MSI U135DX / MS N014 ram confusion
« on: 02-June-12, 18:19:15 »

Hello,

I've read a few other posts on here regarding problems with upgrading the ram for the U135DX as the specs for the netbook state it takes DDR3 ram and memory checks come back as DDR2.

I bought this netbook 2nd hand a couple of weeks ago and as it comes with 1gb of ram and can be upgraded to 2gb I thought I may as well do it, this is when it all got confusing.

The specs on a sticker on the netbook and on the MSI site state

CPU - Atom N455
RAM - DDR3 1gb
HDD - 250gb

Have checked the processor and hard drive and the sticker / specs on site all match up.

I went on Orca.com and did a memory scan and it said this netbook is an MS-N014 whitebook and  takes DDR2 ram.

The processor for the N014 whitebook is an N450 but mine is an N455 - as the specs of the U135DX show.

I hope all the above made sense, I just need to know which ram to buy to upgrade, am starting to wonder if I have some sort of hybrid crossover netbook lol.

I've read the post about giving all system info but am getting a bit confused, been going round in circles for hours so if more info is needed please let me know.

Thanks for reading  :)

Cheryl

U135: Intel Atom N450 CPU, DDR2 RAM (max 2gb):
http://eu.msi.com/product/nb/U135.html#/?div=Specification

U135DX: Intel Atom N455/N550 CPU, DDR3 RAM (max 2gb):
http://eu.msi.com/product/nb/U135DX.html#/?div=Specification

Hope that clears that up for you! :hat tip:

Hi Stu,

Thanks for the reply, problem is I seem have a U135DX with an N455 processor that says it takes DDR2 ram, all the specs match up for the U135DX apart from the ram?

Thanks

Ignore that Orca utility, it is giving you false information.

I have a U135DX myself, it has a Atom N455 CPU, and takes DDR3 RAM.

I tried another memory checker too which came up with DDR2 as well, this is the post that got me all confused

These tools are no substitute for physically inspecting the product yourself.

The U135 and U135DX share the same model number, MS-N014, which is what these tools read, and so incorrectly in this case, are giving you details for the U135.

If you have a U135DX, then it needs DDR3 RAM.

Hi Stu,

Thank you for your help with this, I think I just ended up confusing myself more by looking online!

Will get the DDR3 ram  :)

A word of warning: 1GB of RAM is already installed on the mainboard itself, I just tried a 2GB DDR3 stick out my Windpad, and the U135DX wouldn't start up.

So I would advise you to buy a 1GB stick only.
