Big Bang Marshal B3 motherboard usb 3.0 issue
« on: 20-June-11, 10:02:32 »

As the subject title indicates my issue is with the built-in USB 3.0 ports on this motherboard. I lose all functionality and the system grinds down to a virtual halt until I unplugged the USB 3.0 device which is a external Buffalo 3.0 USB 12 x Blu-ray writer/reader. Unfortunately this is the only USB 3.0 device I own but it works perfectly on another computer which happens to be a MSI AMD motherboard but via a Asus U3S6 USB 3.0+ SATA 6G PCI express card I purchased separately.
It doesn't matter which USB 3.0 port I use, the ones on the motherboard are the ones which are rooted to my PC case , the issue remains the same.
Is anyone else having trouble with the USB 3.0 port on this motherboard?

Any thoughts and help would be much appreciated

When you plug in the device to the port, is there any power it the device?

You can also try clearing CMOS to see if it works.

I definitely have power. I turned the machine off and cleared the BIOS, now I can get into the bios by hitting the delete key! Support recommended me updating to a version 1.1 bios but that seems mute when I can't enters the bios, plus the bios updates had nothing to do with USB connectivity.
I have the latest version of Live update 5  (as opposed to the live online update, which MSI seems to frown on and has never worked on any browser including Explorer anyway), so I thought I would try and update the BIOS through that Windows environment, due to the BIOS being on available, but I keep getting "download fail"when I try after it was then a scan of my configuration? There is an Intel motherboard driver which I think is connected to the Southbridge which is only available via  Live update 5and not on their website for download so I can download it and put it on a USB stick for instance even if I was able to get into the BIOS. Why is there a difference between the website downloads page and the machine program  Live update 5 ?

so to summarise, this brand-new enthusiast motherboard which I have upgraded to Watercooling (didn't have a USB 3.0 device when I tested on air cooling) and is the most expensive motherboard I have ever bought currently will not allow me to update the BIOS in a DOS or Windows environment and MSI support are recommending that if a bios that doesn't specifically deal with my problem doesn't work I should have it repaired, not good enough by any stretch of the imagination!

Trying to flash a BIOS in a Windows environment is big no-no in our opinion as too many instances of failed attempts and at worse, "bricked boards" have been the result. Thats why most mainstream board manufacturers usually have a DOS environment flashing tool.
We strongly recommend that you use the forum flasher if you want to flash the BIOS. >>Use the MSI HQ Forum USB flasher<< This has proven to be 100% percent succesful and is basically foolproof.

Thanks Bernhard, I've calm down now and flashed the bios with the forum flasher but still slow to no USB 3.0 functionality.
I think it's a bad board as MSI support suggests so I'll RMA in the morning if no other Big Bang owners chippin in the mean time.

Shame I like the feature on this board in the short time i got to know it but the Renesas USB 3.0 drivers arn't a patch on the NEC/Marvell USB 3.0 drivers on my add-on PCIe card on my 2nd MSI AMD mobo.

Did you install Renesas USB 3.0 drivers from the 'Other' folder on the Driver/Utility DVD?

I'm not sure if I installed it from the DVD or from the download from the official website, should that make a difference? Anyway see my next post for the latest info.

Success - so far so good after 2 AM brainwave!

I decided to try a fresh installation of Windows 7 64-bit and a spare partition of my system drive and low and behold by doing a "total installer"off the supplied drivers/utility DVD I have complete functionality via USB 3.0 on the on-board ports so far.
I will keep updating the drivers from the website and slowly but surely hopefully reach the same drivers/programs/utilities as the partition that had the issue in the first place so as to see which driver/utility is causing the problem.

the reason I had this brainwave was because the partition with the issue with USB 3.0 was a Universal Restore/migration from my last PC hardware using an Acronis program similar to Windows system prep, restoring to dissimilar hardware in a new build.
This makes me feel that there are some old drivers clashing with the USB functionality. But as the restore was from an Intel X 48 hardware build and this is a Sandy Bridge hardware build I'm surprised that this would be the case?

anyway if anybody knows of a good legacy driver cleaning utility to flush out the old drivers and allow me to reinstall the new drivers using the successful  "total installer" functionality of the MSI drivers/utility DVD then I would be very grateful for the name of such a program and it's success rate in this scenario if known?
This will of course saved me installing hundreds of Windows updates including service Pack 1 and the multiple drivers one by one so as to catch the culprit on this new partition over the next day , so your thoughts are much appreciated.
