GX620 - finding recovery media
« on: 30-November-11, 12:02:11 »

Hi everyone,

I have a gx620 whose hard disk has been accidentally wiped clean (recovery partition included), and no recovery discs!    :nooo:

Two questions:
- could I restore the system using someone else's recovery DVDs (for this model or a similar one)?
- is someone willing to pass disc images to me?

Thanks a lot!

Download the version that matches your sticker at the bottom.
You can download the drivers and utils from www.msi.com

Thanks for the reply... but I should have said, the machine is from 2009 and came with Vista Home Premium, not Win7. I don't know of any such downloadable installer for Vista.

To be precise, I've tried installing from a Vista OEM DVD that a friend gave me - but it was from Dell, and didn't accept my license key. So I suppose different manufacturers use different keys.

Download a clean generic OEM Vista Home Premium DVD from a torrent site (ie one without any 'cracks' or modifications), and as long as you use your genuine product key, you'll stay legal.

The problem is, I can't seem to find any source for such an OEM DVD, for download or otherwise. All I've found was the DELL DVD I mentioned above. I have seen no functioning torrent. There are plenty of ways to download cracked, completely illegal copies of Vista Ultimate 64bit and the like, but no simple Vista Home Premium OEM 32bit. Of course, I need that specific version, since that is what my license is for.

Request: Vista system restore DVD image

Hi everyone,

This is a call to anyone who has system restore DVDs for a Windows Vista notebook. Can you please help me by sharing DVD images with me?

As I explained in this previous post, I need to restore the system on my gx620 but I have lost all recovery media. I tried following suggestions to find OEM install discs, but could find nothing that worked.

I have a Vista license for this machine, and I'd just like to use it.

Thanks a lot to anyone willing and able to help: I'll arrange an easy and painless way to share the images.

Use qbit-torrent and type the word VISTA to download the DVD you need.

Merged topics, as there was no need to start a new one.

Yes, well, it would take a night. Maybe two...

It is true that filesharing services have various versions, including Vista Home Premium - only it is the retail version, not OEM. I suppose that is fine for people who intend to crack it in some way, but it doesn't help me with my OEM license... I'm pretty sure it won't work with anything but the OEM version.

As usual, trying to do things legally is the hardest way. Thanks to MSI for not making any version of the bundled OS available in any form, and incidentally, not replying to my support request about this.

Follow-up: MSI has replied to my support request and told me to call customer service: apparently there is a way to order recovery discs from them. I'll post an update when I get a chance to call them.

Final update: The tech support will ship me recovery discs for 25$, which I suppose is fair given that they handle this on a case-by-case basis, and they probably want to discourage it. That's the price I pay for being careless about keeping my own recovery media.

Linzer, this may be only an option in the USA and maybe Canada.  Not sure about the rest of the Globe as this forum serves all nations.

At least, I know it is also an option in France : that's where I live, so I first talked to tech support here. They then directed me to the US service, because I bought my notebook in the US.

So I assume that you can do that in all countries where they have a large market. And in smaller countries, there may be a way to ask for tech support from MSI people in the nearest large country? E.g. maybe users in Armenia can ask these things from the Russian branch.

Trust me I tried, they refuse.

Sure, but isn't that because they have customer services in Europe?

Not if they have stuff that isn't sold in Europe, like a Windpad 110W docking.
Also MSI Europe doesn't deal with customers directly when it comes to parts, only Warranty services for complete systems.
But you have a license sticker so reinstalling for scratch isn't much of a problem, I have done it numerous times.
As recovery is typical old and outdated anyway.

MSI USA isn't going to ship to Europe or any other country except the USA, and likely Canada.  I hope I'm wrong--maybe with a notebook they will--not sure.
