MSI Z97 no post, no boot
« on: 14-August-15, 16:27:54 »

Hello everyone, today I just built my first pc with an MSI Z97 motherboard and an i5 4690k. However, my computer does not post nor boot; my monitor does not pick up any signal. The motherboard still lights up as does the graphics card, case fans and cpu fan. Even after I take out all of the RAM my motherboard does not beep at all and nothing shows up on my monitor (i've tried two monitors). Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Please follow >>Posting Guide<<

With no RAM there won't be any signal.
Is it inside the case already?
Do you have a speaker connected to JFP2?

Do follow the posting guide, it helps a whole lot.
Have tried removing the video card and using the integrated graphics on the CPU?

How do you expect to hear any beeps then?

Try clearing CMOS first, >>Clear CMOS Guide<<.

If still no go, take it all out and bench test it, on non-conductive surface like wood or cardboard (no static bags), with minimal setup, no graphic card and just 1 memory module (try slot 2 first then slot 4), and only keyboard connected.

Your system specs in your signature please.

Read the posting guide and provide info requested. See my signature below for example of info to list. There are 14 Z97 MSI MBs, which one do you have? We can't help if you don't provide complete list of hardware you have and please provide brand names including model and/or part numbers.

Remove it from the case and test on a sheet of plain cardboard cut from a box. Don't put it in a case until you have it running OK after testing outside the case.

Ok guys, I updated my signature and I'm about to test the motherboard outside of the case. Also, the debug code on my motherboard says 00 btw and the front power LED doesn't turn on although the switch does work.

I tried resetting the cmos by pulling out that battery and shorting it but nothing happened. I'm going to try to start it out of the case. Also, could it be by any chance that my cpu isn't compatible with the bios version that's installed on my Z97? I read in some other threads where people were having problems with that. Thanks for all the support so far guys!

CPU 100% compatible with the board, there a chance for bent pins, we will get to that after other tests exhausted,

Hello again everyone, it turns out I forgot to plug something in. Now the power LED which wasn't working before is on now and there is a debug code, it stays at 39 and sometimes move up to 40 but instantly goes back down to 39. I tried searching up its meaning but nothing came up. Anymore help would be greatly appreciated, and thanks for all of the previous support.

39 = Post-Memory North Bridge initialization (North Bridge module specific) <--- if I'm not mistaken the north bridge is on the CPU

Yeah, I just read that in the mobo manual but the thing is that the number keeps fluctuating going up to 40 and back down to 39, so could it possibly be the idle temp of the cpu?

I'm pretty sure the motherboard runs through all of the debug codes and now the fluctuating 39 is the temp of the cpu, so I think it's running fine. However, I still don't receive any vga signal on my monitor.

with a graphics card in most boards it disables the onboard so try the outputs on your GTX 970 as a PCI-E graphics device is in 99% of cases more powerful and it automatically thinks you would want to use that instead automatically!
