MSI 970a G46 - Bios issues
« on: 07-December-13, 22:39:13 »

After recently replacing my ssd (had the same on before old one died from physical damage) and psu I cannot install windows 8.

I get to the prepairing devices phase and it stops close to 100% and goes to a black screen. I'm assuming this is the phase where the boards peripheral controllers ect are prepped and something is not finishing.
So I tried to use the live update feature via the utility disc the board came with, it begins checking and fails at the second phase;
"Warning: could not find suitable bios rom"

I thought maybe this was because it has the most current version. I looked up my board on the site, and the only thin I get for a download is the live update 5 program, which is meant to run in the windows enviroment not pre installation.

I downloaded the live update program onto another computer and went through the program files and to no avail....cannot find a bios revision file name or anything in the program.

The bios appears to no be obtainable other than through live update which is failing.....

Anyone here know where I can pull just the bios from to put it on a stick and use the m-flash utility?

Thanks

It is E7693AMF V2.0
I'm just not seeing where I can pull that from to use in the utility in the current bios to get it going on the install. or at least isolate that it is not the bios rev.

Basically the same issues, if you look at the instructions for that file it is to be run in windows.....not with the mflash.
I get the latest one for my boar don the flash drive, goto mflash and it says "there isn't a bootable file in this USB key root"
So I formatted the flash drive (to fat32) and put the extracted file onto the flash drive. Same message.....
Ive built afew msi systems and have never had to flash the bios.

Read further and found another article that sounds rather extreme in terms of simply updating the bios.

Feeling very noob ish here ATM....

the .exe file is not only for windows, you can run it from pure DOS as well,
see here for guide: http://www.msi.com/files/pdf/Bios_update_SOPAll.pdf
and its not for M-flash

So I believe I've isolated it to the board. I could not get the bios exe to be seen on the drive using the msi articles...ended up using the hp USB utility and after this could see the exe (7693v26). Then tells me the board does not support this tool.
Tried v2.2-v2.6 with the same message;

Is this from a bad job on my part creating the bootable USB drive or could it just be the board? This about as deep as I've delved into bios updating...
I've gone over multiple articles on creating the bootable USB and updating the bios and am confident I've followed the instructions.

Any thoughts here would be appreciated, Ild rather just buy a new board than rma it as the turn around would prob be insane this time of year.

Thats was my initial thought as well. They are the correct updates, sn 601-7693-020b1301083471, 970a-g46

http://www.msi.com/product/mb/970A-G46.html#/?div=BIOS

I've checked the board physically as we'll, very strange.

After trying all the updates in series 2.2 up to current I gave installing the OS another shot out of curiosity and it again stops at 85% of preparing devices phase, just goes to a black blank screen with no activity even after leaving it for about an hour.

im not convinced, if it was the right one, DOS .exe will not complain about not supported system
based on S/N listed, for 02S, 1.xx are correct updated, not 2.xx biosses.

and you still didnt say what is your current BIOS version installed,
you can check this in BIOS Setup, System Info.

The bios came with 2.0 which is what I am on now.
I will try to be more concise.
Board : 970a-g46
Stock factory bios version : 2.0
Bios versions used in update attempts: 2.2,  2.3,  2.4,  2.5 , 2.6
This board: http://www.msi.com/product/mb/970A-G46.html#/?div=BIOS

I've attempted tech support several times but am striking out with seasonal highers...I just feel like this can be fixed, the bios operates well (other than odd temp readings) .

Here's how I have updated every bios since 1.1 (all of the 2.x UEFIs in sequence up to the current 2.6):

https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=174277.0

No problems whatever.  Remember that your FAT32 USB device (mine is a SanDisk with a removable floppy) also has to be bootable (or, at least, mine is.)  Hope this helps.  I've rarely used an easier, more pain-free method, I have to say.

My guess is that 2.6 may be it for the 970a-G46, though, unless AMD ships a new AM3+ cpu sometime soon.
