H55M-E33 Wake from sleep issue
« on: 15-February-10, 10:49:17 »

Hi Everyone,

My HTPC setup is:
  H55M-E33 v1.5 Bios
  4GB G.Skill 1600 2x2GB (F3-12800CL9D-4GBRL)
  Hauppauge WinTV 2250
  Intel I3 540
Windows 7 64 bit with all patches

  Intel 5, 4, 3, 900 chipset drivers v1025
  Intel HD Graphics Driver v2057
  Intel ME v1208

So far so good except when waking from sleeping. I've skimmed the manual, haven't read it cover to cover, looking for this issue. Occassionally, usually while i'm sleeping I'll hear the MB play a few tones repeatedly and eventually quiets. When I subsequently check the PC it's in a wake up/sleep loop. LEDs light up, nothing shows on the screen, and it immediately goes back to sleep, rinse, repeat. I have to hold the power button for a "significant" time until it stops the loop. Then it powers on beautifully.

What is that alarm type chime? Why is it having issues waking? Note that this doesn't happen every time it wakes but this loop is going to upset my HTPC schedules!

Hello,

I have the same issue with my setup :

  H55M-E33 v1.5 Bios
  Intel I5 650
  4GB G.Skill 1333 2x2GB (F3-10600CL9D-ECO)
  Hauppauge WinTV 2200

  Windows 7 32 bit

  Intel chipset drivers v1025
  Intel HD Graphics Driver v2057

I put my HTPC in sleep mode S3, wake up with my remote (Microsoft USB), but after immediately goes back to sleep and  wake up repeatedly.
I try with Windows Vista Home premium 32 bit and it works...

Another strange thing, with Bios v1.3 memory score under Windows 7 was 7.1. With Bios v1.5 the memory score drop to 5.5.

Ps: sorry for my english, i'm french.

For jdivirgilio, try setting your RAM speed to 1333MHz, 2T.

For stephane-m, try setting your RAM speed to 1066MHz, 2T.

To both, please also provide your PSU specs amps.

Your PSU is too weak in the first place. I would suggest a minimum 550watts with at least 35A of +12v combined power. Your PSU at most can only produced approx 28A max for +12v combined.

Do you have the same setup when Vista is installed or you have a slightly different setup?

Nonetheless, different setups can consumed different power levels with the same hardware as it depends if the OS loads the system more than the other.

For the PSU, it is still recommended that you test with a better PSU, just borrow one to test out and see.

Hi,
Well I'm a bit embarrased about one thing..the alarm is my KEYBOARD..stupid thing would wake me up and the machine was in a wake loop.  :bonk:

.I just reinstalled (cleaned again) the OS (Win 7) last night so I need to give it a day. This wake loop was happening every day.

I'm running with a Thermaltake TR2 430W W0070RUC.
+12V/18A

Also the memory is at 1333. In v1.3 I could run it at full speed but in v1.5 when I let it detect 1600 the motherboard powers on but I get nothing on the screen. I let this stay in this state for 5 minutes and no POST. There's power but the memory isn't working at that speed. I was going to start another topic about this issue after I got the sleep loop fixed.

I try with the Seasonic PSU and it's the same. Change HDD with Vista (same drivers release ) and it's OK.

Reinstall the OS. Installed the latest Intel drivers, reinstalled the Hauppauge Win TV drivers...came home from work and it's in the wake up loop again.

This is frustrating. Anyone have any other ideas?

Have you also contacted MSI?  Please also communicate with MSI to get feedback from them as well.

This is an user to user forum so not a high chance that MSI engineers will visit here. I would rather you consult MSI Tech support via the link given by Mike in his post.

I think I've found it . When I disable EIST and C1E it seems to wake fine. I noticed when you set the auto-overclock feature the machine will reboot until it finds a stable clock speed. It doesn't POST during this phase. Well there must be some kind of bug that correlates to that since EIST and C1E deal with speed and volts. Hopefully MSI can now test it and figure something out. I'd hate to have to have those features disabled permanently on a HTPC. It's mostly idle while recording/playing shows.

Do inform MSI directly with your findings and to see if they can reproduce your results.

have you tried to disable the auto-overclock feature and enable IST and C1E?

andre_a,

I wasn't very clear. I don't have the auto-overclock feature enabled and had to disable EIST and C1E to prevent the loop.  Although that failed once so I cranked the voltage on the CPU and memory a bit and it hasn't looped since.

I was just fooling around and noticed that when you set the auto-overclock it behaves like the sleep loop until it finds the "sweet spot" fsb.

Hi,

I was just about to purchase the MSI H55M-E33 and luckily came across this thread before I ordered.  The MB seems ideal, but for this fundamental issue with not being able to wake from S3 properly.

Has anyone had any further news/info.  Is it safe to assume that MSI will release a BIOS fix for this shortly ? Are there any channels to MSI I could use to get some further info, I'm guessing calling tech support about a MB I dont have, won't be so productive

Hey truckid,

I've reported my findings to MSI and here's their response:

"MSI Tech. 02/23/2010 Dear Customer, Will check and get back to you if have a bios update. "

The incident report is in a closed state. I do not know what that means. In their defense they gave me a few things to try prior to this last update; tweak a few BIOS settings, make certain everything you've installed is latest and greatest from drivers to OS to BIOS, disconnect all external USB peripherals. I got the impression that it wasn't very specific to the waking problem. It appeared to me they were telling me to troubleshoot a going to sleep and waking up immediately problem.

This HTPC has been waking from sleep with the voltages bumped up and all the power saving idle features disabled. Of course I don't find that ideal and have expressed my concerns. To be honest I will be replacing this board in the next few months if my issue isn't addressed. I have purchased many MSI products before, specifically graphics cards. This is my first MB. So far not so good for me. Remember though, this is one user's experience. I can't speak for the others out there. Good luck!

I'm looking around for alternatives.

Its a shame as the MSI MB seems to have constantly lowest power consumption figures. Maybe a BIOS update will arrive soon (next few hours/days please...) Abit of an own goal, if  MSI make a decent MB and allow such a fundamental flaw to drag it down. I imagine a BIOS update to resolve the sleep issue isn't that difficult either.

Is this fixed right now? I use S3 alot. I'm planning to get this board with Core i530, 2x2GB Kingston DDR3 1333mhz ValueRAM , Seasonic S12II-330Bronze.

Does everyone here with this issue use G.Skill memory?

I also had this problem.......

Go to "power management" in BIOS...and under "wake up event" disable everything except.....  "BIOS".......and don't change it to "OS".

I also had this issue and disabled a bunch of programs that were possibly making my PC wake up.
Make sure you disable wake up on LAN, wake up on mouse, keyboard etc...

If problem still persists, use the event viewer to determine what is waking up your pc. I found out it was the stupid Windows Media Center waking it up every morning to do an update.
