MSI GTX 970 fan issue
« on: 25-September-14, 16:33:53 »

I currently have a MSI GTX 970 and I have an issue with the fans.

Sometimes, both fans don't even operate resulting in high temperatures on idle, like 60C. Though the fans will kick in while gaming.

Secondly, while gaming, even when the temperatures aren't even high, the fan becomes really loud and gets stuck at a high RPM, even when I quit, the second fan will continue to spin loudly and I don't know how to stop it, which is really annoying.

Does anybody know how to solve these issues?

Hi,

I am not quite sure, but as far as I know, the fans will be OFF until the temp reaches 65*C :)

It is normal for GTX 970 Gaming to not spin the fan in 2D (semi-passive cooling). 60°C under this condition is excellent and not a high temp anyway.

Also it is normal for the Gaming cards to control the two fans independently of each other. Still it should stop somehow. At what temp is the card when fan keeps spinning after 3d load is no longer present?

My brother has experienced the exact same thing as TS. He was playing Age of Wonders III for a while, like 1,5 hours and all of the sudden the fans were spinning up loudly and after he quit the game the fans were still spinning at the same high rpm. He had to perform a full shutdown to make the fans stop spinning.

He is using the latest 344.16 WHQL drivers.

Yesterday when he had the 344.16 Beta drivers he wasn't experiencing this problem so it might be driver related but I'm not sure.

Any one else having this same problem?

well, retry with driver and see if it is the problem. If that is the case problem could be addressed.

Similar issue here. Secondary fan stays at what sounds like max speed while the main fan turns off because the GPU itself is cool - continues at max speed through a reboot, only solution is a complete shutdown.. Has happened 2 days in a row with Guild Wars 2.

So, it doesn't look like a single event because three people are having the similar problem.

The question now is, what to do about it?

I would give a try at Afterburner custom fan curve >>How to use MSI Afterburner<<

If still bad, contact MSI about this:

Don't think that will work because from what I have read about the new cooler the fans work seperately from each other.

I see.

Well, it's about time now until MSI releases a BIOS that will fix that. But read the manual just to make sure how it's supposed to be.

I have the exact same problem with 2  MSI gtx 970,the fan will go on spining very fastly even after stoping any 3d application and doing strictly nothing on the computer.
It is as if instead of switching the fans off,it is switched to full speed.
MSI afterburner says that both fans don't spin but the fan of the lower card is spining very fastly. The card's temperature is below 60 C which is,according to MSI,the point where the fan stop spining.

My brother has the same thing with the 2nd fan suddenly spinnig very fast. It happens pretty randomly. When you put your finger on it and stop the 2nd fan for a moment then it will go to normal state again. If you don't do that you need to perform a full shutdown to reset it.

What brand and type motherboard are you guys using? My brother has the MSI ZH77A-G43 and he is currently using the 344.16 Beta drivers because the latest WHQL seems to give more problems than the Beta one.

Yes, true.

So far the 344.16 Beta drivers are running fine with my brother bacause he hasn't called me again so it must be ok. ;)

Strangely I'm not experiencing any problems yet with the 344.16 WHQL drivers, maybe because I have a different chipset than he has.

Will keep you guys up to date!

To everyone  who experiences GTX 970 Fan Issues:

Please provide your Serial Number (you can dismiss last 3 characters which are unique), and current vBIOS which you can make copy of in the following way:

1)Uninstall Nvidia drivers. Newest nvflash requires this
2)Download nvflash >>NVFlash from Guru3D<< and run it
3) Use appropriate syntax: nvflash --version  and post version name next together with S/N

Thanks!

It's easier to use GPU-Z to check the vBios version.

My brother's card.

s/n is: 602-V316-03SB1409027
vBios: http://1drv.ms/1rq6QO2

vBios: 84.04.1F.00.F1
This is not what I asked for. That's why I asked for nvflash.
Or at last: use GPU-Z, make copy of vBIOS (little icon next to vBIOS "version") and tell the name of .rom

the name of the .rom is irrelevant. If saving vbios to file we need the vbios itself to readout the version. Save to file, upload vbios to some filehoster and add link here.

I hope that you will find what is needed in this:

The fan of the lower card spins very fast but the fan of the other card completly stop spining (which is normal).
I posted only the picture for one card because it is totally identical for both.

You need a test build of GPU-Z to be able to save the bios of a gtx 970 or a gtx 980.

Download it here: http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/attachments/gpu-z-exe.59347/

Yeah it's because it's new series where GPU-Z people hasn't make it "final" and working fine.
This info (vBIOS) will be passed to appropriate person to check if something is wrong.
Thanks for bothering

More would be needed if anyone else has this issue.

Update.

I loaded safe settings in my motherboard bios (to see if it helps).
Now,when i leave a game (Metro 2033,Unigine etc...),the screen goes totally black and i can't do anything but restarting the computer.
I tried to load optimized settings too and it does the same thing.
The monitor tells me that there is no DVI signal when it happens.Pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del doesn't do anything.(My monitor is an Asus VG248QE 144Hz).
Tried once with the desktop extended to my TV which is plugged via hdmi and the issue didn't happen.(i will retry when i have time and tell if it prevents the issue to happen all the time or not)
I've had many graphic cards and never encounterd such issues.
Any help or news would be much appreciated.
Thank you.

PS:Since i loaded the defaul settings in my MB 's bios,i didn't notice the fan to be abnormaly spining anymore (didn't open the case to see if the fan stops spining or not) . The issue seems now to be the opposite-->the fans doesn't spin super fast but i have no more picture as if the card went into "sleeping" mod.

Well it's new release and as you noticed people are having issues with it.
Hope you can live until Monday as going to wait for reply from appropriate person about this.

With black screen: it sounds like insufficient PSU

Driver 344.11 WHQL also gives the same problem with the fan so it's probably not a driver related issue.

What brand and type motherboard are you guys using?

Nichrome,

I have a Altec 950w 80+ PSU.
It has been ok for vey long with sli gtx 580,sli gtx 770...
Since the issue happens a few second after i leave a game,i don't think that it is a PSU problem. It would have been if it happened while gaming.
When i play,i have no issue, everything works great.

Varg,my motherboard is a Gigabyte Z68X-UD4-B3 (rev.1.0)

Ok ,thx for the answers on the brand and type motherboard!

My brother, the one with the fan issue has a MSI ZH77A-G43 so would it be save to say that it is not chipset related?

Yes sadly it's GPU related.
But nothing we can do right now since it's weekend. Got to wait until Monday.

Hi, can i ask if you can tell to your brother to uninstall (removing custom config when asked) MSI afterburner and Riva tuner Statistics server from add/remove programs and reboot? and check again?

Triying to make some conclussions concerning crazy fans....

Thank god its not me just having this issue !!!

I thought I was going mad.

One fan (the one at the back of card near power connector) gets stuck at the maximum rpm its been at, untill a reboot.

nVidia Inspector, MSI Afterburner...nothing can reset it.

Tried drivers 344.11 and 344.16

Same on both.

@Nichrome: Do you think it's Bios related of hardware related? Faulty wiring on the card itself or so?

@Dorkirt: He doesn't have Afterburner installed.

All you guys are using vbios version NV316MH.125. Most likely that one is bugged but we'll see after Nichrome provided MSI with this info and have them check it.

I don't know because I couldn't check it with Nvflash because it's not working correctly with the card. It gives a notification that there is no Nvidia card installed when I check the vBios version.

Sorry, I meant my vBios version. Could you check mine which version number that one is having?

Here is the Vbios of my own card, that is for now, not showing any fan related problems:
