H67MA-E45 boot freeze with code 92
« on: 17-November-11, 02:27:08 »

Hello,

I am experiencing issues when booting my HTPC.
I have just upgraded my system from Clarkdale to Sandy Bridge with the following configuration:

MB: H67MA-E45 (1C BIOS version)
CPU: i3-2100
GPU: Sapphire Radeon HD 6670
RAM: DDR3-1333 Geil 8GB
HDD: SSD Intel X25-M G2 80GB (system)
HDD: Samsung F1 Spinpoint 500GB (storage)
PSU: Antec EarthWatts 430W
OS: Windows 7 x64 Home Premium
Case: Antec Fusion Remote Black with LCD Display connected to MB via internal USB
TV Panasonic 37" Full HD via HDMI

When booting from power off is successful (this is not always the case), boot sequence dispayed on the screen is:
Beep B4 - 99 - 92 - A2 - A3 - BIOS screen - windows

When rebooting, it stops to 92 (AMI bios: "PCI Bus initialization is started"), and freezes. No possibility to enter BIOS setup

The cause of the bios freeze at '92' code seems to be linked to LCD display. When disconnected to MB, the PC just boots fine.
If connected, the PC freezes every time at reboot and sometimes at 'cold'boot.

LCD display seems not to be broken as when PC boots up fine with LCD disconnected and then LCD is reconnected when Windows 7 started, the LCD starts up and PC works fine. This proves that LCD display is not broken and works fine.

I cleared the BIOS, but without any success. Problem still occurs.
I have also deactivated any USB boot option so that the PC can only boot onto the SSD.
I have connected the LCD display USB entry to other USB internal/external ports, without success.
I have tried with only one RAM module (and specifically from the list of supported RAM) without success.
With my previous MB (Gigabyte H55M-UD2H), I did not experience any issue.

The Shop where I bought it refuses any RMA as this cannot be reproduced regularly.

Could someone help me on this? Did I miss something?
Thanks already for your input.

What are the rated +12V amps on this PSU?

HU16E,

Thanks for your answer.
However, could you please explain what you mean by "rated +12V amps"? I am far from being an expert In PSUs...
Where can I check what you ask and how?
I would like to stress that I do not experience any issue with Gigabyte H55MA-UD2H MB.

Thanks again,

Should be a label on the PSU that has that information on it. Different systems will have different power requirements.

here is the answer

12V1 = 17A (CPU)
12V2 = 16A (MB, peripherals)

That's the one I have for 3 years now and was not showing any problems with my previous configuration based on Clarkdale:
MB: Gigabyte H55M-UD2H with i3-540 and no dedicated graphic card (onboard intel HD Graphics used)

Note that I have the same booting issue without Graphic card (using onboard HD2000 Graphics)

I have checked from the link below the PSU wattage I would need with my config.

http://www.extreme.outervision.com/PSUEngine

I come up with 280W.

Should this not be enough?

It is not the total system wattage that is the critical factor, its the amps on the 12V rail.
At this point, if you remove the GPU and the system boots fine with the onboard graphics, but it shuts down with the discrete card in place, then the PSU is not up to the task.
You should consider a single rail PSU with ~30A on the 12V rail, i.e. Corsair CX500 would be sufficient.
Continue to stress your PSU everytime you start your system could potentially cause a PSU failure which may affect other parts of your system.
Test with a PSU of enough ampage..

Thanks for your answer. I will try that.
However, if there is PSU failure, shouldn't it boot at all? In this case, the booting problem does not occur each time.
Secondly, I have already tried with onboard graphics and this still does not boot up.

Cheers.

Did you remove the 6670 GPU when you tested ?

We are not saying the PSU has failed, what is probably happening, is that the Over Current Protection activates and the PSU shuts down.

If it is an intermittent problem, then it could be other factors as well, which will need further analysis.
With so many components connected, it could be a number of things.
You can of course start by only connecting the bare minimum.
only 1 RAM module in the slot closest to the CPU. Disconnect the SSD and only leave the HDD connected. Remove the GPU.
Then start the system and see if you can get into the BIOS. Shutdown and restart a couple of times to see if it will get to the BIOS consistently.

I would however try and get a strong PSU from a friend or family member and test that as well to check the behaviour.
PSUs loose approx 5 to 10% of their efficiency per year, depending on usage. So after three years the output is not what the specs state anymore.

Hi, brother-in-misfortune!
I asked that here yet, but no one answered https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=152280.0
Eventually, I've struggled that problem out myself.
Here I go, listen. You've to set in BIOS:
USB controller - Enabled
USB Legacy Support - Enabled
Onboard USB 3.0 Controller - Disabled
Then, connect iMON to USB Port. The system must boot up and work.
But, you'll be able enter to the BIOS only by pressing F11 instead DEL. And, of course, the USB 3.0 feature won't be available for you.
Best regards!

Hello!

some news about my problem. Not solved yet...

I have tried with a coolmaster silent pro M600. Same problem, cannot reboot
I have tried with a minimal config (one RAM mdule, no GPU, nothing connected except my LCD display (soungraph) and SSD, still no reboot
I have tried to boot with only SSD, same issue, I can boot when PSU is switched off and then on but not boot after switching off PC without switching off PSU.
I have tried to disable USB 3.0 in the BIOS, no reboot.
I really think the LCD display is the key. I cannot reboot if this is connected to internal USB connector.

I am really running out of ideas, eager to hear yours!

Thanks already,

I have a HTPC with a Antec Fusion Remote Black case and an in-built LCD Display (VERIS from Soundgraph) connected to MB via internal USB connector.
The cause of the bios freeze at '92' code seems to be linked to this LCD display. When disconnected to MB, the PC just boots fine.
If connected, the PC freezes every time at reboot and sometimes at 'cold' boot.

LCD display seems not to be broken as when PC boots up fine with LCD disconnected and then LCD is reconnected when Windows 7 started, the LCD starts up and PC works fine. This proves that LCD display is not broken and works fine.

I believe it is something to do with BIOS settings.
I got the same MB and the same iMON. I had the same problem like you. It stopped at 92 while my PC try to boot up.
But, I get into the BIOS settings trying different parameters and now it works.
I would like to help you if I knew how.

I created an account just to be able to post a possible solution:

I have a Z68A-GD55 series board. I got the same "frozen 92" in the lower right-hand corner. After seeing some of the posts about the USB, I tried unplugging every USB device that was connected to my computer. Once I did that, it booted up just fine. In some cases, I have seen PC's fail to boot because of a USB flash drive connected to them at the time. The same can be said for any USB device. Just thought I would throw this out there before anyone else goes removing PSU's or GPU's.

This is a year old post that the OP solved.

He didn't mention if he tried a new moniter and it worked fine, but since he didn't follow up I assume he got to the bottom of everything.

I recently have replaced my H67MA-E45 to the same another because of first one has become dead.
But the problem mentioned above still persists. Yes, at last I solved it by some way. But, as a result, USB 3.0 has to be in unable state all the time.
Is is not quite good, I suppose. So I think it would be really grate for users if manufactorer have done something with firmware or anything else for completly eliminate this problem concerned conflict the MB with USB devices at booting up process.
Best wishes.
