MSI P55 GD65 registers only 4gb of memory.
« on: 18-September-09, 14:22:19 »

To start off here's my system:

CPU: Intel i5 750
Motherboard: MSI P55 GD65
Ram: 4x 2gb G.SKILL Ripjaws DDR3 1600 dual channel memory (8gb total)
Video card: nvidia 9600gt 512mb (temp till new AMD cards)

The bios boot screen states 4gb of DDR3 1333 ram.  Going into bios, it does recognize that 4x2gb sticks are in the system, but still states only 4gb of  ram available.  Booting into Win7 64-bit, the Performance and Information screen states 8gb (3.99gb usable).  Task manager/resource monitor also show only 4gb total.  Essentially, the system knows there's 8gb but will only use 4gb.

I've been told to check for a memory remapping option in the bios, but I've seen no such option so far.

Clear CMOS with main A/C power cable removed from your PSU and load "Optimized Defaults" in BIOS.  Then retest.

If nothing changes, please test each module indivually in the first memory slot.

I have done the following with issues still unresolved:

Edit: Forgot to state BIOS is listed as version 1.2

Cleared CMOS
Loaded Optimized Defaults in BIOS
Installed each individual module in the first memory slot by itself (Correctly reads 2gb)
Installed various combinations of two sticks into slots #1 and #3 for dual-channel configuration (Recognizes the two sticks, but states only 2gb available)

As for the issue of their speed being read at 1333, I noticed enabling X.M.P. sets them to 1600, but still does not fix the other issue.  Is using X.M.P. advisable?

Here is a tinypic of my resource monitor with 8gb installed.  Just like the configuration with 2 sticks in #1/3, it recognizes all of the memory but says only half is available, with the other half listed as "Hardware Reserved."

Updated to bios version 1.3: issue still unresolved.

Resource Monitor and CPU-Z results below:

Once again acknowledging that there are 4 sticks in dual channel setup, but only using 4gb out of the 8gb.

Hi brentap,

Here is a beta BIOS for you.

You can use either the MSI HQ Flasher, or refer to the attached PDF tutorial in making a bootable flash drive.

I flash with beta bios -> Cleared CMOS -> Loaded Optimized Defaults, with the same results as before:

Please let me know if there is any extra step I should be taking.  I really do appreciate the fast response and help.

Oh yes, sorry I didn't mention before.  In bios and during the boot process, it still shows only 4gb of DDR3 1333.

In the CELL menu(I believe that is the menu, I'm at work right now), it does recognize ram in all 4 slots, the same way windows recognizes all the sticks of ram.

Can you try a different processor? Because we had not been able to duplicate the issue you are having.

Most probably something is wrong with the CPU itself or its improperly mounted.
Also check mainboard cpu socket for bent pins.

Success! There was a single pin, slightly pointing in a different direction by about 15 degrees. I carefully realigned it, and all works as it should.  BIOS and Windows 7 are showing correct ram usage.

I can't thank you all enough, this has saved me a lot of trouble dealing with an RMA process.

Hi brentap,

Can you tell us which pin was bent?
Be careful when installing the processor onto the socket because it is very fragile.

Thank you.

I've just been dealing with the same problem.  The BIOS could see 4 slots each filled with a 2GB stick, the same G.Skill memory, but only reported 4Gb installed.  Reseating the CPU solved the problem, but my socket looked just fine.

Same problem here.

Thanks for this thread.

When I removed the socket cover I noticed one of the pins looked bent, but I didn't want to mess with it in case I caused issues (Didn't know how it was supposed to look).

Guess I have a reseating to do, and a pin bending thing to do :\

Took forever to get my motherboard, i am hesitant to rma it...

I have the same problem except widnows say 2GB when there 4 GB installed.(2x2GB). My CPU hasnt been messed with since i installed my heatsink/fan months ago. Is it really likley to be a problem with the cpu needing to be reseated? This sounds more like a bios issue to me, then it does hardware.

For me I noticed the problem after playing with OC Genie pushing my i7 860 to 3.7. I tried to turn OC Genie off and even though the MSI boot screen said OC Genie was off, the CPU remained over clocked. Only clearing coms fixed it.

So this was not a problem until an overclock was introduced?

