Boot Configuration Data missing information BSOD
« on: 18-September-13, 20:43:33 »

Hi guys,
I got the MSI GE40-2OC 009 for college. Up until a few nights ago when I was working on my homework, it was working fine. However, the next day, when I turned it on, I got this message:

""
Your PC needs to be repaired.

The Boot Configuration Data file is missing some required information.

File:\BCD
Error code: 0xc0000034

You'll need to use the recovery tools on your installation media. If you don't have any installation media (like a disc or USB device), contact your system administrator or PC manufacturer.
"""

I sent a message to MSI online support and received this message back:
"please perform the system recovery process by using your recovery disc or F3 method and retest afterwards to see if same problem still persists."
However, I don't have a recovery disk and do not want to lose any files on my laptop.

What can I do to save my data and fix the error?

Thanks!

The boot order priorities seems to be fine. I'm running Windows 8.
The laptop was running fine the night before, and I didn't modify anything during that time.

Have you tried the automatic repair option via F3? Also fixing via command line prompt might work if F3 gives you that option.

I think F3 recovery deletes all my files. I'm trying to boot Ubuntu from USB right now and transfer my files onto an external drive.

Yup. zipper.sippola is correct.

Most likely the BCD got fubared somehow. It happens, no one knows why. Either way, if you rebuild it, it should boot into Windows just fine like nothing happened.

Yep. I got it corrupted the first day before I had turned the system properties protection on and before making backups. That's it - was time to put a SSD in and do a fresh install. And get rid of GPT partitions and UEFI - rather keep the control in my own hands.

I reinstalled Windows 8 from my friend's USB, and all my data is still here. However, I think a lot of my installed programs and drivers are gone, and my laptop can't even detect my wireless card in Device Manager. Does anyone know which driver(s) I need to download?

All the drivers should be there, if you select the right OS.
