870A-G54 vs. 870A-G54 FX
« on: 10-October-11, 15:01:53 »

Hi,

I was wondering if an 870AG54 will support new bulldozers, and now I find that MSI is making such the same mainboard with the same bios, just with black cpu socket, calling it FX, that support new am3+ sockets, and asking 20-30EUR more for such thing..

Any chance to get AM3+ support for "usual" 870A-G54????

We have no idea what the FX means, MSI didn't explain anywhere.

My best guess is that the FX version supports the upcoming FX CPU's too.

I would tend to agree with Bas on that. Out of the box support for FX CPU.

 From MSI specs page:

CPU
64bit AMD® FX, Phenom II X6/X4/X3/X2, Athlon II X4/X3/X2 and Sempron CPU.

Hi,

 Looks like maybe yes.

A bit off: Processors have been 64 bit for close to 15 years now. Why do they keep mentioning it? Are they perhaps holding back on the 128 bit processors.  :undecided:

There are still 32bit CPU's Fred, like the Atom used in the U100 :lol_anim:

Look!

http://event.msi.com/mb/am3+/

Looks like 870-G54 already has AM3+ compatible BIOS... Anyone has the guts to try?? I don't... Sure, you can't test compatibility yet, but does it work?

Yes, but that's on the 870A-G54 (FX) that comes from the factory with the correct BIOS, for the previous 870A-G54's on the market and in use you still need to flash the latest BIOS (7599vHF.zip) for FX Bulldozer support. As a matter of fact they have already removed the 870A-G54 (non FX) from their website

Offelyoff: Thank you, Bas! Didn't know about the Atom. Is that really a processor?!  ;-))

Is this still my pessimistic thinking, that some of Bulldozer processors new features are not available when the motherboard supports them by way of a BIOS update?

You can't, the FX boards have a black socket.
The normal version has a white socket.

But this is all guessing as neither CPU-support lists list any bulldozer CPU, only board specs show FX support for the FX board.

But regulators may not be, as such you may kill the board if you try.
MSI does not make an FX version of the board just because of a socket color.

You have to ask MSI: >>How to contact MSI.<<

We have seen plenty boards blow up in the past when inserting unsupported CPU's.
Just because it works doesn't mean it keeps working.

In case anybody wants to actually know instead of guessing, here is the reply I received from MSI tech support.

MSI Tech.   10/13/2011   Yes, if you update to the latest bios it will support it. The FX boards are just boards that have the necessary bios out of the box.
End User   10/13/2011   Does my regular non (FX) version of this motherboard support the new AMD FX Bulldozer cpu's with the latest bios, 7599vHF?

Was that so hard?

890 or newer, all support FX processors.
The ones below 890, can support FX only if they have (FX) marking.

checked stores again, FX version cost approx the same as non-FX version, so hopefully its not just some marketing move, and MSI will support older MoBos with AM3+ bios's - we are waiting for am3+ support to curent AM3 boards MSI!!  :worship:

at last, bulldozer(FX) CPUs from first reviews is flop so no bother at all att..

I had a long discussion with MSI about this, and they told me it's not a marketing thing.
Therefor I asked Warner to post it as he is MSI.
The difference is the regulators as I expected before.

As for the readme, it simply means they share the same BIOS, the FX and non-FX boards.

Pardon? You mean not without LiveUpdate.

Here is your BIOS: http://download2.msi.com/files/downloads/bos_exe/mb/7599vHx/7599vHF/A7599AMS.HF0

Same servers as LiveUpdate uses.

That is absolutely wonderful news! Here I am hanging on to my 870A-G54 for several months because MSI's previous BD compatible webpage stated it would work with BD and a bios update. Then they do the switcheroo and only the new ones with the (FX) label will work now!  On top of that their online tech support gave me a different answer saying it would work? MSI get your crap together. Looks like it's Intel for me now!  o_0

Mind you language please.

In case you don't get it, the FX versions can run the FX bulldozer.
The non-FX versions will run the bulldozer except the FX-model.

Language...are you kidding me?

And now you throw another monkey wrench in there and say the non FX cpu's will work when clearly MSI mentioned no previous distinction. We keep getting different answers ever day!  :cheesy:

They all look like FX's to me unless you know something the rest of us don't know? I don't think your helping...

You have 2 versions of the Bulldozer, the normal and the FX version.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bulldozer_%28processor%29
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_future_AMD_microprocessors

Unless they have changed plans again.
And as far as I understand the puzzling AMD strategy they will release the non-FX versions AFTER the FX versions.

probably there was tendency from MSI to make it work, but there will be probably some serious trouble like regulators(as mentioned above),thats just progress.. or poor marketing strategy to make another money, shame on you MSI

Motherboard manufactuers have very little time for test and construction with new processors. Same as you as a user have little time for waiting.  ;-))

global site saying something different

http://www.msi.com/product/mb/870A-G54.html#/?div=CPUSupport

after some research VRMs are too weak on these boards so puting FX cpus in would be pretty risky

They are supposed to be more efficient requiring less power according to press release from AMD. Don't understand how the lowly 4100 at only 95 watts would be too power hungry.  Then again AMD flat out over-hyped this product to begin with.

I guess it depends on what socket you use for your 870A-G54
Currently I have the one with AM3 socket and I don't think it can be fit with the AM3+ Bulldozer. If your socket is AM3b then you may stand a chance.

I was always under the impression you needed a dedicated AM3+ board for the new CPU's regardless, so I was stumped with MSI's release of the new FX capable bios.  Too much contradictory information from MSI direct and tech support, each saying something different.  I say don't chance it since the AM3+ CPU's were never designed to be backwards compatible.

If you have the non FX version of the 870A-G54 it will not be compatible. Not saying it won't boot but more than likely it will eventually kill the mobo and or the processor due to the older vram's. That is what I'm insinuating from the lack of formal responses from MSI and or the admins in the know on this forum. Quite sad actually, not getting straight answers from MSI as BD has been out for a couple weeks...I've since sold my 870A-G54 motherboard/720BE cpu and went with Intel so good luck to the rest of you as I will probably be banned after this post!