For you, it may be a BIOS issue. While others share the same end result or symptom, it does not seem to qualify as the same problem in the context of this thread.
Perhaps, your issue was created entirely due to the overclock.
While I think it's not likely, it may be possible that both your overclock and a slightly misaligned pin could be suspect, but I'm leaning toward the overclock or misconfiguration since the reset fixed the problem...

I had problems with my H55 after trying OC Genie and PC crashed. Went into BIOS and set 'Optimized Defaults' and started over again disabling OC Genie while I was at it. Have not had even the smallest problem since. Glad I got the H55-GD65. My RAM shows 2.99 but that's normal for 32 bit OS. As you have now seen that faulty seating or bent pin/wire in the socket of 1156/1366 CPU has been the cause of quite a few RAM problems. Most notably Foxconn sockets.

I have just recently experienced this problem. I built my machine about 3 weeks ago and everything was working great, booted first try and no errors in memtest+ or LinX or Prime95. I have been running just fine since then. I have MSI P55-GD65, Core i5 750, DDR3 2x2GB GSkill Trident 2000MHz RAM.

This past weekend I decided to mildly overclock, I upped the bclk to 160 and adjusted the DIMM voltage to 1.6 according to the RAM spec. I tested and tested this config and everything seemed stable. I have been using the machine to play games and things with no problems.

I go to resume from hibernate this morning and the machine hangs. I restart and I notice BIOS is only showing 2GB during POST. I check out the BIOS settings and it sees the 2 DIMMS, but still only shows 2GB. I boot into Windows 7 x64 and it shows 4GB (2GB Useable). Previously all 4GB were recognized and useable just fine. This may be relevant, I don't know, but I started a long video transcoding job before bed last night. Presumably this job finished and the machine went into hibernate.

I reset all settings back to default, thinking maybe my overclock wasn't as stable as I thought, but no change. Even before I reset the clocks, I tried upping the DIMM voltage, the VTT voltage, reducing RAM frequency. Nothing.

I figure maybe I need to upgrade the BIOS, as I am currently running v1.5 and latest is 1.8. I download the 1.8 image to a flash drive and try to use M-Flash to boot the BIOS image off the drive, but BIOS hangs with a repeating BEEP when I try that.
Then I noticed something very odd. When I boot up with the flash drive plugged into a USB port, BIOS reports 4GB on POST. Without the drive, 2GB on POST.

As an absolute last resort I will reseat the CPU, but after the flash drive behaviour, I am not sure it is a CPU pin-contact issue. When I get home from work I am going to flash to v1.8 BIOS and see if that helps. If not, I will reseat all DIMMS and try that. If the problem persists, I will try DIMMS individually and in different sockets and see.
Is there anything else I should try before reseating the CPU? What if I just wiggle the heatsink? If it all possible, I would like to avoid having to clean up the TIM and reapply, it was a big pain on my heatsink.

Thanks,
--MrAnt--

Hello MSI Community,

I am experiencing the same problem mentioned above and since I cannot seem to find a solution, I open this thread again. I have 2x2GB Corsair XMS3 sticks installed for 2.5 years now.
At the beginning everything was going perfect but about a year ago or so the problem appeared. If I remember correctly, I unmounted my cooler to reapply the thermal paste but when I turned the system on, it was only able to use 2GB although it read 4GB. This didn't happen in single channel.

I just let it,go placing the sticks at single channel and here we are again. Lately I had some lags on my PC and RAM usage increased from time to time. So yesterday I decided to reseat my CPU and check for bent pins. However, everything looked perfectly fine. I double-checked before setting my CPU so that it was perfectly aligned. The BIOS reports 4GB of RAM in POST screen and at the BIOS settings. It can read both sticks and so does every software I have checked through Windows.

I have tested the modules and they work perfectly fine. Back in the time I had tried a BIOS update but didn't fix the problem. I haven't installed any newer version because it seems that updating the BIOS can be quite dangerous. Nonetheless, I will, of course, try a BIOS update if the problem has been fixed.

At the moment I live in Albania and I have no authorized reseller of MSI in my town. The warranty has expired and the m/b was bought in Greece. So RMA is really a very difficult solution.
I feel desperate cause P55 motherboards are so difficult to find currently.

So hasn't this problem been fixed yet?

Thank you in advance for your help. I would appreciate any kind of feedback.
