MSI GTX 980 Crashing my PC when playing games
« on: 18-April-15, 09:31:43 »

Hey all,

I bought a new PC recently and been installing my games and such on it. I've been having a major problem where my entire PC would just crash whilst I'm playing. No BSOD, no 'this has stopped working' errors or anything. It just freezes up and I have to hard reset the PC in order to reboot.

I've been looking for solutions online already for days, I've tried everything and it still hasn't helped at all. GTA V crashes now with no real signs of it going to happen.

I've ruled out cooling being the issue, as my GPU reads between 60 - 70C and I'm comfortable with it being able to handle that.

Spec:

750W FSP Quiet Power Supply - Silver 80 PLUS
MSI 990FXA-GD65 AMD FX ATX Motherboard
AMD FX-9590 Black Edition, 8 Core, 4.7GHz, 16MB Cache
32GB DDR3 2133Mhz Memory
4GB NVIDIA GTX 980 Graphics Card, 2048 Cores
2TB SATA III 6Gb/s, 7200rpm, 64MB Cache, 8ms Hard Drive

If there are any other specs that are needed, just ask and I'll provide.

I also just want to add that the crashing doesn't happen immediately after loading a game up. I can play on any game for about 30 minutes - 1 hour before it crashes. No real performance issues either. It can happily do 60 FPS+ constantly.

Hi

What are the CPU temps?
What if you put GPU fans at 100% and try to play then?
What RAM do you have, and settings for it?
Also what BIOS version your board has installed?

Try clearing CMOS using this >>Clear CMOS Guide<<
Also try with single RAM stick, set to 1333MHz frequency.

CPU temp is roughly around 50 - 60C, it has liquid cooling on it.

In terms of GPU fans, last time it crashed was on 95% (With help of the monitoring tool provided by MSI)

All I know about the RAM is that I have 32GB installed and I believe they are AMD Radeon R9 gaming series.
EDIT: I looked at my BIOS settings and the DRAM frequency was at 1866Mhz. Would that be affecting it? I set it back to 2133Mhz anyhow.

BIOS Version? Not a clue. Haven't checked it.
EDIT: BIOS version is E7640AMS V20.3

I did run a memory diagnostic and that didn't come up with anything.

What does trying with a single 8GB stick achieve? I've never really tried it out.

Trying with single RAM stick on low frequency can help narrow down where the issue is

Are you able to try different PSU? Or maybe different graphics card?
Also check that all the cables are properly seated (especially PSU->GPU cabling)
Try reinstalling  graphics drivers.
Try to run Valley Benchmark on Extreme HD preset while having Afterburner running in backgroup.
Did you try different modes with MSI Gaming App? Or which exactly card is it?

I don't have other PSUs/GPUs to try out unfortunately...

I checked the cabling yesterday and even reseated the GPU itself. Still crashed regardless.

I tried reinstalling the drivers before the GTA V driver came out and that didn't resolve the issue either.

I did the Valley benchmark, not on extreme settings though. Will give it a try.

I don't actually have the gaming app, unless you mean Kombustor/Afterburner. It's an MSI GTX 980. That's all I really know about the card.

EDIT: http://gyazo.com/034fb7acb7ada7b357942046a25e80f7 - Here's the benchmark results

So it passed the benchmark I see.

Before you start the benchmark, it sits on the benchmarking screen (showing all the mountains etc) right? Don't press the button to start a benchmark (F11?) but just let it go as it is and keep GPU under load and see if it crashes after about 1h.

Reference card?

And what games have you tried so far?
Can you tell us S/N of the card? Maybe there's some vBIOS update.

So far I've tried Diablo 3, Heroes of the Storm, Evolve, CS:GO and GTA V. All have crashed at some point or another.

Will edit in the S/N of the card when I find it.

EDIT:
S/N: 602-V317-140B1501000712

Has GTX 980 4GD5 OCV1 above that by the way.

And if you play on low settings (except resolution) does it also crash?
Did you try to time roughly when it crashes?  You said 30-60 mins, but does it apply to all games you tried so far?

That was the next thing I was going to try out. I'll probably try medium settings on GTA V first and then go from there.

Pretty much for all games, they all crashed around 30-60 minutes.

Ok, so...

Played GTA V on medium settings (or normal as it says in game) and no crashes. Must have played a good 2 - 3 hours solid. Although something else happened that worried me.

With no games running whatsoever, only Chrome with a couple of tabs open, my PC crashed again! Same symptom as when I play a game. One of my friends asked me to check the PhysX setting and when I went to open the NCP, crashed. I don't even know anymore \o/

place 1 memory stick only in 1st DIMM near to CPU socket

do a >>Clear CMOS Guide<< with power cord removed

then retest and see if still will crash or not

Other things to try.

What shows up in Event Viewer after crash?

Use DDU to help clean up drivers then reinstall drivers.
http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-driver-uninstaller-download.html
This help me a few months ago, fixed my problem.

Use Driver Store Explorer to clean up any Nvidia or unused drivers.
https://driverstoreexplorer.codeplex.com/
.NET Framework 3.5 SP1 required.

Could be faulty ram on the video card.

OK I cleared cmos but it takes me to click bios 2 and I don't know where to go from there. Can't find the optimized settings option.

Can't really do anything until then...

Might be bad card. Are you able to test the card in different PC? Friend or local IT services might help.

Sorry, how does that equate to a bad card? I followed the clear cmos guide but I get taken into click bios 2 when I press F1 to setup. I just don't know where to go from there. Has nothing to do with the card.

EDIT: Never mind, found the optimized settings location.

Bit of a breakthrough here.

So I tried playing GTA V with one 8GB RAM card on 1333MHz frequency (In the slot closest to the CPU) and I played for about 2 - 3 hours on high settings. No crashes. Leads me to believe one of the RAM cards is faulty, one of the slots is faulty or perhaps a card wasn't seated correctly.

Check it out if it is RAM or just card not properly seated.
Try working module in each of the RAM slots and test with Intel Burn Test on Maximum. Then do the same for other stick.
