are dead right 99.9% of the time

side note fredrik:
sli mem setting in bios , seems to have caused some issues on older athlon x2 chips , where the cpu isn't setting the right ram timmings with the mobo
sli mem setting is for ram that is labeled that way and there are settings that are really tight for the ram that is stored in the spd
for example , my ram can run stock at auto settings in bios and it will run 5-5-5-18-23 at 1.8v but the "sli" memory enabled would force settings to 5-5-5-15-22 at 2.1v
its just like a performance profile , found on nvidia chipsets and certian ram

Ok, I did removed my 2 1 gig sticks and left the 2 2 gig sticks in ran memtest86+ and it passed with flying colors, boot into windows everything nice and snappy open up Vent... open up wow... 10 minuets later it froze... so i did it with just my 2 1 gig sticks ran memtest86+ still passed just fine, booted up into windows just fine, opened up Vent and WoW same thing froze a few minuets later... my SLI ram option in the bios i have had it to auto and disabled and this seems to have no effect on the frequency of the lockups, also my ram is matched exactly to my processors need's it is 800mhz ram but instead of running at 800mhz its running at 375mhz so that in dual channel would be 750mhz

Update...

Now its not only freezing with wow... I was playing Day of Defeat Source and it froze... with vent open... i am sooooooo angry right now

so i am taking advice from a friend... i flipped off nvidia's PhysX driver option

New update... taking the PhysX didnt fix it...

Another update...

I booted up windows tonight it was really cold in my room it froze right after logging in...

I think it may be possibly related to GPU clock speeds... i lowered my clock from 600 stock to 550mhz and shader from 1500 stock to 1375 and it was fine... so i raised it back up and within 10 min of playing day of defeat source with no ventrillo open it froze

Don't know how particular you are with things, but if the card despite good cooling(?!) doesn't work at full speed you could ask for a replacement.

i lowered the clocks on it to see if it would remedy the problem... but today i just booted into windows and opened up ventrillo and was talking to my friends and then unexpectedly the monitor went black said no signal but i could still hear my friends talking and then it froze like it did in games...

Does the sound continue after the freezing? That is a sign of overheated, underpowered, or damaged graphics card.

Just something else I had in mind: Have you got the correct voltage for the s i n g l e  pair of sticks you use?

By the way if WoW is the only time you experience the problem you might have a look in their info. bank, too.

When it Freezes the sound does not continue it will loop for 5 seconds and then stop and no other sounds can be heard after the ram runs on 1.8v but i have it on auto so it should be set correctly and also World of Warcraft is not the only time i experience the lockups any more.  it has happened twice just on my windows desktop a few times playing Day of Defeat : source

but thats what i am saying these are matched pairs with the only difference being size... they are same speed same clocks same brand everything is the same they are ment to be ran together

Same Size is not meant to be run together.

Does not matter if it is the same manufacturer, same speed, same settings.

You can not run two different Sizes together like you described in your original thread.

Therefore, your pairs are not properly matched.

I have two sets of OCZ Reaper Memory.  One is PC-8500, one is PC-6400.

My set of PC-8500 will NOT run with the PC-6400 while both are set to 800mhz.

I take either set out, and leave the other in, and they run fine.

Try removing your mismatched pair one more time but reset all your bios DRAM settings to their default/auto settings.

I read quite a few of the user reviews of people that had that PSU like yours and it seems to have a very high faikure rate and/or DOA. Get a good single rail PSU such as a Corsair VX450/550W/TX650W or PC P & C 610W. Don't waste your money on a cheap PSU.

Haven't you, sort of? A weaker graphics card with less power consumption works.

And sound without vision is like I wrote "...a sign of overheated, underpowered, or damaged graphics card".

Look at the prices of >> Corsair << at newegg. They are very good prices for high quality PSUs.
The only good test of a PSU at home is a video card that requires a lot of amps and a graphics intensive application that puts a heavy load on it. Those so called PSU testers are useless in that respect because they don't put any load on it.

That one can only deliver 53A for the +12V rails to share if there is no draw on the +3.3 and +5V rails. Obviously, there would be draw for the +3.3 and +5V rails.

This Corsair TX650 would be a better choice with 52A available at all times on a single +12V rail. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139005

This is something like what I got, but non-modular:

Here is another interesting one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153101  However, it seems perfectly new, and perhaps one should wait for more opinions.

PC Power & Cooling PSUs are a good choice as well--certainly better than suggesting Thermaltake.

Hey guys, thanks for the recommendations, but my grandma is the one buying this for me and she thinks that my computer is failing because i bought the parts from the internet, lol so yeah she is going to a local computer shop to pick up the OCZ i mentioned... however why do you guys dislike a multi 12V rail psu so much?

Because their specs and list of specs are not trustworthy, or at least very hard to make sense of.

Another thing, which Bas emphasises, is that according to the PSU standard, each rail should not supply more than about 18 - 20 Ampères, which seldom is enough for modern processors and graphics cards.

yes but the rails combine their power for devices that need more power ( i.e. graphics card )

Incorrect.  There are PSUs where you can move a switch and change a split rail to a single, but those are few.  The rails have limiters which prevent any rail supplying more than the limit, in this case, 18A.  If a rail needs 19A+ then you will have an underpower situation.  This has been discussed to death here. Just do a search.

Below are just two topics concerning PSUs as well as split rail/single rail.

Have your grandmother read this thread so she has an understanding for what you need, why and that buying PSU parts from the internet stores does not mean they are junk. It's what you buy (low quality or the wrong parts), not where you buy it from that causes the problems. As a guess I would say 90% or more of us that build our own PCs buy the parts from online stores. You also have a much better selection of parts to choose from. You will also note that those of us that have built a few don't have the problems 1st time builders do.
All that said there are far too many people that buy the cheapest or the worst, under powered PSUs they can get their hands on. Read through the forum, we see it just about every day of the year. $500-$1000 or more for the other parts and then get a worthless PSU or get a case that comes with a junk PSU.

Well.... i decided to try something... and well i think it may have worked, i flipped on the onboard GPU and i am using it as a dedicated physx processor.... and i also installed the latest sound drivers... and one of the two seems to have fixed it i haven't locked up in weeks now

That's a good indication that your PSU isn't good enough for a power hungry video card. If it works okay for you the way you have it now and you don't need the other video card that's fine.

lol sorry that came out wrong XD i am using both my 8800gt and the onboard gpu at the same time and i had the nvidia drivers set the onboard to just a dedicated physX processor........ but i honestly belive it was just the sound drivers cause i flipped the onboard off again.... and its been solid for about 3-4 weeks now
