790FX-Gd70 No Post "FF" Debug Code
« on: 22-February-10, 03:24:46 »

I am building the same system as in profile except im going with DarkKnight instead of V8 for Cooling.

-When i Boot With no memore i get nothing not video no post.

When i boot With memory and Graphics card (5770) i get nothing.

So i slotted my older GPU the XFX Radeon 4850 in and i Get a red L.E.D on the back of the card thats lights up.  It blinks simultaneously with the HHD staus Light and the Debug LED with "FF".

So my question is what does this "FF" code really mean other than initialize CPU.

All Power phase LEDs are Lit up.  But i do not understand the LED on GPU/"FF"/HHD Light blinking all at same time.

Without memory your processor has nothing to do, so things don't work.

Reseat the processor. Do the reseating with motherboard out of the case. Clear CMOS during the work.

Check so all power connections are in place.

No this is there very first boot-up for this MOB.  Havnt even installed BIOS yet.  All Power cables are good.  I am pretty goodat cable management.  Reseating the processor really didnt do anything.  It looked like a pin on the CPU was a little bent up.  COuld that be it?

Fredrik is right: the cpu cannot start without memory. But when you install the cpu without memory and you start the board, the FF should come on ... if it does not, there´s something pretty wrong.

Try the board outside of the computer case on an non-conductive surface with the cpu and one stick of memory only.

(The red led on your graphics card means it doesn´t get the necessarry power to start. 12V connected to the card?)

Well Its a 6Pin PCI-E going to the card.  And when i start it with no RAM i still Get the "FF".
And when i put 1 stick witht he cpu the 'FF'  just blinks on and off with the HHD LED.

Have you tried a different CPU?

Yes, a processor problem it is. If you have the opportunity try this processor in another compatible system, or sort or v.v.

FF means that the cpu cannot start for any reason... damaged, lack of power, no memory, whatever. If the cpu cannot start, FF is shown.

That's not a good idea and really not necessarry at all. Just use a tiny drop - about the size of a pin's head and leave it. No need to change it, it does not lose it's ability to conduct heat.

You only need to keep the heatsink free of dust.
No need to remove it.
Use a small brush and vacuum-cleaner to clean it, works wonders and takes very little time.

Yes.
But bare in mind: not at full speed if you install 4 dimms. AMD CPU's most of the time cannot handle 4 dimms at max. speed, so it will fall back a bit.
Best to go is to install 2x2GB.

Do test ==> >>Memtest86<<
Also apply memory voltage recommended by OCZ for your sticks in BIOS Setup

Memory voltage: do add 0.05V to the voltage specified.
Also, set memory clock and latencies manually.
After doing that, retry.
If things still don't work out, then do the memtest. It's no use testing RAM when the memory settigns are wrong.

Ok thanks guys.

I have to say over the last week you all have been a great help.  My computer didnt post and now it does just can only run on 2GB Ram.

So to get this right:

I have to clrCMOS

Then enter BIOS

And set Memory VOltage +.05

AMD was very fast in sending me a new processor and now i just have this memory error.

Thanks.

If my steps are wrong please post the correct ones :)

Voltage: see specs on the memory stick and set that, but add 0.05V.
Better set memory clock and latencies manually as well.

Perhaps you should consider getting some more appropriate memory? Set memory speed (in MHz) down, if you haven't. You will not not not loose performance, but gain stability, and it will also allow more "freedom" to do "things" with the processor.

Well... it's not too hard, I guess...

You need to enter bios and make the right changes to the memory settings in the Cell Menu.

Look for the timings at your memory modules and write them down.
Then set the voltage in the Cell Menu;
Then set the cpu/ram ratio so that the right memory clock appears (under the menu item where you set this ratio)
Then go to Advanced memory configuration and set the right timings there ...

If you don't know how to do this, refer to your manual or do some reading about memory timings and settings.

Ow, come on!
As I said: READ YOUR MANUAL!!
Your manual is >> here <<.
Now, open it and look at page 3-19 and 3-22.
If you do not find immediately what you are looking for, read on a bit.
I'm not going to explain basic BIOS setup for you when you can easily read about it yourself.

I have the same problem after using AOD autoclock feature killed the cpu the board will not start at all. I press the power button and it shuts off immediately so I disconnected everything and tried starting with the board out same thing then I tried powering up with the cpu power connector disconnected and the board comes on got a replacement cpu coming this Friday hopefully this will solve the problem using v1.9 bios btw

So, going back to the original problem with the No Post and the "FF." Was it the CPU that was faulty?

I just got lost when i eneter all the settings.  But anyways i switched out the RAM for some A-DATA Gaming Series Set at 9-9-9 @ 1.75V and it works fine.

bigrob301, same thing goes for you regarding hijacking.
