MSI R9 270x 2g gaming - artifacts in games
« on: 01-March-14, 18:12:50 »

Hi!
Like 2 weeks ago I bought whole new PC with r9 270x msi gaming 2g, I tried 4 games on this PC,  unfortunatelly in all games happened artifacts, no idea if its matter of optimalization of game or the drivers are still not good enough for all games or my card is defected...

The 4 games i tried to run are Guild Wars 2 , Battlefield 3 multiplayer and TERA:Rising, The Elder Scrolls Online. Artifacts are the worst in GW2, in other  games are not that annyoing, but still.... They start to show up randomly, sometime after 5 mins, other day after 30mins or 1hour. In TERA it happens not that often like in  GW2 tho.
Here are few screens from GW2 how it looks

In TERA i saw flashy blinking objects like trees or  white rocks like on my pic, red dot on chat is actually my fail of paint skill :s.

When i minimize game and then turn game again on fullscreen, the artifacts are gone and do not happen on desktop.

Is my bios the latest?

VRM Temperature in idle 38*C
During gaming my temperatures arent higher than 60, sometime 70*C. I didn't OC'ed my card or other components.
If i need to change bios and that would help please give me a guide for dummies ^^ never changed bios or vbios before ^^.

S/N of my card : 602-V303-13SB1312019731

Other parts of my PC:
Intel i5 4570
ASRock B85 Pro4
2x 4GB Crucial Ballistix Sport 1333MHz
XFX Pro Series 550W PSU 80+
Windows 7 64bit

I've ran Kombustor for about 15minutes, saw no flickering or artifacts tho.

I tried 13,101 and 14,1 betas Catalysts but didnt used driver sweeper, should I give it a try?

If there are people around who had artifacting problems with r9 200 series and fixed it, would be nice if will speak here ^^.

Sorry if I made a mistakes, English is not my first language :P.

we can't tell without the actual vbios. A GPU-Z screenshot is useless. Save the vbios to file, upload it to some filehoster and add link here.

Vbios is latest already (TV303MH.102). Try removing current amd driver in safemode using >>Driver Fusion<<. After reboot install latest MSI driver: http://download.msi.com/dvr_exe/AMD_13101_78_vga.zip

Also update the Asrock board's bios to the latest version.

I deleted amd driver in safemode using Driver Fusion. After reboot I tried to install the MSI driver that you linked me, after installing it, my CCC didn't run, i was getting error saying :" You can not run the Catalyst Control Center. At this time in the Catalyst Control Center no settings that you can configure". Still I tried to test any game, went to Guild Wars 2, but after few minutes artifacts happened,  like on the screen I posted.  Then I deleted drivers again and went to install amd catalyst 14,2 v1.3 beta, here CCC was working without problems, but still after some playing in Guild Wars 2, I had artifacts.....

About motherboard bios is up to date as I saw.

Is there anything I can still try? Or theres nothing left than sending my card back? I am only scared, that if I send my card to the shop I bought , they might not find any problem, as I said, it not always happen in same minute of gameplay... Can I contact straight to MSI Poland so they maybe make any experienced way diagnosis?

run memtest86 and check for mem errors. Also run attached IntelBurn Test on maximum stress level to check for general stability besides vga.

For contacting MSi you can do so: >>How to contact MSI.<<. None the less rma has to be issued via the reseller.

Hi! Wasn't able to try memtest and IntelBurn in last days, today I tried it, memtest 2 passes 0errors, haven't tried more.  This took around 2 hours
I did Intel Burn aswell, 10 tries(not sure how much tries should I set, on the internet i've read 5-20 tries is enough (?) ), stress level max with all threads, thats are right options to do it?
Results were 3.079271e-002  so CPU seems to be stable.

I think I will run 3dmark 2013 also, to check if I get artifacts. I did 3dmark 2013 , my results:
http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/2618832

Any other ideas? Should I try newest drivers from AMD, or wait for MSI driver for this card, any info when they will release something new? or my last way is just RMA card and hope for new one or for getting my money back?

I did Valley Benchmark also....

Artifacts occured after like 5-10 mins running in benchmark on extreme hd options..... It happened in round2 of benchmark. In round 1 nothing happened...

Do I got anything left than sending back my card to shop where I bought it?

K I marked the places where you can see artifacts, (white stuff on hills, looks similiar to GW2 case)  white lines lengthening

Other screen without artifact to see diffrence

Was hard to catch at screens, probably video would show it better.

Unfortunatelly nope, can't test other GPU or PSU. This only happens in games / benchmarks, on desktop everything is fine. For me it seems more like defective GPU, like I said, artifacts are gone when I minimize game and put it back on fullscreen, then I got some minutes of gameplay without this weird problem.

well then you have limited options,
RMA the VGA and see how its goes, but if the problem is not in the card the problem will persist.

Yes, I think I will RMA this card at first. My CPU got integrated graphics so I will be still able to use my computer and hope for just faulty of GPU.
I would prefer to get money back, so I am thinking to go with "green side" this time, saw too much problems with whole R9 series...

Hey!
I am refreshing because I found something interesting, I hope this will help to find issue with what's going on, as I still didn't contacted with shop. I did full format and installed Windows 8.1 Pro x64. I've tried to install  MSI Graphics Driver 13.101 from MSI site, after extracting it and installing, CCC didn't work, I was getting error saying :" You can not run the Catalyst Control Center. At this time in the Catalyst Control Center, no settings that you can configure" I was getting same thing on Windows 7 x64, so I guess that's something wrong with MSI files, I did some searching and I found that this error can be caused because corrupted files. Is there any other way to get MSI Drivers from other links or so? Would appreciate it to try it out.
After that, I uninstalled this MSI 13,101 and installed AMD 13.12 without problems. Then I ran Valley Benchmarks again, here I noticed something, my vsync was turned off and these strange problems like in last screens I posted still occured. After turning on VSYNC in valley benchmark, it seems like my problems stopped. Then I tried same in Guild Wars 2, seems like it working aswell, was running for around 1 hour for 2 days without problems.  I believe it should work without vsync, shouldn't it? Playing with vsync is always the way, but it reduces my frames by alot....

What you guys think about that?  Someone got any idea whats happening? Might this be still defective card or it's just problems with software of game or drivers? Or maybe its something with GPU and my monitor? If so, my monitor is : LG IPS LED 22EA53.

I don't know what to do now, hope you will help fix it out, as im not sure now if I should still think about sending back my card?....

I've played Need For Speed Rivals, it just uses 30% of gpu as I saw, due to fps limit in game (30) and still shows up artifacts. Guess I'll send card for RMA in 2 days, or still someone have any idea whats going on? Card is not overheating btw.
