K9N2 Plat MS-7374 bios 3.9 cpu question
« on: 13-November-11, 16:30:29 »

thinking about one last cpu for this board , on the cpu lists and links here I only notice upto 3.8 bios listed , does the 3.9 bios allow for the PhenomII 970 chip , I have tried and can't seeem to find it anywhere. In fact the mb itself no longer shows up on  the US site , I have to follow the links here to get any info on this board anymore.

An SSD disk would be a better upgrade, I think.
And I keep forgetting things - Never get old! That processor isn't that AM3, which your motherboard is not?

And when do you notice lack of performance? I notice a Maxtor hard disk and a lot of Logitech things. Both can impair on performance.

yes . but motherboard is able to run other "am3" chips and was marketed as "am3 ready" .... thought about ssd , but was wanting to avoid full reinstall of windows until next build , cause i am getting old as well and no longer seem to have the patience to wipe and reload like i used to.

also sticky link to cpu list seems broken , keep getting 404 error when clicking on it

I know the 3.8 bios brought support for the PhenomIIx6 chips which are AM3 as well , but can't find any info on the 3.9 bios other than its download link and release date

edit .. no longer use maxtor as boot/system drive , upgraded to WD black (changed sig to update)

not really noticing perfomance decline , just want to run some newer games that are cpu intensive and trying to put off new build until I see the next Intel chips come out , pretty much done with amd cpu's for now , sad to say , but with bulldozer price/perfomance has gone down.

Noticed in your 'edit' a new WD HDD is now in service, but here is a thought for maybe the future. You could clone your OS over to an SSD probably using a utility like EASEUS.

 Which 970, Deneb or Zosma?

Deneb is the same specs as z955/z965 just slightly faster. Zosma is Thuban w/2 disabled cores, either one should work with BIOS 3.8 and later even though not listed. You could probably get the same performance increase by OC'ing yours a little more and not pay a dime. A speed increase of only 100-200MHz will not improve performance enough to warrant spending that amount of money.

If you wish to confirm compatibility just ask MSI.  >> How to contact MSI <<

You can easily find your MB on the MSI Global website. Bookmark this for future reference:

  http://www.msi.com/product/mb/K9N2-SLI-Platinum---K9N2-Zilent.html#/?div=Overview

As far as cloning goes you can also get Acronis from WD website for use on their HDD's. As long as you have at least one WD drive in the cloning process you can use it.

just what i wanted to know ,
I know only 100-200 mhz isnt that much , but i have pushed this cpu hard for a long time now , and while i plan out my new rig , 130 bucks for a stock 3.7ghz processor isnt a bad shot to buy a little time until i get all the parts for the new rig.

was not aware that there are deneb and zosma chips , hmmm , have to do some research now to see which is better

never thought about cloning , but would assume that i would need to uninstall lots of programs and move data files like photos and music off drive so that i could get the size of the hdd down to about 150 gb , cause the 512gb ssd are way too much

and thanks for the input . its always great to be able to come here and get quick and reliable help!!
